Goner Message Board / ???? / Perfectly good songs ruined (or almost) by terrible backing vocals...

Here are my big two...

1) "Silver Machine" by Hawkwind. The screechy "silver machine!" at the end drives me up the wall. An otherwise almost perfect song. But that bit is like vocal nails on a chalkboard for me.
2) "There She Goes Again" by the Velvet Underground. Such a great pop song, but those backing vocals... ugh.

Anything with whispered backing vox is usually out for me. Whispering in songs creeps me out, like gives me chills in a bad way.

Haha, I just listened to it again to make sure I wasn't misremembering it or thinking of an alternative version, but nope. 100% stand by that one. Sounds like someone's gross wet breath in my ear.

For sure. Though I feel like by 'n large those songs would still be bad without them.

"Lonely Weekends" by Charlie Rich. Would've been so much better with no backing vocals.

This was released on the same label, but a blue version, and it added back up vox that sucked most of the rawness out of it (blue version not on YT):
