Goner Message Board / ???? / Modern post punk

I've been reading "Rip It Up and Start Again" and tracking down the really interesting bands I didn't know about. I was thinking about newer records I own that I would consider post punk. Ex Cult is a great example, that's an awesome post punk sounding record. I listened to Total Control the other day. Carpet Rash, the side b opener from Henge Beat, is one of the best post punk songs ever. In my opinion, it slays almost all of the greats in the late 70s,early 80s.

Don't worry about genres, just listen to what you like

That's great advice. You should just be happy that I'm finally getting Total Control. We've talked about them since I was blown away bu them at GF 7, and was disappointed by the 45s. They're not post punk.... I'm not sure what they are, but a cool freaking band. I'm just saying that that I've been listening to a lot of post punk, defined by a cool book I'm reading, and that song is genius.

I like to read a lot of books about music I get on these kicks and like to learn about bands. I'm just saying that If Total Control had released that song in 1980 that they would be mentioned in that book. Great song.

I think total control is a good example of doing what you like, totally differant animal between the studio and the live stage. But whether or not you like them, very good in both realms.

i always think of "post punk" as more defining a scene or time period than a sound. everything is post punk now. like "yeah we're a new wave band." i get what it means but i dont really like it. everything is everything 'n roll.

isnt everything "post dubstep" now?

UV RACE could be on those Australia Can't Stop it Comps from 30 years ago...

Basically whenever anybody calls a band "postpunk" it means I'll like it for about 5 minutes and then get way bored with it...

post pubstep

^ I would listen to that. Pubstep is like Chumbawumba right? I love Chumbawumba, well you know that one song anyway.

I like post punk, but I'm as fed up with punk as I am post-punk...I've been getting into post-rock....you know like nature and stuff...thunderstorms, locust, etc...or sometimes I just stick ear plugs in my ears.

How can they be "rock" when most of the music is sampled (as far as I know?)

Do you know that most major studios use drum machines or at least triggers on the drums? That's so lame. That was the norm in 90's for sure...Nirvana's Nevermind was recorded like that.

But seriously how can Cumbawamba be pubrock when it's all keyboards? Pubrock is like Dr. Feelgood or The Pirates or something...

c'mon, dude. you have to be aware chumbawumba started as an anarchist band like 30 years ago. don't think they were doing as much tub thumpin back then, probably no sampler. they maintain they maintain their anarchist label.

Is Bar Rock ("you know, the kind of music you hear in bars") considered Post Pub Rock?

Or is Post Pub Rock what you listen to when you can't sleep for all the drugs you've done in the bathroom at the pub and so you're staring at the wall thinking about how you've got to go to brunch at 10:30 in the morning with your in-laws?

I dunno man. Can't you just shut up and FEEL the music once in a while? FEEL it.

not being able to sleep and facing BRUNCH the next morning doesnt sound as bad as a lot of other things. like work, or a 10 hour drive.

Sam you're reading my diary...that episode ends with me puking egg souffle all over the bathroom and fumbling inadequately to clean it up with toilet paper before the mimosa (really a screw driver) finally hits me and I coerce the dog into the bathroom to do the cleaning. Also it's Easter morning. Soon to be a homemade youtube movie.
