Restaurants?
Shows?
Bars?
Topless performing arts centers?
Record stores?

We'll be in Pennsylvania for nine days starting next friday and are spending a few days in Philly. Never been, so i need all the suggestions you can give me.

Thanks.

If I had to narrow it down to a few can't miss joints, I'd say Nick's, Tony Luke's, Pat's, the pretzel factory, and the Italian market.

Sandwiches:

Pat's - http://www.hollyeats.com/Pats.htm

Jim's - http://www.hollyeats.com/JimsSteaks.htm

Nick's Roast Beef - http://www.hollyeats.com/NicksRoastBeef.htm

Tony Luke's - http://www.hollyeats.com/TonyLukes.htm

Sarcone's - http://www.hollyeats.com/Sarcones.htm

Chickie's - http://www.hollyeats.com/Chickies.htm

George's - http://www.hollyeats.com/Geroges.htm

Breakfast and other food:

Sabrina's - http://www.hollyeats.com/Sabrinas.htm

Carmen's - http://www.hollyeats.com/Carmans.htm

Reading Terminal Market on 12th ad Arch. This is a huge old indoor market with tons of great good stands. You can get good cheese steaks and roast pork all under one roof and centrally located. If you don't have a car and your in center city area, you could get a lot of good eating done here.

Soft Pretzel Factory - http://www.roadfood.com/Restaurant/Reviews/1231/center-city-pretzel-co

Italian Market 9th street between Christian and Washington. Really great stuff and within a few blocks of half of the above places.

Drinks:

Bob & Barbara's 1509 South Street

Dirty Frank's 13th and Pine.

jerryd -- Windy and I are going to miss you by just a few days. Bummer.

If cheesesteaks is your thing, you should also try Campos and Sonny's.

For Crepes, go to Beau Monde -- it's awesome.

This year will be our third Thanksgiving in a row there. Philly rules.

Eat at Hardena.
Eat at Hardena.

Philly doesn't have as many cool bars as it should for a city its size. I like Ray's Happy Birthday Bar -- look up the address, it's been too long since I lived there.

Sometimes I wish I still lived in Philly. Sometimes.

Go see the Magic Gardens on 10th street. Down from the magic gardens a few blocks away and on a side street is an italian place with THE BEST meatball subs. evah.

I'll be going there a few days after you leave.

I'll also be hitting Franklin Fountain and having a Mt. Vesuvius sundae.

Eastern State Penitentiary is on my list again this time; I missed it last trip.

At the reading Terminal Market don't miss D'Nics pork sandwich or the Flying Monkey's whoopie pies

If you want a fancy dinner go to Parc near Rittenhouse Square

Sorry we'll miss you guys. And yes, cheesesteaks is my thing, so thanks for the recommendation.

Hopefully we'll be able to catch a show and hit some of the science museums as well.

Damn! I was gonna say Tequila Sunrise Records - but then just learned that they closed the shop (back in July?!). I always liked going in there......

Definitely Bob & Barbara's mentioned above.

Ron's Ribs - a tiny, grungy hole in the wall at 1630 South Street (just a block from Bob & Barbara's) has great bbq and soul food.

Kung Fu Necktie for shows - http://kungfunecktie.com/

Johnny Brenda's for shows - http://www.johnnybrendas.com/

Sometimes The Northstar Bar for shows - http://northstarbar.com/

Khyber Pass to drink (and sometimes see shows if they are still doin' it) - 56 S. 2nd Street - http://www.khyberpasspub.com/

I always like going to Philly. Fun town.

I didn't read all the recommendations, I just got excited and posted.

Mutter museum is probably more fun without grouchy kids in tow.

There's also a walking path that cuts through some cool neighborhoods. It was mapped out by Kevin Bacon's dad (yes, THAT Kevin Bacon) who was a city planner.

I think there is also an African American museum/tour and a Jewish history museum...I have a shit -ton of notes of things I wanted to do/see in Philly. I'll be happy to dig them back out if you want.

If you have time that would be great!

hey dude we just got back from there.

fifthing the Mutter museum. just don't go right before lunch. it might ruin your appetite. it's pretty close to Rittenhouse Square, so you should go by this place called Monk's. That is if you like really awesome mussels and 8-11% Belgian beers. it's not exactly cheap, but it's great.

We leave tomorrow morning.

I'm looking forward to food. good food. And lots of it.

It is pretty cool, but save your money and just jump up and down on the steps like Rocky. You never see anyone doing that.

It's the biggest collection of Duchamp anywhere. It's The Large Glass. It's Etant Donnes - excellent perversion for Jerry! It's also Hans Haacke's "Broken RM." Nice work there, Hans.

Totally worth it for Dada / Surrealism collection. If you're into Duchamp it's THE SPOT.

My fav was always "Why Not Sneeze" and "Given - The Waterfall, etc." as above.

It IS a great museum but when did art museums get so damn expensive? OCCUPY!

I did forget to ask if anyone had any good hotel advice???
Posted: Nov 15, 2011 9:09 pm

Just stay downtown - almost every thing is within walking distance and you will save a ton on gas/taxis. There's a hotel next to Reading Terminal Market/Convention Center that is kind of cheap....but it's in a busy spot, so may be noisy.

Parking will be a bith - some? many? of the hotels in city center don't have free parking - valet is the only option.

We got a Sheraton next to reading terminal market so we're set.
