Goner Message Board / ???? / Are there any good hardcore bands left?
Posted: Dec 18, 2012 12:13 pm

I only care about WETBRAIN. Did anything else worth a damn come out this year?
Posted: Dec 18, 2012 12:17 pm

I guess the last TRAGEDY record is good but at this point they just sound like Bolt Thrower. Which is a good thing, but I wouldn't call them a hc band these days.
Posted: Dec 18, 2012 12:54 pm

Culo is the only current HC band Ive listened to in the last coupla years. Especially their Military Trend Ep. You can check them out on YouTube.

NOT. That shit is boring and NO SOLOS.

Crazy Spirit
Posted: Dec 18, 2012 1:49 pm

I enjoy the new REPLICA flexi.

Posted: Dec 18, 2012 1:59 pm

Crazy Spirit are pretty cool. The HANK WOOD lp is great, and gets called hc, but just sounds like a more punk, angrier Mummies to me. DAWN OF HUMANS rule. Gasmiasma, from New Orleans, are pretty killer. HELLKONTROLL too.
Posted: Dec 18, 2012 2:03 pm

Oh the Bukkake Boys lp is pretty good. School Jerks are good. The Boston Strangler lp was cool for about a week, but that style of hc is pretty boring to me.
Posted: Dec 18, 2012 2:08 pm

Are Wasted Time still around? Theyre good. Ropes (ex Repos) are good.
Posted: Dec 18, 2012 2:13 pm

"retro" but great (and from sardinia!):

http://slovenly.bandcamp.com/album/thee-oops-happy-charlie-ep

the 2x 7" is FINALLY shipping today. this thing was supposed to be out on the 11th. no thanks to the pressing plant.

greatest drummer, handsome singer, best band
Posted: Dec 18, 2012 3:00 pm

Holy Shit, School Jerks, and Wetbrain are all awesome.

Id also say Avon Ladies, Gay Kiss, and Man Bites Dog all from AZ are pretty stellar.
Posted: Dec 18, 2012 3:19 pm

Clusterfuck from CT is awesome too.
Posted: Dec 18, 2012 3:28 pm

World get ready for my new HC unit: Paterno!

WETBRAIN demo is still ruling my stereo. Nothing has come close to it this year.
Posted: Dec 20, 2012 11:09 am

GLAM (Spain) have a new 12" out that should be great. Their 7" that came out a few years ago on Lengua Armada ruled.

I've been listening to this 7" by this hardcore band called Brain Tumor
Its called fuck you forever and I like it alot

I also just checked out crazy spirit and Its great
Posted: Dec 28, 2012 2:22 pm

Crazy Spirit rule but they would be better if they changed up the drums a bit. Every song sounds like Darby Crash singing over a distorted version of the King of the Hill theme song.
Posted: Dec 28, 2012 4:16 pm

if they changed up the drums a bit

isn't that the achilles heel of hardcore in general?
Posted: Dec 28, 2012 6:27 pm

Sometimes, but especially when it's cow punk psychobilly drums like CxSx.
Posted: Dec 30, 2012 11:51 pm

Crazy Spirit is way lame. When I saw em Mauser mopped them off the stage. Way fuckin overrated. Watered down Confuse is really boring. Get the new Crimewave lp if you can find it or try looking for stuff Fugitive Family. By the way, ive got the Crazy Spirit cassette demo if you got a $150
dollars.

Crazy Spirit and Hank Wood are both boring as shit to my ears.
Not a fan of really any hardcore outta NY except the first Reagan Youth 12" and AFs Victim In Pain.

Oh and Born Against.
Posted: Jan 2, 2013 12:04 pm

Vile Nation was a hardcore outfit made up of myself and Seth from Useless Eaters and a revolving rythym section that included some "Barbaras" when we made this record

Posted: Jan 9, 2013 12:09 pm

Hank Wood (not really hardcore), Brown Sugar, NASA Space Universe (best live band), Condominium, Dawn of Humans, Pusrad, Holy Shit!, etc. Hardcore has been pretty strong the last couple years. Crazy Spirit seems like something that's great for hardcore genre types, of which I am not.

