Goner Message Board / ???? / worst southern accents in film or tv ever
Posted: Jan 26, 2010 4:05 pm

I'm watching the Comcast Channel 1 On Demand adds roll, and there is this new Brad Pitt movie "Inglorius Baterds". I want to put that line about "Killin' Nat-zees" on my top list for worst southern accents in film or tv ever. Also Carroll O'Connor's accent in "In the Heat of the Night". Great actor, bad southern accent.

Pretty much all movies set in New Orleans have the worst accents. Whether they're trying to do the aristocratic old southern accent or the "n'awlins" cajun/creole/whatever accent, they always fuck it up royally.

^ case in point: True Blood

Absolutely agree about the Brad Pitt accent in that movie. I said something similar to someone awhile back. Actors tend to over do the accent making it sound fake to people from the south who know how the shits supposed to sound. It's annoying as a southerner to hear some high falutin' Holllywood type butchering our dialect by gawd. Then again I don't think it was supposed to be taken that seriously. Want someone who can speak southern in a movie then get a real southerner like Billy Bob Thorton. First Brad steals Billy Bob's old lady then tries to steal his accent. Wannabe!
I think Billy Bob would have been much more suited in that role with a more realistic sounding accent that isn't exaggerated to ridiculous proportions.

Bad, fake "dirty south" accents in Hustle and Flow ruined it for me! Stale as shit.

I second True Blood. good dumb fun show. terrible accents.

kevin costner, regardless of the movie.

"Killin' Nat-zees"

I read an interview with Tarantino where he said he wanted Pitts accent to be over the top like a C.O. from those older budget war movies.

What about John Travolta in Love Song for Bobby Long? Horrible New Orleans accent. Or any movie based on a Grisham novel.

All Hollywood movies are terrible, and I honestly don't know why you people watch them.I have an idea, but it wouldn't be polite to say.

Barak Hussein Obama sounds alot like Tony Clifton, and I think it's on purpose.
Listen to him the next time he's making a speech off the teleprompter.
That guy is halarious!!!
Thanks Barry.

There was a great thread a long time ago that pitted the Cohen bro's Fargo vs. O Brother Where Art Thou. I think it ended up Northerners loved the southern one, and Southerners loved the northern one and their respective regional films provided too much of an exaggerated charicature of the gentry by poorly acted stereotype.

this new Brad Pitt movie "Inglorius Baterds". I want to put that line about "Killin' Nat-zees" on my top list for worst southern accents in film or tv ever.

That accent in those commercials is pretty much what kept me from seeing "Inglorious Basterds" in the theater. But then I saw it on DVD and really enjoyed it. His accent was totally ridiculous, but it didn't bug me as much as I thought it would.

yeah, Brad Pitt's accent wasn't supposed to be real. don't know why that worked, but it did.

The worst Irish accent in a film ever has to be Fred Astaire in Francis Ford Coppola's masterpiece, Finian's Rainbow. The 2nd worst Irish accent in a film ever has to be Petula Clark in Francis Ford Coppola's masterpiece, Finian's Rainbow. And we won't even mention the guy who plays the leprechaun in the same film.

The funny thing is that Brad Pitt is from Southern Missouri and had a mild Southern accent when he first started acting. A friend went to the same high school as Pitt and most people assume she is from the deep South.

I haven't heard anything close to an accurate NOLA regional accent in a movie or TV since Frank's Place.

it's high time to recognize an accent done brilliantly...

Yeah - the accent pretty much ruined Inglorious Basterds for me. I've been watching True Blood lately, and they're all glaringly terrible. Of course, I think several of the main cast members are from the UK, Australia, etc, but still...

they said WORST, not funniest...real or fake the irish accent, along with their smug sincerity, annoys the fuck out of me.

Christian Bale's accent in the Public Enemies movie seemed a little strange. Then the guy who played J Edgar Hoover in that movie was doing an accent too. When the two of them talked in the movie I felt like I was listening to a conversation between two people with severe speech impediments.

I can't believe anyone takes Brad Pitt's accent in Basterd's to be anything other than what it so clearly is- a mockery of bad accents! It's Tarantino for god's sake, his movies are made up (almost entirely) of bits of other movies; in this case, goofy old fashioned war movies and Brad Pitt's accent in Snatch.
Posted: Jan 31, 2010 11:48 pm
