Also, where's the South?

It's funny, no one in the south has ever offered us enough dough (unless you are 20 years old or so) , which equals 50 bucks... Also, I know if we played in New Orleans there will probably be 35 people there at the most, which doesn't pay ANYONE'S bills! later tater

I'd wait to see what the lineup is elsewhere in town that night. Last year (although appearances are decidedly less rare) Mudhoney's show there was only about half full. No problems at all getting in without a wristband. No line at all. I think someone like the Black Lips were playing somewhere else at the same time.

Peg, are there any plans for more European dates in the next year or so? I caught the UK show last year and it was great, and now I'm considering coming alllll the way out for the Cleveland gig in November (Dedication, right). I don't wanna make that trip if you'll be playing this side of the Aatlantic again somewhat soon though.
Posted: Jul 4, 2010 1:08 pm

There's a possibility that we'll play Barreiro Rocks Featival in Portugal Nov 13th, but it's not confirmed. Don't have anything for 2011, but that could change, too. Hope that helps!
Posted: Jul 6, 2010 8:19 pm

Cheers, if that comes off I'll head to Portugal. If not, I might win the prize for longest journey ever taken for a Gories show. What do I win!?

So are the Gories playing Austin?

For the last month or so the "tours" section of the ITR site has Austin listed under Gories/Haunted George dates. It looks like a goof, tho (to the right of all the other dates, no when/where....just "Austin, TX"). So I emailed & got this reply (assuming from Larry?):

The Gories will be playing in Austin but, unfortunately, Haunted George isn't on that bill.

Emailed again for more info & got zip.

I talked to Dan this morning, and he gave away no clues "I'll tell you all about it later"

Last I heard they were stuck in a traffic snarl because the highway was closed for several hours when "a pick up truck full of illegal cigarettes was involved in an accident after being involved in a high speed chase with Ontario Provincial Police" (link) Hopefully, they scored some smokes along the way.

Apparently her flight to Ottawa got cancelled, or something like that, so Bloodshoot Bill sat in on drums. She showed up 5 minutes after the set ended. I saw pictures from the Toronto show last night and Peg was there, so all is well.

Bloodshot rules!
Posted: Jul 18, 2010 9:26 pm

that soundman did not.

(he had every band that utilized a bass drum sound metal)
Posted: Jul 19, 2010 8:11 am

With exception of the drum mics falling off at the beginning of the Gories set, I found the sound infinitely better in Montreal than Toronto...Lee's Palace in TO tends to pin the guitars up into the stratosphere and you end up with a distorted, harshed-out mix.
The layout of the MTL club kind of felt friendlier, too....
"Baby Say Unh" is still a personal fave!
Posted: Jul 19, 2010 9:48 am

A matter of taste, I suppose, but I quite enjoyed Lee's distorted, harshed-out mix - heavy, sexy and wild.
Posted: Jul 19, 2010 7:35 pm

the sound was pretty good at the club, i just have issues with the way most drum kits are mic'd at big clubs like that. the bass drum was way too loud and overpowered the rest of the bands. it was mic'd like a metal show (heavy bass)...
Posted: Jul 19, 2010 9:54 pm

if I'm not mistaken....the Gories don't have a bass drum....

friday night... less the view from here, there but for the grace of god go i, dancing like mad, and across-the-room-eying the most exciting man in my universe 5 years running (a gories fan, of course)... someone should have just shot me stroke of 4 am.

but they didn't, and the saturday crawl to lincoln center... the gories at Lincoln Center? is it weird to feel pride for a band? between that and watching ? at 60+ years of age enthrall in sexy, shiny pants and a fringed, spangled shawl...

unbelievable.

peg, you guys are amazing. thank you for bringing this into our lives. danny made reference to being hated in your day. well, as gandhi said, "First they ignore you. Then they laugh at you. Then they fight you. Then you win."

So I didn't bother buying a wristband to clusterfuckNW. So I will have to stand in line for a ticket to tonight's show at Dante's.
I'm torn about how early to show up, since the Mummies saw folks lining up around 5pm. However, I remember showing up early to see Roky Erickson when he played this fest a few years back, and being one of about 30 music nerds standing in an empty venue for 4 hours.
Anyone else going tonight to buy at the door? What's your guess on a good time to get there?
Posted: Sep 10, 2010 3:55 pm

Who the hell knows, but this is totally different from the Mummies show in that tix were sold out ahead of time and they weren't playing anywhere else in the country, so that was pretty much the only option. This won't be the case tonight as no tickets have been sold and, as you can see in this thread, that the bands involved are playing all the major centers on the West Coast.

The only unknown appears to be the number of wristband holders that might show up and when. I imagine that most people who have bought wristbands for this thing are more interested in the Decemberists, the National, etc. and would rather be wandering around the different venues instead of camping out for a few hours with no music. I could be wrong. The Roky scenario you described sounds like a possibility. Last year, we pretty much walked right into the Mudhoney, Zeros show after a bit of pre-gig worry. Probably a bit more demand tonight though. We'll see.

We had no problem getting into the show in Portland- got there a bit on the early side and every band was fucking amazing and so worth the hanging around waiting time. One of the best shows in a long damn time.