Not a fan of really any hardcore outta NY

Most of the 1988-1994 ABC-NO-RIO/Squat or Rot scene were pretty
good...

I'd say thats the last "scene" in NYC worth paying attention to....
Posted: Jan 9, 2013 1:18 pm

Modra, Ballroom, Hank Wood, Dawn of Humans, I enjoy pissing on NYC but it's been pretty good there lately. Was never into the squat scene, so I dunno...
Posted: Jan 9, 2013 2:40 pm

Heard a lot of that abc no rio stuff at that time and some of it was ok(although nothing that really jumped out at me and made me take notice) most of it was background noise. It was kind of like that scumrock tape (or scene if you were involved) for me except at least the scumrock scene had NB&SH and Traci Lords Ex Lovers.
Posted: Jan 9, 2013 2:41 pm

It wasnt fabulous...but pretty self supportive and freindly. the lack of trust fund twats made it more attractive I'm sure.
Posted: Jan 9, 2013 3:13 pm

No idea about any of that and when I'm typing or talking about music I enjoy none of that matters. I might not want to hang around some people but if they make awesome music Ill still listen to it and admit I like it.
Posted: Jan 10, 2013 10:13 am

Yeah true...awful spoiled horrible people make good HC as well as the nice ones do.
Posted: Jan 10, 2013 11:40 am

ABC No Rio could accomodate about 20 people as I recall. We had to play on the bar.
Posted: Jan 10, 2013 4:15 pm

I got that Crazy Spirit lp in the mail today and I like it a lot. Great packaging. That poster rules. I don't mind the drums. The whole album is a pretty great art/hardcore experience. I'm amazed at all the directions hardcore had taken. What is crust? I wanna buy a good crust album.
Posted: Jan 10, 2013 5:38 pm

I wanna buy a good crust album.

The Disrupt CD on Century Media.
Posted: Jan 10, 2013 6:15 pm

Relapse, not Century Media.
Posted: Jan 10, 2013 6:25 pm

not sure where you (patrick d or whoever really) live, but Holy Shit! will be in Kansas City, MS on Saturday the 12th at a place called Harlings and Carbondale on Friday the 11th at some house show (that doesn't really help, but in kansas city at that bar).
Posted: Jan 10, 2013 7:05 pm

Cole: AMEBIX. By far the best crust band. Maybe one of the only good ones.
Posted: Jan 10, 2013 10:51 pm

His Hero Is Gone. Memphis crust

I'm really starting to question the musical roads I'm traveling. I'm trying to find sounds that are new and interesting to me. Just exploring a bit. I bought an lp by a band called Cloud Rat. Supposedly grind. I'm thinking Napalm Death, the only grind band I've ever heard. It's not that but I'm kinda digging it. My screamo kid loves it. That's a red flag.We are constantly at musical war.
I'm introducing him to awesome music(and the occasional show) and he tries to deny the awesomenes....always failings. Now he sees it as I'm coming around to his music. I can't abide this. Luckily I came across an lp by a hardcore band from Boston.....Green Beret...."Violence Is Their Currency " that set shit straight. Also bought my first Poison Idea record.....Holy shit.

Which P.I. Mr Cole?

Most of their output is stellar so I'm sure you got a good one

Avoid them live tho...No Pig Champion no P.I....

THIS.

Now he sees it as I'm coming around to his music. I can't abide this.

They're tricky buggers. Make the kid come around. ALWAYS! I just taught my 8 yr old girl how to use the turntable, now she can't get enough. She's finally decided (because of someone at school, certainly not my years of wasted effort) that she liked "metal" and "punk". The other night I got to lay on the couch and say "Hey, put that Motorhead record on!"...and she totally dug it because she tought she was in control! I still wake up with Katy Perry in my fuggin head...but she's an 8 year old girl, and shitty pop music forces are strong.

