I was pretty stupid to never see him while he was playing across the street from me every Monday night for 20 years. A GIANT we will never see the likes of again. RIP.

Someone on Termbo just told me "No one would give a shit if his name wasn't on millions of guitars." This was after he said his playing sounds "awful" in the footage of him playing at the Iridium in the "Chasing Sound" documentary.

He invented so many things in music that people take for granted. Plus he was one of the greatest guitar players that ever lived. Not too shabby. (And from what I've heard he was a heck of a nice guy and remembered every guitar player he ever heard or met.)

someone should mention that among his most important contributions was multi-tracking, without which there would be no wavves.

I heard Les Paul showed Steve Miller how to play when Miller was a kid - they lived in the same neighborhood or something?? Or Les was a friend of the family.

Les is from the Milwaukee area, and Miller was in Madison for years (after being in FL, I think, and then moving on to "fame"). It was probably during his collegiate-type years.

According to Wikipedia,

"Paul was the godfather of rock guitarist Steve Miller of the Steve Miller Band, to whom Paul gave his first guitar lesson. The close family ties with Paul and the Millers were evident again, as Steve Miller's father served as the best man at Les Paul's wedding to Mary Ford."

Seen the Les Paul documentary on PBS last night. Knew most of the story already but was great to see and hear Les one last time. I gotta get some of those old records now. What a genius!

I like that doc, too. I didn't realize how many things he basically "invented" (beyond multi-tracking and guitar stuffs) in order to set up the American rnr explosion.
