Get Wasted On Oscar Best Picture Nominees
USA Today’s Oscar blog The O-Factor paid a visit to the Beverly Hills Hotel’s Polo Lounge, where the stars escape for old school showbiz luxury wrapped up in a tidy, banana-leaf wallpaper package. In honor of the quickly approaching Academy Awards ceremony, “food and beverage manager Connie Richey” has worked up some creative alchemy and invented five original cocktails based on each Best Picture nominee:
Most innocuous is The Nightcap for Good Night, and Good Luck, the ode to TV newsman Edward R. Murrow (a warmed blend of Kahlua, milk, nutmeg and powdered sugar). Then there is the tongue-in-cheeky Jolly Rancher, the potable in honor of the gay Western romance Brokeback Mountain (Ketel One vodka, Midori and cranberry juice). Darned clever is In Cold Bloody Martini for Capote (a bloody mary with Absolut Citron and Absolut Peppar). Taking the easy way out, though, is The Olympian (dark rum, cherry brandy and lime juice) for the vengeance drama Munich. One could question The Carjacker (a highly potent variation on the Long Island with vodka, gin, rum, tequila, triple sec, sour mix and fresh orange juice) as making light of the racial conflicts that drive Crash. But one intoxicating sip will likely wash away any concerns.
We’re not sold on The Olympian–somehow, a sanguine libation named after Munich’s innocent assassination victims just doesn’t scream, “Let’s party with Oscar!” We would have gone with the more inspirational Jew’s Revenge, a tasty combination of Manishewitz, prune juice and Goldschlager.
