Loggins & Messina
Posted: May 11, 2005 5:11 pm | Edited by: messageboardbandit

Now Jim Messina had an enormous asshole. A little known fact here: he used to keep the amps up there on tour so the band had more room on the bus.
Posted: May 11, 2005 5:30 pm

There's that Smell & Quim cd, "the Diameter of Elvis' Colon", which is a reference to the rumor that the King's colon was roughly 5 1/2" at the time of his death (approximately the circumference of a compact disc). Take that Messina.

hey, jim messina & the jesters stuff is GOOD!
Posted: May 11, 2005 5:50 pm

i mean, that early stuff, when his asshole wasn't nearly as big. STILL GOOD!

Let's get back to the REAL subject matter. Andy is an asshole. He bit up my little brother and threw his Snake Eyes GI Joe figure down a well.

Two words:

The Kills.

Even if the Kills werent assholes, they' still be shit

DC Snipers might be better if they WERE assholes, but they're really just a bunch of pussycats.
Posted: May 11, 2005 6:10 pm

Smell & Quim! That guy's funny, he has an hitler moustache and drives a fork truck. I got thrown out of a pub once with him for smoking indian cigarettes the landlord thought were marrawanna

I hated the White Stripes two of the times I'd seen them based on how they behaved towards the sound guy. Same with the Make-Up. If you don't want the vocal mic to feed back, don't put your mouth around it. And don't threaten the sound guy, fucking pussies...

this is something I've never understood

I like bands because of the music they create and don't care at all about what their personalities are

I might not want to hang out with them but I'd still listen to the records and tell other people they were great
Posted: May 11, 2005 10:00 pm

yeah, what he said. I think asshole personalities often lead to great music, actually.
Posted: May 11, 2005 10:09 pm

I'll agree with Mark and not agree with Chris's statement but instead will agree to disagree. I'm hungry for tacos.
Posted: May 11, 2005 10:20 pm

i think it is totally dependent on talent not asshole qualities. goodness knows I have seen some asses on stage garggling out some total crap, but i'll be hard pressed not to go see good bands because someone acts out. When I first saw Final Solutions I thought Zac was a total butt head. Boy, that made me the judgemental ass, huh.

Headache City

which member?
Posted: May 11, 2005 10:24 pm

someone is always telling me about how a lot of northwest bands (killawatts were specifically mentioned) are all assholes. the farthest north i ever been is chicago, and ive never met anyone, but the killawatts do look like theyd beat me up for my lunch money.
Posted: May 11, 2005 10:27 pm

Well, we played w/Halfacre Gunroom the other day, and the bass player, Chris, was whinnin' about the fact that we didn't start right at 10:30 like "he told us to in his e-mail". I thought it was kinda funny, but he was being a dick to our bass player, which ain't cool. When they played, I had already decided they suck b/c of him. It's really not true, but one member's attitude pretty much ruined it for me. And we definitely won't play w/them again. So, yeah, personalities do matter to some extent. At least when you try to play with other bands or support them locally.
Posted: May 11, 2005 10:30 pm | Edited by: Mark Beef

also what constitutes an asshole?

is it someone who was on the road and wasn't in a good mood so they maybe didn't interact well with you at the show you saw em on..........or is it a band that won't give you a cd....or is it a band which did one of these things to a "friend" of yours who then posted about it on the intraweb or told everyone in your town so it must be true?

sorry Mr Slaughter sometimes people are mean....grouphug?
Posted: May 11, 2005 10:34 pm

This band was not on the road and dude is notorious for being a dick.

Basically, it would be left to one's interpretation of what asshole means.
Not getting free shit is not a good reason in my book.
Posted: May 11, 2005 10:38 pm

well then choose not to deal with him as should other bands who tire of his behavior and soon there won't be any bands playing with them and maybe he'll mellow out

who here wants to get MELLLLLLOW?

I SAID who here wants to get MELLLLOOOOW?!?!?!

sorry I love the Nuge
Posted: May 11, 2005 10:39 pm

how are the Killawatts a Northwest band?
Posted: May 11, 2005 10:42 pm

they are northwest of everyone living in Cuba
Posted: May 11, 2005 10:49 pm

I just saw the grouphug comment, Beef. You're an asshole and I won't play w/you either. WAAAAAAHHHH!!!!

I'm just sayin' that it's a shame that some bands are pretty cool guys/gals but one prick can ruin it for me. If that's being a big baby, then I'm a baby. When we play, we wanna have good time and don't wanna deal w/a dickhead who is crying about the fact that it's 10:45 and he said start at 10:30. Especially when they get on stage and play the same amount of songs we did and it took them an hour and a half longer to do it. But somehow it's our fault that they can't leave by 1 . That's all.
Posted: May 11, 2005 10:49 pm

yeah I'd look out for the Killawatts. They're crazy man.
Posted: May 11, 2005 10:51 pm

