Hope Presbyterian Church is offering a $250/mth stipend to hurricane victims in Memphis on a first come/first served basis. You have to fill out some minor paperwork. here's the info I got from April:

There is a group of local business people raising money for a fund called
the "Memphis Relief Fund - Katrina". The purpose of the fund will be to
provide financial assistance to Katrina refugee's that are being housed
by churches, church members, friends of members. "MRF-K" will
provide up to $250.00 per person per month for the next three months.
If you are currently housing one of these families in need, we'd like to
invite you to bring your guests to the church (Hope) to complete the
application and receive the first month's stipend. All members of the
family must be present at the time of application to receive any funding.
The applications will be taken from 5:00 to 7:00PM, Monday the 5th
and Tuesday the 6th of September.

The process will require Social Security numbers, Driver's license ID,
we'll take a picture of you and your family, and you have to be staying in
a Local home or shelter …. Any questions can be sent to

I posted this a few days ago, but someone should really email me if they want to get a job at Memphis Heritage. My aunt is hiring for a 4 day a week job as her asst there.
Posted: Sep 6, 2005 6:32 pm
Marc said this was posted elsewhere, but i couldn't find it.

TWO immediate tiling jobs available for EVENINGS only (not graveyard, but
probably after 5pm-type deal). Pay will be based on experience, but
experience is NOT necessary. Labor is needed for approximately two weeks.
Please contact Marc at 901-581-2162 (cell).

He also might have daytime warehouse jobs for the next couple of weeks. Good guy to get in touch with.
Posted: Sep 6, 2005 6:48 pm | Edited by: Uptight White
Here tis' again.

Two tiling jobs are still available, with a possible long distance job in South Carolina for contract work that will pay well. No tools or experience needed, just a good work ethic and no flaking. If some tiling supplies come in today, one or two of you could be working this afternoon.

I also may have some temp packing, cleanup, and mechanical disassembly work at my South Memphis (Winchester & Cherry) warehouse this week thru next. I'll post when I know more.

I can vouch for Hope Presbyterian. They are doing alot and getting donations straight to people without the Red Cross admin costs. I've been donating cash and clothes there, so if you want some paramilitary clothes and noise band t-shirts, that's the place to be. Go there and get yourselves fed, clothed, and flush. They also need volunteers.

this from GBShrewsbury:

anybody a carpenter (or even close)? black snake moan needs some right now.

pays good and you only need your basic tools.

or even PAs, grips, electricians, painters, etc. for that matter. if anyone
remotely has experience i'm sure they'd have a good shot, all considering.

the number for black snake moan is 578-3550.

yep I can help with getting people hired on BSM too -- Jason, Blythe, Peg, Tim, Lo, Dan, Chris -- you in???
Posted: Sep 6, 2005 8:42 pm
Motorhoney said it already, but though I don't have a specific position to mention offhand, Vegas has more jobs that can be easily acquired or are temporary than any place on earth at the moment. I just heard on NPR that our local mob... I mean employment services bureau has sent out nationwide want ads (aimed at Kat victims) 'cause people can't fill jobs here fast enough. Come out and make some money, just try not to get stuck here when NOLA's up and running again.
Posted: Sep 6, 2005 8:46 pm
This is red eye's way of saying, "please come here and hang out with me."
Posted: Sep 6, 2005 8:54 pm
I'd just e-mail you Joe, if that were the case.
I need no popularity and am just trying humbly to help out.
Why don't you put some NOLAnders up in that big queens apartment you keep braggin' about?
Posted: Sep 6, 2005 8:56 pm
Quit bein' such a stick in the mud, jeez.

We might be havin' a couple of the homless stay at the end of the month. It seems most haven't made it this far yet.
Posted: Sep 6, 2005 8:56 pm
Oh yeah... you wouldn't want broke, hungry people coming up there 'cause finding a job or a cheap apartment in New York is com-fucking-pletely impossible.
Vegas really is a good place to hold up for a while.
Posted: Sep 6, 2005 8:58 pm
Sorry Joe. I just ate a hippie sandwich for lunch and it's made me all bleeding hearted and shit.
Posted: Sep 6, 2005 9:24 pm
I can put in a word to the DoubleDoor/Metro folks if anyone's moving to Chicago.
Posted: Sep 6, 2005 9:45 pm

SOMEONE should take the brewer job. I agree, Ipswich is awesome. If I could pick a place to buy a home in MA it would be in the North Shore area.
Posted: Sep 12, 2005 4:29 am
i'll take the brewer job if I can work as a night cook at the agawam diner.
Posted: Sep 12, 2005 4:57 am

Yes, I know it sounds glamorous...but remember this is a PRODUCTION brewery with lots of shit work, free beer, and good times, too. Free practice space (conveniently next to my drum kit) is also part of the deal if said applicant is a musician.

Seriously, we are looking for someone with experience.

I used to have my own beer brewing kit that I bought from Mantia's Italian Resturant. I made some a few successful Belgin Ales , but my favorite was a Polish Porter with a that I named YEAST INFECTION.

Posted: Sep 13, 2005 5:55 pm

In times like this, you should always check for credibility. Free gas message is bogus, however, food stamps are being provided upon registration with the TDH.

I've been at the Convention Center [Austin] every day since last Saturday, as of late we (my dept-City of Austin Housing) are placing people in apts/homes. SO if any of you displaced evacuees don't already know, the Red Cross (after registration w/ FEMA) is issuing 'Landlord Verification' forms that allows for your first month's rent and apparently FEMA is supposed to kick in for either 6 months-1 year (although we can’t seem to get complete verification of this, everyone is operating on this notion).

Food stamp cards are being issued.
The notorious debit cards are being issued (I believe in the form of a check now - not sure).
In Austin, Cap Metro buses are issuing long-term bus passes.
You are being issued Goodwill vouchers for food/clothing.
Other organizations are putting together ‘apt packages’ (bed, table, kitchen, bath stuffs).
CVS is on site to take care of any meds you require.

Okie-dokie, I’m thinking of all you NOLA Goners in Memphis right now! Memphians, make sure everyone who is not on-line know these services are available to them, please? Please take them down to the local Red Cross evacuee shelters and get them registered for everything!!

someone mentioned it earlier, but i work at mci in memphis and what you would be doing there is deaf relay (NOT SELLING ANYTHING OR GETTING PEOPLE TO CHANGE THEIR LONG DISTANCE PROVIDER THANK CHRIST). it's 10 dollars an hour, not 100. heh. (although i wish it was 100. i'd never leave.) you get benefits after 90 days and it's a pretty laid back work environment and they don't give a flying shit what you look like or wear for the most part. they're hiring a BUNCH of folks and they have hours available from 6am to midnight. the requirements are that you have to type 60 words per minute and you have to take a relatively easy spelling/grammar test too. but it's not bad.

Goner social workers- Please call me if you have a degree in human services and have an interest in working with individuals (children and adults) with MR/ DD. I will be one of your interviewers, so you'll have a leg-up if your a Goner! Call me ASAP at my office in Memphis: 901-327-1040, ext 261, to set up an interview. Don't bug me if you're not serious!