Record Collectors are Pretentious Assholes is great too.
Posted: Feb 6, 2013 7:06 am

The "Best of" cd on Taaaang collects Record Collectors, Pick Your King, one or two other "lps" and a later single.

Cole, have you heard Negative Approach, Void, DRI?
Posted: Feb 6, 2013 8:23 am

Got "Tied Down" by NA. Crossover was the soundtrack to my life for awhile. I've read of Void.....DC? Never heard them. I'll check em out.
Posted: Feb 6, 2013 9:51 am

Void rule! First Die Kreuzen lp is great. The Fix lp is also awesome.

crossover is terrible, dealing with it is thee album

Talk Is Poison may be my favorite hardcore band of all time.

INFEST is the best.

Holy fuck they played a reunion show the other day.
Sounds like they never stopped. Awesome footage!

Posted: Feb 8, 2013 8:50 am

I can't stop listening to this D-Clone creation and destroy lp. My experiences with hardcore has always been the classic stuff or newer bands basically giving their take on it. This is basically a wall of noise. No real hooks. Just pummeling riffs, screaming, and a crazy driving beat. "d-beat" is what I've learned they call it. I like it. I usually like my music to be raw but have a melody. I'm really digging this though. I love that moment of revelation when you finally "get" something. If I could only make this happen with jazz.

Check out CONFUSE, Cole. Pioneers (and the best) of that style. Also check out everything on CRUST WAR records.
Posted: Feb 8, 2013 9:59 am

Done Pat. I just bought the "Nuclear Addicts " ep for eight bucks from eBay .
Posted: Feb 10, 2013 12:11 am

I bought an album about a year ago...Homostupids "the intern".....listened to it once and never bothered again. Until tonight . I love this record. I've listened to it about 10 times tonight while playing through Dragon Quest 7. I love it when all the kids are staying the night somewhere and the wife crashes early. I nerd out.
Posted: Feb 10, 2013 4:43 pm

Homostupids are pretty killer. I like the weirdo electronic stuff more than the punk stuff, but it's all good.

GOOD CALL on that Confuse. "Spending Loud Night" is my favorite of theirs though. Absolutely fucking devastating for 1983.

Posted: Feb 10, 2013 10:04 pm

I've been listening to my old DS-13 stuff recently while I run. Swedish d-beat straight edge hardcore, pretty intense.
Posted: Feb 10, 2013 10:17 pm

Cole, check out Framtid
Posted: Feb 12, 2013 1:02 pm

Homostupids are pretty killer. I like the weirdo electronic stuff more than the punk stuff, but it's all good.

Same here. The "rock" band is really good live, though. Never found the recordings too exciting outside the first ep ("Brutal Bunny"), which was awesome "weirdo electronic stuff," and Factorymen, their side project that's like BrutalBunny/weirdelectronicstuff.

The new Brain Tumors LP is good. Too many "Brain" named hardcore bands.
Posted: Feb 12, 2013 4:41 pm

Yep, Brutal Birthday and the Factorymen stuff rules.
Posted: Feb 12, 2013 6:19 pm

I love Framtid. I had to steal it. I hate doing that. Under The. ashes goes for 90 bucks on discogs! I just downloaded it. It rules! I was thinking today at work.....I work at a Toyota manufacturing plant, there's a lot of Japanese people around me every day. How big is punk in Japan? What are my chances of talking to a dude that might be into Japanese punk? I once took a shot and asked one about Japanese cinema and it went really well..
Posted: Feb 12, 2013 6:33 pm

Also my Confuse record came in today and it is killer! It's a reissue on blue jug records. I have no problem with that. Someone should reissue Framtid. I don't play but the bass player of Confuse sounds amazing.
Posted: Feb 12, 2013 10:17 pm

More about my new japanese hardcore obsession. Ive been listening to Gauze online. Love em. Started searching online and found a Gauze t shirt on ebay. Bought it. Found a copy of fuckheads/something else I can't remember dbl lp from a store in Italy. Never ordered anything internationally but I wanted this so I bit.paypal payment is being proccessed. Is that normal? Never had that happen with pay pal before. Its always immediate .

