Goner Message Board / ???? / Ampeg VT40 for sale
Posted: Aug 4, 2009 11:36 am

70's Ampeg combo - 4x10, all tube, loud and louder.
Nice gritty rock n' roller. As Marsh would say, "I really like your tone." He should know, I bought it offa him. Maybe I should wait until Overnight Lows record comes out and ebay it as a collectible. You simply cannot replicate the Marsh Magic.

Not in the best cosmetic shape (see: "Marsh Magic"), but some gearhead always comes up to me after shows with a "whoah! what's up with that amp?" And you don't have to worry if you spill a beer on it. It's a tank. A drunk tank. Giant all-terrain casters and semi-sparkly green grill cloth are among the many luxurious features.

$400. Personal delivery to Memphis, New Orleans, or anywhere not too far from Jackson, MS can be arranged.

i think it is..

louder than an AC30

they are louder. the vt 40 is pushing 60 watts and the ac30 is 30-40watts. can\\\'t recall, but is the vt-40 closed back like a bassman 4x10 or open like the ac30?
Posted: Aug 6, 2009 8:37 am

Got one just like it only blackface.

Open back. Served me well, but heavy.

I'll trade you a '72 (no master volume) Super Reverb for an AC30!

AC30 is class A wiring and will blow 60 watt AB wiring out of the water.

By the way, I'm not trying to talk anyone out of buying Wess' amp. Those things are awesome and loud. Just not as loud as an AC30. Eric wants to be louder than me, and it's not going to happen.

We just happen to have an AC30 at the practice space. I'll perform a scientific comparison with Bobby's earholes this weekend. We'll see which one bleeds first.

Selling it because I finally got that Gemini fixed. And I really only need one giant Ampeg.
Posted: Aug 6, 2009 11:07 am

I think the ampeg will be louder. The ac30s don't get louder past 6, just more mushy. the ampeg is a clean loud, like a twin.

Let the test begin!

I think the ampeg will be louder.

i second that. yeah, the ac30 has class A wiring, but not exactly a huge output transformer. don't they use el84s or 34s? what output tubes are in the vt40?
Posted: Aug 6, 2009 12:00 pm

EXACTLY what I wanted to hear.

If I don't buy it, Scott will have to.

Wess- have you had the tubes replaced? are they the originals or did you swap 'em out? supposedly the tubes are badass but rare... or not?
Posted: Aug 6, 2009 12:45 pm

tubes were replaced a couple years ago. the originals were long gone. i can't even remember what kind of tubes it uses now. i don't recall them being too hard to find.

oh, wait - here ya go:

Whoever buys this should play it WITH an AC30.. as in AT THE SAME TIME.

I'm currently using a Twin Reverb with the AC30 on top.

The ac30 is pushed real hard and the twin adds bass response and increased note definition.

Then.. if you hit a Clean boost pedal.. the added headroom of the twin pushes lead parts through the roof.

It's a bitch to set-up and to lug around to shows, but once you feel that wall of sound behind you... it all becomes worth it.

AMPS! HIGH-FIVE!

LIVE AT POMPEII!!

now you're making me want to keep this thing. ampeg assault!

The last Amp I had was a marshall half stack. AC30 is MUCH louder. It's the only amp I've every played that wasn't a Twin Reverb, sounded good, and could keep up with a Twin Reverb.
Posted: Aug 6, 2009 2:15 pm

Wess. Definitely keep and bi-amp the Ampegs. Nobody wants to hear what Bobby's playing anyway.
What specific AC30 do you guys have access to? The new ones are shit.

what KIND of marshall 1/2 stack? plexi re-issue? 100 watt? one of those horrible mosfet abominations? i'll argue the ac30 could not have been louder.

1976 JTM 45. Sure, it was 50 watts, but it had a huge output transformer and 4 12s. It got loud. AC 30 is louder. A lot. I don't know why you think I'm lying about it.

New One. It's it's issues.. but it sounds pretty awesome.

AC30 is not louder than Marshall JCM 800 half stack which is what I played through. I blew up the Toe Rag AC 30 that all the Billy Childish records were recorded on. AC 30=Skiffle amp. Not for Americans (except Bruce Bennett).

Marshall JCM 800 half stack

Yeah, those sound awesome.

Marshall JCM 800 half stack
Any series of Marshall after the 800 is complete shite.

just roll your eyes really hard at the screen

Oh, I was!
Posted: Aug 7, 2009 11:10 am

Roll your eyes all you want, JCM 800s are awesome. AC30s are too.
Don't let your Ned hatin' color your opinion. Open back combos are louder than closed back cabs unless your are in the direct line of fire about 20 feet away from a 4 12".

Loud does not equal better.

Loud does not equal better.

True. Loudness was the topic that started the debate. AC30 also sounds unbelievably beautiful.

JCM 800s are awesome.

Untrue, and I hated them long before I knew Ned played one...which was yesterday. Growing up hating hair metal bands on MTV with walls of Marshall stacks behind them, I though they all sucked. It took me a long time to get from hating Marshalls to loving the RIGHT Marshall. The old 50 Watt Leads and Plexis are some of the greatest amps ever. Pretty much everything else sucks. If you wanna sound like CC DeVille, get a JCM 800. CC's loud as fuck!

I hate Scott.

Kerry King uses the 800s (his signature model is a 800 reissue). 'Nuff said.
Posted: Aug 7, 2009 7:34 pm

haha i don't think scott will be swayed much by kerry king

thats true but to be fair the jcm is a good amp. consider that cc deville and that one dude from ratt and that other dude played horrible kramers, yahmahas, etc (neck pick ups only w/ a floyd rose) and ran through those thin pre-amp/effects processors. can't blame all that shit on the amp. the amp just made the horrible sound LOUDER.
Posted: Aug 7, 2009 8:34 pm

I think JCM800' s are pretty versatile. I don't know that they're the best amp Marshall made but it's easy to find one and they come down in price often.

played horrible kramers, yahmahas, etc (neck pick ups only w/ a floyd rose) and ran through those thin pre-amp/effects processors.

Yeah, shitty taste can't be fixed with a better amp. No matter how hard you try, you just can't polish a turd.
I also think that running these heads through the obligatory 4X12 slant cab doesn't always get the right sound. I'm using a Sovtek MIG100H (pretty much exact copy of an 800) through a 2X12 cab and loving it.

I hate Scott.

Because I'm right.

Turns out the Vox at our practice space was only an AC15. So I could not simulate Scott in laboratory setting. BUT the VT40 cranked to 3/4 did make Bobby shriek in pain instantly. He was in the other room, too.

Took some pix:
http://s41.photobucket.com/albums/e291/westle/Ampeg%20VT40/

You will notice the handle is kind of flapping in the breeze. I have the hardware, I just need to screw it back on. This is LIMITED EDITION DAMAGE - inflicted by Harlan T. Bobo loading out of a Deathray show. 1 of 1.

Also, the reverb doesn't really work. Or maybe it's just very subtle. Maybe even subliminal.

Everybody is swayed by Kerry king whether they like it or not.

I have the poor man's 800, the Sovtek MIG 60. Gets the job done.

Davey jones from the Hickoids ( and the reformed Dicks) has that same amp, he's been rocking it since the 80's. Davey and his amp do not suck.