I understand Mr Slaughter and agree with you (even if I think Slaughter is a terrible band) and my grouphug comment was merely a joke

but you're right, I am an asshole
Posted: May 11, 2005 10:52 pm

A lot of great, visionary musicians are total control freaks and thus complete assholes. I guess there are lots of assholes who are just mediocre musicians, but who cares about that. A lot of the legendary rock 'n rollers are also notorious assholes. and if they weren't assholes, if they were forced to take a bunch of valium and chill or something it would probably totally diminish the quality of their art as well. I'm just sayin.
Posted: May 11, 2005 10:53 pm | Edited by: vegetable_man

for real - sometimes i gotta face the cover of their record away from me so i dont have nightmares.

i guess theyre not really northwest, maybe just north. i know my geography i think. i did cheat on my fourth grade "states and capitals" test though...i dont even have a clue im really a fuck head
Posted: May 11, 2005 10:54 pm

true, true

and sometimes they ain't so hot as an artist but they make a great Fuhrer
Posted: May 11, 2005 10:56 pm

Also, in the case of bands like FEAR, the asshole attitude is everything, without it, the band is poo poo.

I don't know

me and some friends had a GG Allin semi tribute band and we changed all the lyrics to be about nice things you'd sing to your grandmother, like "Drink, Fight and Fuck" was converted to "Drink Tea and Talk" and we were hella bitchin yo

all our moms said so

Dude, you are totally wrong. They were very talented. Can I get a witness?
Posted: May 12, 2005 6:33 am

agreed, the original four dudes in fear were a good batch of musicians. I'm pretty sure that they were a couple years older than most of the darby crash wannabes in the LA scene, and that might have been a good reason why they sound like such dicks. dunno, drunk....
Posted: May 12, 2005 7:15 am

I agree with the two comments above me, FEAR's onstage tough guy asshole grit would have meant nothing if they did not have a tight sound to back it up. They play like a machine in every video I have seen of them, and were also still good when I saw a reformed FEAR show a few years ago (especially on the old Slash-era shit).

Every band has to have at least one domineering, asshole member to keep the whole operation going. Or two. Then you've got the laid back member, or the party animal, or the girl. The people that are just doing it for fun. Those are the people you want to go up to and talk to after the show, but the thing is, 9 out of 10 times, if you stipped away the main asshole guy, and left the cool people to their own devices, they probably couldn't keep the band afloat, or even bother setting shows up and playing.

So god bless them assholes, I guess.
Posted: May 12, 2005 10:34 am

Scott from Fear played with Frank Zappa for a while. I think that means that he must've been pretty good.

Maybe you guys have a point. But I still wanna punch some folks in the face from time to time. Now I'M THE ASSHOLE!!! HA! HA! HA!
Posted: May 12, 2005 2:40 pm

In addition to being older than most of their scene contemporaries, I was under the impression Fear were pretty self-aware to a somewhat remarkable degree in relation to all the other bands around them. which is a large part of why their shtick was so entertaining.

I wouldn't be able to enjoy a helluva lot of records and shows if I based on it which bands were composed of assholes, jerks, pederasts and otherwise unredeemable junkies.

Well, quoting your own emails at rock shows is pretty lame. ...Unless you pull it up on your Blackberry.

When we were in NYC last weekend, my boss was quoting "New York's Alright," I said that Fear was still around and he asked me if that Vietnamese guy (Ving) was still in the band.

Bands I'd like more if it wasnt for the front man:

The Who
Van Halen
Led Lepplin

... and of course The Range minus Bruce Hornsby. Man, that guy ruins their sound. Did you know he's like, 7 feet fucking tall? He was offered a college scholarship to play basket ball but gave it up for a music ride. What a fuckk-wadd.

boo hoo. i enjoy this board because of the adults that frequent it. for those adults i am posting what it was i said to you so they may remain unbiased and possibly get a laugh out of this.

"hey man, when you asked to be on the show you said you were cool with playing at 10 or 10:30 and its after 11, this isnt gonna be a huge show and none of us really wanna be here till 3 am. bryan asked you once to start already do you think you could get going? thanks man."

then you proceded to play for well over an hour. and when you were done proceded to socalise with the 6 people you drew to the show (all of whom refused to pay the cover claiming "with the band" and one memorable "im six string jets band photographer" while your drummer broke down his gear onstage for 20 minutes.

see now... im sure alot of guys like you in bands like yours would call me an asshole for asking you to play on time. but i bet youre out numbered on this board by musicians that would call you an unprofessional for behaving as such at a show. If you want a party down hootin hollerin hellbilly hodown that is going to smash the down the evil tyranny of cover charges, set times and quick backline changes, don't ask to play with halfacre gunroom. this is our life and now its our living. we take it very seriously.

we dont expect you to understand. thats probably why we're a full time touring band and well... you just talk shit on the internet.

