Yeah, this is the most beautiful song ever:

Hard to say I'm sorry

Everybody needs a little time away
I heard her say, from each other
Even lovers need a holiday
Far away from each other

Hold me now
It's hard for me to say I'm sorry
I just want you to stay

After all that we've been through
I will make it up to you
I promise to
And after all that's been said and done
You're just a part of me I can't let go

Couldn't stand to be kept away
Just for the day, from your body
Wouldn't want to be swept away
Far away from the one that I love

Hold me now
It's hard for me to say I'm sorry
I just want you to know
Hold me now
I really want to tell you I'm sorry
I could never let you go

After all that we've been through
I will make it up to you
I promise to
And after all that's been said and done
You're just a part of me I can't let go
And after all that we've been through
I will make it up to you
I promise to

Reigning Sound- If You Can't Give Me Everything

I totally agree - not that I don't agree with most of you, I just can't narrow it down. But, this song, especially live, is a perfect song.
Posted: Aug 26, 2005 3:35 am

I'd have a hard time nailing down just one Big Star or Springsteen song actually.

What about "Whiskey Bottle" by the Golden Boys?

Spacemen 3 "Honey," "Let Me Down Gently" and many others. Jessamine "Ordinary Sleep." "Love Is All Around." Suicide's "Cheree." Crystallized Movements "Spinning Around," and a buncha' others. Some Galaxy 500, though that can cause a toothache.

9 Sweet Nothing- Velvet Underground
10 I can hardly wait- PJ Harvey

There are a few I am thinking of that I don't know the titles to... One is a Lou Reed and the refrain goes "Love has gone away/and there's nothing left to say/ but oh how I need you baby" -it's really sad. (I think it also has a cello in the instrumentation-- I think it's on Berlin) Also one Nico song with a haunting cello accompanying her equally haunting voice. For some reason when you say "beautiful" I am equating it with "sad"

And my friend Holly's band (and I know for a fact that she's a friend of some of yours, too), the Headliners, have this amazing song that is probably the most heartbreaking thing I've ever heard: www.myspace.com/theeheadliners. It's the one called "Wicked Dawn". If you wanna start sobbing, give it a listen

and uh, is there anyone else here who appreciates the Rock*A*Teens as much as I do?

I love the first couple Rock*a*Teens albums. Also Jonathan Fire*Eater's (must be them asterisks) first album and 'Tremble Under Boom Lights.' The breakdown on "Give Me Daughters" still sends shivers up my spine, and "Christmastime, Halloween" on the first album. The first RockaTeens is an underappreciated classic in my opinion.

Fuckin Billy Childish'll get you everytime though. Listening to him covering Leadbelly is a rare pleasure of a true understanding between artist spanning generations. What the fuck am I talking about? I'm not even drunk.

Useless Eater cited Pink Turns to Blue, which is a great song, but is that song not about an OD and watching a girl die, " I don't know what to do now that pink has turned to blue"? Gritty and great, yes, beautiful I'm not so sure, that is why I skipped this one on my list though it did come to mind for a second.
Posted: Sep 13, 2005 2:19 am

Too true about junkie business. Pink turns to brown if Norton wrote it about the other 2, but he can't fucking write a tune like that. Fucking concept albums, with flying v guitar, singing drummers. The song sounds beautiful to me regardless of the lyrical content. "Whatever" would be the second choice, but that's fucking depressing too. Can't analyze Zen Arcade too much make me feel like a shit ass teenager again, who didn't do drugs, what was wrong with me.

And my list is suspect, got a song from "Yesterday Started Tomorrow" on there!

The cover of "Loretta" on there is real good too, though not the most beautiful song or whatever. That lady sure can sing.

I just saw the New Pornographers on some television show a couple days ago, and people in my town go on and on about them and this Neko Case chick cause there's some sort of connection/local pride thing; and I didn't understand the interest at all...pretty bland if you ask me (this is of course based off hearing one song, so you know it's correct)

1. Shangri-las- "Past, Present, Future"
Why this isn't on that girl group box is a complete mystery to me. Nothing else in the genre can touch it.
2. Donald and the delighters- "elephant walk"
When your heart speaks...you forget everything.
3. Bobbie Gentry- "Jessye Lizabeth"
If this doesn't make you cry you don't have a heart.
4. Byrds- "My Love Don't Care About Time"
The end-all, be-all folk rock masterpiece.
5. Nolan Strong & the Diablos- "I want to know"
"I wonder do I come into yo' mind...jus' every now and then"
6. The Dominoes- "Do something for me"
Any girl would do what ever the hell you want if you could ask like Clyde.
7. Flamingos- "time was"/"where or when"
Actually any track off the"flamingo serenade" LP paired with the proper narcotics will seem like the most beautiful song you ever heard.
8. Midnighters- "moonrise"
Not really known for their ballads but this one gives goosebumps.
9. 5 Royales- "someone made you for me"
L. Pauling fuses gospel and secular into the most hauntingly romantic explanation of why God made a man and a woman.
10. Beach Boys- "you still beleive in me"
Perfect.

This will all change tomorrow.

Agreed but I will always associate this song with the acting genius of Dan Rose. Everytime I hear it I can see him in my mind's eye.
