ok, this is just my perception of things, and it may have been different in person with a louder guitar, but here is my take. first of all, the new bass wolf is no billy. part of guitar wolf's image was always the greaser look, and greasers dont have long scraggly hair and goatees. obviously guitar wolf was never about expert musicianship, but in my opinion seji's extreme antics were perfectly balanced by a rock solid foundation of toru and billys rhythm work. the new bass wolf is just too over the top, he hits tons of raw open E notes at the wrong times, and plays so hard his bass is always out of tune. its hard to imagine a band that has always basically been a cartoon becoming a caricature of itself, but that is how i see it. they have always been derivative of themselves, but this takes it to a new level in my opinion. personally, i liked it when a song or two were long and drawn out with incomprehensible screaming, when it becomes the majority of songs it is tiresome. i love kick out jams as much as anyone, but i dont want it to be every one of their songs, i couldve done without all the dragged out endings in favor of playing more songs. i mean, godspeed you guitar wolf, i hope you fuckers play until you are in your 70s, but come on. every time i look over i wish it was billy standing there, and i imagine its the same for toru and seji. i am a longtime fan of the band and i mean all this in the best possible way, and i wasnt there, and i appreciate the streaming and being able to see it at all of course, but i am just calling it like i see it. i loved everything through their last record with billy and i was totally excited when i heard they found a replacement and were going to continue, but as i watched the youtube videos of their new songs i was less and less interested. i guess what i am trying to say is that as cool as it is to see them still up there doing it, it is also a painful reminder of how great they once were, i used to look forward to hearing new songs but now i am only excited to hear the old ones. whatever, we are all changing, growing and time keeps on going, i feel bad for passing judgment on a band i have loved for so long, who knows, maybe (probably) i am wrong. i have mixed feelings to say the least. i wasnt looking for a billy clone and the new guy does have lots of youthful enthusiasm, but it just doesnt feel like the right fit to me. shit i guess, keep it going forever if thats what they want to do, more power to them. here's hoping next time i see or hear from them they knock me the fuck out, figuratively that is. cheers goner, and sorry for the rant.