Wow, you really are a reatard. You must be the only one who remembers it that way. I was at the point of realizing that the incident wasn't that big a deal and maybe I was being a crybaby, but now I don' t.
for the record:
you asked us to play at 10:30, you came in crying at 10:45. There was hardly anyone there so we wanted to wait just a little longer. Didn't realize you had a curfew.

we played for maybe half an hour tops. 12 songs, 2 minutes a piece, plus a 5 minutes total between songs. most people thought our set was way too short, but we didn't want you to cry anymore, so we cut it short.

it took me 10 minutes to break down the drums,(i'm the drummer) and you guys were half-way set up by the time i got my last stand off of the stage.

people who were there to see us didn't wanna pay to see you guys. i didn't know it at the time, but most people in this town hate you. wonder why? oh, and since we didn't get any of the door money, i'm glad they didn't.

you guys played the longest set i've ever heard. every song was like 10 minutes long. i couldn't stick around cuz i was bored to tears. no wonder you needed us to start early, you have so much to say and play!

hey i'm glad you are a full-time, professional touring band. i'm sure you have lots of fans and plenty to be proud of, but i don't care to have anything to do with you. we're happy doing what we're doing and not used to such professionalism, if that's what being a dick is called. we were asked tp play with you guys by your bandmates, not the other way around. had i known anything at all about you guys other than your name, i wouldn't have. you don't have to worry about sharing a bill with us anymore. i believe we've had enough of professional bands. we're just in it to have fun and play some rock' n' roll. fuck the protention and rigid schedule shit. maybe we're just not up to your grandiose level.
you're right, i don't understand. hopefully, i never will.

i forgot to add that although i was absolutely not an asshole in asking you to get started (you were just biased by the fact that your friends had given you an opinion of me before you ever spoke to me and decided to take your silly show-beef to the internet like a baddass hoping all of memphis would chime in and add their two cents about why i suck rather than stand up and say something when i told you to play instead of picking up your instruments and playing like a good boy), i dont deny that "most people in this town hate me". i dont deny that i can be a horrible asshole (even though its usually to people that are themselves hint hint). ya didnt get paid because your friends didnt pay AND you wernt there to collect. Who cares how long we played it was our show and we were on last. hell ive sat in a club in brooklyn long after my band was in bed till 5 am to collect 40 bucks.

get over it. its boring.

wow, i guess you put me in my place.

i'll never post another negative thing about you anywhere again. you're right: i wanted everyone of my friends(total of 2 or 3) that post here to put you down. you are so important and i can't stand to see you so successful.

actually, i never heard anything about you at all until after the show. my first impression was you sure are uptight. then i heard about you from others. so i judged you from your actions, the other stuff just added to the dislike.

but you're right. i should've said something to you then, even though you didn't address me directly. at the time i thought it was funny, but it bothered me later.

as far as not sticking around, i can only listen to stuff i don't like for so long before i have to go. 1 1/2 hours was too much, and it didn't sound like ya'll were gonna finish anytime soon.

but whatever, i'l leave it at a difference of opinion and taste. we learned a valuable lesson from it. never play with bands who take themselves too seriously cuz they take all the fun out of it. so thanks buddy!

too true, assuming you're talking about your band.

The real questions are how and why did you dig up this month old thread. You would have had to go back about 6 pages. Did you search the forum for your band's name to see if there was any buzz on the Goner board about the HG.?

I was at the now memorable Jets & Gunroom show. I managed to catch the 30 minute set of the Jets, while wondering the whole time, why on earth they would start a show before 11 PM when there were maybe ten people in the whole place. So, asshole from Halfacre Gunroom, if six of the people there were for the Six String Jets, where was your impressive army of fans? Everyone knows that Midtown Memphis is full of slackers that will arrive to shows why after 11 PM because no one wants to sit around and wait for bands to start. Maybe that was the problem with this show, who knows... Also, if you think about it, The Six String Jets are comprised of four guys, is six guests really so unreasonable?? I have a feeling that the only reason you would bring up such bullshit is due to the fact that none of those people had any desire to watch your shitty band and you probably only pulled in $20 for the whole night? For a big touring band, you certainly didn't fare so well at this show. Considering such a low turnout, I bet you'd even charge your own mom, sister, etc. to get in the show just so you can make a buck. this is our life and now its our living as you so sweetly put it. Maybe one day you'll make it to Bonaroo...

I just stumbled onto this old thread. I don't know anything about any of these people, or anything about the "incident", but was humored to see that this band's website is now gone. Guess they broke up?

I think that bands that throw raw meat in the crowd would be a lot cooler if they had grills (charcoal to "keep it real") on stage, cooked up the meat then served up to their fans at the end of their set. Hell, they could even mic the grill for added ambiance in their sound.

You must have been one of the 6 people to see that Skinny Puppy show at Antenna (I heard it was much worse the next day).

Rod once told me a story about Skinny Puppy playing at Antenna. He said that Steve forgot to promote the show, no ad, no flyers, no nothing. Nobody even knew they were playing. The crowd was in single digits. The band had brought a cow carcass to slaughter on stage as part of their performance. They put on their full show for the 6 or 8 people that were there. They made no door money, and hence refused to clean up the bloody remains after the show was over. Steve closed up the bar and left it all there. The next night Sobering was booked. Rod said that when they showed up the whole place just smelled like death, and their band had to clean up all the mess before they could open the bar.

I wasn't there for either show, that's just the story as I recall hearing it second hand.
