Fuck. I read these "so and so" is a goner threads all the time, about half the time I have to Google them. This one hurts. I can't remember a time when his music was not a part of my life.

you knew it was coming with his age and how he treated himself but still seems a bit unreal. as Johnny Cash replied when asked who was the best country singer... "you mean besides George Jones?"

RIP

He played out here about ten years ago. It was right after the start of the Iraq war so there was a pro-military theme to the whole evening. He was selling his...was it BBQ sauce? He also had these t-shirts that showed an F-15, an American flag, and Saddam and Dubya's faces and said "Saddam, can you hear us now?"

Wish I'd bought one of those.

He's not usually thought of as a songwriter but yesterday I was listening to some of the early Starday recordings and was amazed by all the great songs he wrote: "Why Baby Why," "Long Time to Forget," "Seasons of My Heart," "Just One More," "Ragged But Right"...damn.

RIP.

I didn't buy any, but i'm sure it twas bangin.

That's what it says on wikipedia too.

Still, George's rendition is fantastic and a classic in its own right.
