Goner Message Board / ???? / Memphis: The Last Hi-Tone Show. Ever. Sort-of.
Posted: Feb 20, 2013 9:13 pm
So, Saturday night is the last show at the actual venue of the world-famous Hi-Tone. John has great things coming up, I know, just at different spots.
Anyway, The Hi-Tone, Goner Records and Rocket Science Audio have always been proud to host Gonerfest, and the venue will always be missed (share your favorite story here). Maybe the owner will open the Karate shop back up, and I'll finally finish getting the orange belt I was working on before I stopped going in third grade.

At any rate, good luck to John and crew.

As you may or may not know, The Barbaras and The Oblivians will be playing Saturday night. For those Goners around the world that have puveyed the joint, enjoy the show with us here in Memphis, as we all fondly recall our best memories (not good or bad, just the best ones; those we can still pick out of the drunken haze of spending so many good times there).

Saturday night, we'll stream it here:

I actually have a picture of that somewhere; iPad had a delay, but they were watching; with the actual band playing 12 SECONDS IN THE FUTURE 20 ft. in front of them.

This song in my head makes the loss of the Hi-Tone not all doom and gloom. Thanks Robin for the stream tomorrow. Gonna watch it from Abe's treehouse here in Kzoo.

If it works, you should also thank Kyle, Jackson and Chris.
Love y'all. See and talk on the internet tomorrow.

Jack Stands
Member Posted: Aug 14, 2007 7:20 am Quote O.K. So it just came out today that Jack O. and the Noise Choir are playing Saturday. I love them both, but unfortunately, we're playing the same night withThe Dranks and Antique Curtains.
Someone please record that show. Joel?

In the meantime, I need to let you people in on something.

The Hi-Tone, as you may know it, used to be Khang Rhee Karate (Korea-style). It was where Elvis took his martial arts stuff in between chasing chicks in cotton panties and rubbing peanut butter and bananas on them before frying them in a turkey deep fryer. So the story goes.

I want you to know something else about that place.

Picture a 3rd grader. A pudgy, yet loveable fellow who'd had enough of the bullying out in Cordova by jackasses in pink polo knits with their collars turned upright. The "Preppy Handbook" had come out, and tools were everywhere.
Well, not for this little warrior. He wanted to roundhouse those sheepish faux-yachters. He said "fuck you flyback butt-cutters! I won't shower, and I'll take KARATE!", and he smote a few on the playground the next day.
And so, he did. There at Khang Rhee's. Where he pummelled his way to Yellow Belt. Did push-ups for discipline where the liquor cage in the back is now. And beat another man until almost death (possibly from laughing), somewhere near the kitchen.
Yes. That boy's blood is there. His sweat is on the walls next to the sound
booth. It's there.

But truth is, that boy grew to a man. A man, playing in the STAAGS!!! with the Antique Curtains and some other band called the Dranks, or something at the Buccaneer Saturday night.

You can see the blood in one place. You can take it from another (I'm really susceptible to blood blisters on my fingers; that's how I play bass).

I don't know Korean, but if I did, I wouold honor my former master by saying:

Love you, man. Wherever you are.
