Goner Message Board / ???? / laptop vs. tablet
Posted: Feb 24, 2012 4:51 pm

My laptop is getting old and slow and won't hold a charge for shit anymore. I'm starting to think about replacement options. I have a desktop computer for getting work done, but it's nice to have something portable and convenient for looking shit up while on the couch, traveling, etc.

do those of you with iPads or whatever actually use them functionally and practically or is it just a toy? if you were going on an extended vacation would you bring your tablet or would you rather have a laptop? are there any devices besides the iPad that are recommendable?

I think it depends on what you want to do on your extended vacation. Do you already own a smartphone?

I don't have a tablet, but I have a netbook and a smartphone and I've found the netbook to be pretty useful in that it has a real keyboard, I can plug in a mouse and I can run whatever the hell I want on it. I have relatives with ipads and they seem cool, but they don't really do much more than my smartphone does.

I really want to like tablets but just don't see the need for one. I'm really curious to try the Samsung Note out.

Yeah I gots an android phone which already does most of what I would want for travelling and sitting on the toilet, but looking at that small screen for too long is painful and the battery life isn't really suited to extended use.

This thing looks pretty sweet. at that price though it seems like i might as well just get an ipad...or a laptop...or wait for the ipad 3.

Windy had a Motorola XOOM tablet. It was cool, but we gave it to the boy because she wanted a tablet that had more accessory options.

Windy got an iPad 2 yesterday and she doesn't like the camera -- apparently the photo quality is not sufficient for an eBay power seller such as herself.

If I were considering buying a tablet or netbook or whatever, I'd probably get a Samsung Galaxy Tab. I like all things Android, and the 10.1 looks pretty badass.

If you must have a physical keyboard, I'd get a Chromebook. My daughter has a Dell netbook and it's decent, but it only comes with Windows 7 Starter or Basic or whatever, and it's kind of slow.

I want this for my everything computer. Pricey, but would really fit in well with what I do professionally and personally. Tablet, touchscreen, real computing and rugged. I really like the mobile keyboard too.

I really like my ipad. Its perfect for hanging on the couch, patio, etc. The camera actually is good, but you might need to get an ap for the highest quality. it shoots hd video and I have garageband and imovie.

My work got me an iPad 2 as part of a pilot program. I fucking hate it. Never was there a more useless, overpriced piece of garbage.

The camera sucks. The text editing on my Droid 2 is lightyears ahead of the fucking iPad. Apps are overpriced and worthless. Fuck this shit.

Get a laptop.

Considering I have two other laptops at my disposal via work, I think I'm gonna wait for that Transformer Prime to get a little cheaper and get one. Thing looks like a beast. Gonna get a mount for it right on my steering wheel.

I would go for a tablet over a netbook or laptop. The tablets have all the capabilities of the netbooks/laptops, but they are infinitely more portable, especially for travel. Much more comfortable for lying in bed or on the couch than lugging around a laptop or netbook.

That said, the ipad2 doesn't impress me just yet. It has the accessories I want for moving my internet selling stuff out of the office on the main floor of our house to the basement room. I like having choices, and there are slim to none for the xoom. I thought after a year or so, there would be more, but there aren't.

The camera on the xoom is much better quality, but the xoom is bulkier and heavier than the ipad2. i.e. the ipad2 cameras are .7 and 1.3 megapixel cameras. That's utter shit - it's 2012. I've been reading up on the camera apps for the ipad2 and basically they all say you can't shine a turd, but with the photo editing capabilities, the photo quality can be improved. the camera on the xoom was fine for point and shoot ebay photos with no editing required. I'm trying to streamline my processes, and I just took a major step back.

I think that whatever you get tablet wise (if that's what you end up doing), have a matching phone. I had more compatibility with the droid/xoom combo than my current droid phone/ipad2 combo. For ipad2 owners that have an iphone, the camera issue is moot because they can use the phone photos on the ipad2.

I don't understand why Apple hasn't jumped all over this. Make a full computer in tablet form. It wouldn't be any bigger than their laptops, and their laptops are already small as shit. I would kill each and every one of you for a Mac Pad Pro right now!

Ummm...no.

Transformer Prime apparently doesn't have built-in 3G/4G... so you need to tether to your phone or use the wi-fi network wherever you are.

You're a built-in tether...

Really the only thing it needs is internet for porn, so, ummm...yes.

I dig the iPads quite a bit. If you can hold off, they're releasing a new ipad3 soon and I'm sure the prices on the ipad2 will go down quite a bit?

I am not an apple devotee, the iPad really works well for me, especially for work. I use it as a teaching tool, I record students using GarageBand and I can shoot and edit hd videos. Plus Skype, email and calendar management. It's not as powerful as my laptop, but it's way more portable. I also did not activate the 3G I just use wifi, never been a problem.

Axiotron has been all over it for a few years now. They're kinda slow on keeping up with Mac tho. Don't even have i7 specs up yet.

A little bulkier than iPads, also.

I got a Nook Color for Christmas, and it's perfect for internet browsing and reading ebooks/pdfs and Netflix/internet/Twitter while my girlfriend watches bad TV. It's small and thin enough to bring with you on the road without noticing. If you need to get any real work done get an ipad.

Really the only thing it needs is internet for porn, so, ummm...yes.

I suppose if the only thing you use a computer for is watching porn, you might have a point.
If you want to do something that requires a lot of memory or a powerful processor, burn CDs/DVDs, have more than one USB port/any Firewire ports, then...no.

I also forgot that you might want to be able to use Flash...for watching porn.

I rooted my Nook Color so it's full android running CM7.1 and soon to ICS.
Pretty easy and so much better as you get the full market and apps/ and not just the crappy Barnes and Nobles selection. Wifi only (but you could tether). I rooted to the SD card so I can dual boot between stock Color and Android, but Android is way better....

Kindle Fire is lame because it doesn't have the side load (microSD) options of the Color.

Imaxipads are fine, but people look retarded taking pictures with them...that's what your phone is for..

be able to use Flash

You can, on the far superior Android devices.

that's what work computers and USB hubs are for.

Yes, but if it was already a computer, you wouldn't need all that shit, and you could take it with you where ever you go.

pffffft.
