I don't even know what to say about you bad lil fuckers.
I eat one of you and it's like I just ate an entire salad.
I don't even need to put butter on you.
Just keep on doing what yr doing.
God, I love your yellow guts
peace.

Sweet sprouts.
I know it hasn't hasn't been long since I last wrote but
I just can't leave you alone.
Sometimes, at night I try to eat you whole leaving only a nub
on my plate.
But when I'm feeling down I peel you layer for layer let you lie on my tongue.

It's been a windy road and some seemed resigned to just pass you by.
Don't sweat those who write you off as mini lettuce.
You're bigger than that.

I absorb your vitamins.
You make my shit float.

That's fuckin' sexy.

Sixteene turned me on to the brussels, but we both need butter and salt.
Posted: Apr 5, 2006 7:24 pm

completely understandable.
I however like to bare-back my brussel sprouts.

I live near Brussels and I've always hated'em...

...might change my mind now.

I am laughing to myself. Out loud in my office. Cut this shit out, Matthew!

I only like brussel sprouts with butter. But they scourge up bad childhood memories! My dad cold slapped me in the face for throwing a temper tantrum about not eating them, then chewing one up, gagging on it and spitting it into my chocolate milk!!!!!

chewing one up, gagging on it and spitting it into my chocolate milk!!!!!

HAHAHAHAHAAHAH!!!!!!!!

Seriously good, simple recipe:

Sprouts... cut a "+" shape on the ass-end (the bottom, the hard part- makes cooking 'em go WAY faster)
Throw in cast iron skillet
Buncha olive oil (and a little butter, if you want)
Cook slowly for a while
Add stone-ground mustard- not a lot, but not too little, either... enough so that some mustard-olive oil mixture gets on every sprout
Sprinkle with sea salt to taste.

That's it, and it's the JAM! MMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMM!!!!!!!

like mathew, i like em boiled and bare. but some people just dont feel that. i've passed them off on naysayers by shaking them up in olive oil and roasting them in the oven for an hour. turn and salt once or twice. yum! plus, when they are all on the stalk they look like a medieval weapon or gay sex prop.

We're still getting married, aren't we Joe? Brussel's sprouts too?! Really, I'm more in love every day. This sounds sooo good!

But they scourge up bad childhood memories!

Brussels Sprouts seem to have ruined childhoods in all parts of the world : my father forced me to eat them (and I always got a royal portion) and now the thought of eating BS alone, is so goddamn cruel...

I got a bag of frozen brussels sprouts. I need to cook them for an emergency dinner tonight. Suggestions?

Just seeing the ressurrection of this thread caused a gag reflex.

mmmm, sprouts du bruselle.

Alisa, I fear for anyone who buys the frozen joints...Fresh Brussels are the only way to fly...it's the frozen type that made me too, gag as a child. But the fresh ones...oh the fresh ones~

Yeah, I just happen to have a bag of frozen in the freezer and unexpectedly have to make dinner tonight. Too lazy to go to the store for veggies...

Thanks, Joe. That was what I was going to do with them, but wondered if they needed to be fresh for them to be good that way.

Brussel Sprout Jam?
Like I'd pay attention to your food suggestions? You liver hater.

I never used frozen ones before... you're on your own!

No, Alisa, I was perplexed by Joe's post.
I may hate liver, but I love freedom.

1. the jam

A British three peice mod revival band from the 70's and 80's.

example: The Jam's most famous song is probably "A Town Called Malice".

2. the jam

Used to describe something that was really fun or cool.

'That was the jam' is sort of the same thing as 'that was a blast' or 'that was a ball.'

example: It's pretty much the Jam. That show was the Jam. Etc.

I was jus' tryin' to use the hip lingo that's so popular with the kids these days.

Listen here, culinary boy! You better make me some brussell sprout jam!
Posted: Apr 19, 2006 9:52 pm

I've eaten Velvetta cheese/fudge! I ain't skeert!*

*ain't skeert does not include broccoli and chicken liver. I am deathly afraid of communism.

Kick out the jams??
Oh wait, that's something else.
Posted: Apr 19, 2006 9:53 pm

Broccoli is utopian, stupit!

Okay, update on the frozen sprouts...
Joe, I could not use your recipe because I asked Nancy about the mustard and she said, "Oh no, I can't eat mustard. I was raised to think mustard would kill you." What??? Anyway...

Thawed them in the package just sitting out and in a bowl of cold water. Drained them. Put a bunch of olive oil and some butter in a skillet. No need to X the bottoms, as they were fairly soft. Cooked them slow, added a bit of balsamic vinegar and salt and pepper toward the end (didn't have sea salt).

Even starting frozen they were really good. Just like candy!

Sounds like heaven!
Posted: Apr 20, 2006 10:05 pm

Sweet balls of goodness!

Next time I'll make em your way. Perhaps even invest in some sea salt!
So, really, Joe. Have you every heard that mustard can KILL you? I mean, she literally meant she was told she would die if she ate mustard when she was a kid.
Posted: Apr 20, 2006 10:21 pm

No. That's stupid- mustard is GOOD! I mean, if it could kill you, the corpses of thousands of baseball fans would rotting in the street.
Posted: Apr 21, 2006 12:57 am

Well, yeah! I've never heard that particular food fallacy!
