Goner Message Board / Food & Drink / ever eat out of the trash?
Posted: Jan 26, 2006 3:43 am

I left a bar recently and saw take out containers sitting by the bike rack. The fries were still warm. My friend and I hung out by the dumpsters with the rats and had a feast. There was shrimp too. I ate a little, but I didn't feel right about it.

I used to live a block from this killer donut shop in Madison WI and sometimes, usually while stoned, we would visit their dumpster after they closed. On most occasions we'd score a box filled with various delicious items baked that day. That was also the summer we found a huge bag of McRib buns in the dumpster behind McDonalds... not even stale. What followed was a harrowing week of eating nothing but McRib buns. Not recommended.

I'll bet Miss Linda has had a dumpster dive or two @ Burger King.....

And Martel, if I had any doubts about you before, this certainly seals it.

in my punk rock days, we would steal bakery deliveries from restaurants before they opened... the bakery trucks would leave bags of freshly baked good in front of the doors....this was like about 5 AM each day

its like trash in reverse

Sarah finds lots of good stuff in the trash.

Lots of people scavenge the bagel shops and bakeries around here. One guy told me he lived on bagels for months at a time, and then told me a strange story about waking up to Eric Bachman eating dumpster bagels on his back porch.

See, I can totally understand scavenging baked goods, but I would have to be rock fucking bottom to accept scavenged baked goods from a middleman. That's too far from the point or origin for me.

A gas station I once worked at threw away sandwiches 2 days before they expired. Milk, O.J., and other beverages were discarded 5 days before expiring. Donuts were thrown out the day of expiration. Everything was still wrapped up and in seperate bags from the other trash. If I was homeless or piss broke, I'd have a field day!

When I was in college, we would go by the McDonalds when it closed and grab the "warm bag". It would be all the discarded good food in one bag, wrapped up tight. A little later I worked at a KFC and we took home all the chicken that we were supposed to throw away at the end of the night. We used to feed half of Carbondale Illinois.

I was out drinking one night and my roommates left me at a bar. It was a good 6-7 miles to my apartment. I didn't have money for a cab, so I started walking. I was freezing cold and starving by the half way point, which happened to be near a Shakey's pizza. A pizza box sat atop the filth and garbage in the dumpster behind the place, and, sure enough, there was an untouched Hawaiian pie inside. I felt like a degenerate eating it, but it tasted so fuckin' good. When I arrived home, I left a floater in my roommate's toilet.

somehow my mom and/or aunt scored a box full of about to expire potato chips. i'm pretty sure they were out "hawking" when they found the chips

Hawking is the family term for dumpster diving/scouting out trash (furniture) at the curb the night before garbage pickup

Where do all those bookstore magazines end up at the end of the month? Anyone know? Shit, I'd love to get my hands on the Playboy special mags and Penthouse Forums if they just toss 'em out.

I live in the 'burbs and a few years ago there was a bum coming around for 2-3 weeks making really loud noises while going through our trash. I looked out the window and saw the guy. If you're gonna do that shit, don't wake the neighborhood is all I'm saying.

We hit up the Fortune Cookie factory one night in Mpls and got a large garbage bag full of wrapped and sealed fortune cookies. My friends minivan had fortunes and crushed cookies on the floor for over a year.

My ex-wife worked at a card store/newsstand. Whenever the magazines "expired", they would tear off the front covers and send them back to the distributor. I have no idea what happened to them after that, though.

when I was a teenage chambermaid, stumbling into work still drunk at 7 am, I'd eat people's leftovers out of their mini-fridges to sober up.

and it's hardly trash, but people would regularly leave behind half-bottles of wine and liquor and single beers/coolers when they'd check out. From the ages of 16 to 18, I was alway SET (usually with a mix of assorted Euro beer and flat half-empty 2L bottles of Rockaberry cooler); good thing mum never looked inside the beanbag chair.

I haven't, but I was at the grocery store last week and they had these big, yummy looking donuts on top of a bin of trash. They were in their own separate box. I was tempted but I did not succumb. I thought of George Costanza!

I did that too when I worked for the Colonel (1976) and lived in the dorms. I brought home buckets of chicken... its good stoner food and my fellow dormies enjoyed it for the big ol' two weeks I worked at KFC

einstein throws out a lot of bagels, and i frequent that when ever i'm hungry. there's this other place called rudy's pizza that throws out pizza everynight when they close. there are always four or five people waiting for it. then they go across the street and get drunk in a dumpster nook with a roof. there are always lawn chairs and pizza boxes and beer bottles in there.

oh shit! and hastings throws out all their old porn and magazines and cut outs of new hit movies. it's sweeeeet.