Gauze to me is the gold standard for Japanese HxC...

Years and years of consistant blazing power...

I think you would LOVE Paintbox as well...plus check out The Comes "no side" EP...

Theres a boot of that out there and usually pretty affordable...as the OG is stupid pricey
Posted: Feb 13, 2013 5:19 pm

No man only one....in blue springs ms. I help build the engines. Is he into the same music we are? If he is we should hang. He could help ask the Japanese dudes about punk bands. A lot of them speak decent English.
Posted: Feb 13, 2013 6:50 pm

Paintbox are badass! They also have a reissue on ugly pop which is a label I like a lot... ...for cheap! I'll pick that up. So sorry I hijacked this thread.I just happen to have a few extra bucks and discovered some music that I'm really digging.

my buddy luke is into good music. a little less punk, maybe. not really a hardcore guy but like, uh...let's see. he loves blue cheer. dig? we spent lots of time getting nugged and jamming sabbath riffs. that kinda thing.

also knows quite a bit about some japrock that never made it so big over here, as he lived over there for several years.

Hatebreed is the worst band I've ever seen out of thousands.
Posted: Mar 26, 2013 7:53 am

Back to hardcore.... My Japanese hardcore obsession has eased.... not gone away....but I'm back on hardcore American soil. I love Sickoids from Philly. Hoax from Boston are bad ass. Hassler and School Jerks are from Canada but basically still American with better health care...and they're awesome. For my money, that Sickoids lp is where it's at. I love that thing.
Posted: Mar 26, 2013 9:37 am

Sickoids LP is pretty good, saw them in STL last summer.

Cole check out Kremlin from Toronto, same drummer as School Jerks.

School Jerks played Memphis with Sector Zero and Pop Guns 3 or 4 years ago, around 10 people showed up.
Posted: Mar 26, 2013 10:19 am

Hatebreed is the worst band I've ever seen out of thousands.

Indeed. Had the unfortunate experience of seeing them open up for Slayer...total fucking meathead-core. A barely-earned GED in musical form.

Let me also add, if any member of your band wears a hockey jersey, your band sucks.
Posted: Mar 26, 2013 11:17 am

Thanks for the tip. Kremlin are really bad ass. I found out they have a record coming out on Beach Impediment which is where I got that Hassler ep. I'll pick that up. Oh Canada!

Kremlin- Drunk in the Gulag is on hell of cool hardcore record.

KREMLIN kind of restored my faith in hardcore. Maybe it was the atmosphere of a flooded out grocery store filled with burnt cars, powered by a generator, but that band is punk as fuck. KILLED IT last night.

Desire & Florida Ave. I don't know what store it was. Cops shut it down, but I hope they still have shows there.

I'm amazed that I'm the only one to mention NASA Space Universe. If they come to your town (they're touring again soon) you need to check them out. I've seen a good number of the bands listed, and NASA are better (not to say the others aren't good, many are).

I think that Kremlin tour ends in Michigan, unfortunately, and doesn't make it to Chicago/Milwaukee.
Posted: Apr 25, 2013 2:36 pm

Whoah. That's way up there.
Posted: Apr 25, 2013 10:51 pm

NASA Space Universe is an awesome name. I'm fixing to Google them. That Kremlin show sounds like it was bad ass. Sickoids have a new 12" out. I also ordered this comp put out by Toxic State called Ground Zero NYC. I'm really interested in Hardcore comps. I just bought Land of Nod and I love it.

Hounds Of Hate.

Seeing NSU with HOAX next week. Should be cool. Kromosom and a couple other NY bands are playing the same night.

Really into this band NERV from Iowa. They're playing June 1 in NOLA with Satan's Satyrs. Gonna be a rager.
