Exhaustion - Future Eaters lp (Aarght Records AUSTRALIA)

BACK IN! Re-press. Album cover art is now white on black (opposite of image shown) !"...Exhaustion, the Melbourne trio of vocalist/guitarist Duncan Blachford (Snawklor, Actual Holes, Cross Brothers), bassist Jensen Tjhung (Deaf Wish, Lower Plenty) and drummer Per Bystrom (Ooga Boogas, Leather Towel).

The band follows Blachford’s repeated forays into free-form noise in recent years, after a stint drumming for Witch Hats. Says the presser: “Naturally the impulse to form a new band arose and he recruited Jensen Tjhung on bass, himself no stranger to blackouts in a hate prism of his own making. With the recruitment of Swedish rhythm machine Per Bystrom, the psychic valves opened – spontaneous music appeared out of air thick with desperation, paranoia and trudging dread.”

The resulting album is Future Eaters, recorded mostly by Tjhung within months of the trio’s first gig. It includes ‘Moon Out Tonight’ – an unlikely extending of The Capris’ 1959 doo wop gem  as well as an electronics outro by ZOND’s Justin Fuller on the 10-minute, A-side-capping ‘No Place for a Holiday’. Equally cynical and cyclical, the album churns up a riot of menace without abandoning “proper” vocals, lyrics and, well, songs. (There are even lyrics printed on the sleeve.) At some moments, like the start of ‘Old Mickey’, open space and a slowed pace sneaks out from amid all that convulsive noise.

Future Eaters comes out this Friday (Feb 8) through Aarght!/Fuse. It’s limited to 250 copies on 12" vinyl with download card. " -  Mess + Noise.
