It's pretty fucking great. It's got "Drill" on it, and Jack sings like he hasn't reached puberty yet.

"HOW MANY OF YOU LIKE WAAAAAAAAARRM SCHLITZ??????"
Posted: May 29, 2009 12:04 pm

holy shit!

I think i worked the door for this show....
I was running the strobe light and fog machine!!
TRIPPY!

OK, so I wasn't, I was at home likely listening to Nirvana and Dr. Dre, sue me!
Posted: May 29, 2009 12:11 pm

If it's as funny as the Atlanta live record then we are in for a treat!!!
Posted: May 29, 2009 12:17 pm

not as funny. "HOW MANY OF YOU LIKE WAAAAAAAAARRM SCHLITZ??????" is pretty much the only good banter... some "unusual" covers were performed, however. and sounds like a sasquatch ripping your guts out. not bad.
Posted: May 29, 2009 12:26 pm

not as funny.

sounds like a sasquatch ripping your guts out.

i was gonna say, if it's on itr, it should be meeting these criteria.

"Keep screaming, you'll be on the record."
Posted: May 29, 2009 8:19 pm

YES
Posted: May 30, 2009 9:05 am

Oblivians stage banter is some of the best.

"I'll tell you what the problem is. we've run out of beer onstage!"
Posted: Jun 16, 2009 8:30 am

Just heard this last night. If i was at this show, i certainly don't remember any of this. Better than atlanta. Best oblivians record i ever heard hands down. ...nice doll rods cover! ha-ha...

The sound quality is INSANE!
Posted: Jun 16, 2009 11:50 am

not as funny...
"Chris, could you get me a coca-cola, please?"

Does have the story on "Drill", Re: Art Pepper's book. If the Oblivians weren't getting back together and putting stuff out, this would be a cover in any band I'm in.

some "unusual" covers were performed, however. and sounds like a sasquatch ripping your guts out. not bad.
The Mexican morracca dude shows up in "Strong Come On".
Posted: Jun 16, 2009 11:53 am

wow. i just saw the cover. sketchy!
Posted: Jun 16, 2009 2:26 pm

sketchy!
ha! ha!

i can't believe how absolutely crazy awesome the guitars sound on this thing...i've never heard anything that rediculous before....
Posted: Jun 16, 2009 8:05 pm

i know! they didn't have the common decency to turn my fucking guitar down! Sorry dudes!

"we got cliff notes up here"??!!!!!
Posted: Jun 16, 2009 9:24 pm

Who recorded this masterpiece?
And were the Doll Rods playing this show too?
Posted: Jun 16, 2009 9:35 pm | Edited by: Jack Stands

Eric knows his name, I think. It was Chris Walker's friend, who used to record shows a long time ago at Barristers and Last Place On Earth with an 8 track 1/2 machine. That guy got a couple of other great shows, too, including Impala and some early Adios Gringo.

Don't think Doll Rods played, but I'm guessing Copout was supposed to play...
Posted: Jun 16, 2009 9:39 pm

ahhhh! I think i broke my foot at this show ....!
Posted: Jun 16, 2009 9:47 pm

From what I can tell, Oblivians and Copout were supposed to play a show the next night, as well.
8/5/95 is the date of this show, I'm pretty sure.
Posted: Jun 16, 2009 9:51 pm

hmmm....tough call... that era is a bit of a blur to me these days....

it's such an amazing recording. Why hasn't this come out earlier???!!!!! WOW!
Posted: Jun 16, 2009 9:51 pm

And INCREDIBLE performance as well!
Posted: Jun 16, 2009 10:10 pm

i know! they didn't have the common decency to turn my fucking guitar down!

but at least they put it through the autotune
Posted: Jun 16, 2009 10:27 pm

i don't know about that...

"uh...eric needs to tune a string...chris can i get a coke?" 4 mins later, no eric...band plays whole song w/out eric... eric then jumps back in and it sounds EXACTLY THE SAME!!! ha-ha...which is incredible...

I thought Eric's guitar sounds fantastic...should be turned UP if anything!

Again..funnest record i've heard in YEARS!

When's the release??!!

I promise i won't give anymore about it away guys.......again, wow!

where's that Brad X produced Blivians live DVD too?

i never got any feedback on that at all, actually.

here's the story: i sent 5 copies to a guy who contacted me from memphis claiming to be making a documentary. he offered to drop them off to the band members for me.

now that i think about it, i'm not actually sure they ever actually received them.

i have made multiple copies for friends, we just watched it two nights ago in fact.

Goner Rhea has some of the best Oblivians footage i've ever seen.
Shot in in black and white night vision so you can see everyting.
It's awesome!

Where is that stuff Miss Rhea?

Shot by Miss Rhea in Chicago herself...and it's awesome!

the amount of time i put into the thing was ridiculous. sitting around with piles of vhs tapes, going through them one at a time and taking notes on everything - how the sound was, how good the video was, how the performance was. i converted the best 60 or so songs to digital, and then had to weed out the best versions of certain songs, and decide on an order. finally, i designed the disc image, menus, added title music, and authored the disc. it took months, but i ended up with something i have been able to watch over and over and enjoy time and time again.
Posted: Jun 17, 2009 1:12 am

please license this to GONER so they can release it and then we can see it Mister X.

If it's good...

whambulance?

i aint crying, i dont care if anyone ever sees it or not. i did my part years ago, i was the first person to upload their videos to youtube, and talked to eric and jack about the dvd i was working on during my honeymoon over 4 years ago. before youtube even existed i was on soulseek sharing mpegs of oblivians vids i ripped.

since youtube banned my last account i decided to re upload some oblivians shit.

i never sold a single copy of the dvd. i assumed the band members got their copies and thats where it ended in my mind. the layout is pretty generic, even by 2004 standards, so its not really a commercial product as-is.

my main purpose was to make sure the band members had a decent copy of the video footage that was widespread enough to have made it to my doorstep, and to give myself a dvd to watch all the time. i succeeded on both counts, so theres no crying here.

All of this was recorded for the "Live at Barristers" CD that C.W. put out. I remember that the Adios Gringo recording sounded like shit. Perhaps he was unprepared for their volume. That might could be fixed by the Rocket Sci. experts.
There's a loooong story about how the 4 Johns recording went, but it's only funny to me and only in retrospect. As for anyone wondering why the 4 Johns were recorded at all, I think we were considered the Barristers house band at the time.
Oblivians show that should have been recorded was when the place got raided and Jack told everyone to tip me well for the hassle. Then they dedicated "Blew My Cool" to the bartender (Me!). And people did tip well. Oblivians fans were the best. Generous tippers, fun, and rowdy.
Sorry for the busted toilet, ladies.

maybe i'll drop by cucumberland for awhile and we can jam it out, brah.
Posted: Jun 17, 2009 2:21 pm

I think Chris' brother recorded it, maybe with Steve Moller's help... 8 track recording. The mix on that Down In The Alley (or whatever it was called) compilation was so bad we didn't really think it was worth putting out... then we heard what Robin had... and their mix made it sound great. There's some tape dirt/distortion on there, and we trimmed a couple of songs off the tape, but maybe not my 4 minute non-tune-up action...

it'll be available on tour, people. Grab it while you can.

I did a check a few nights back they're the same. Gotta say I like it better on record, but the CD was great in the truck for a few weeks ago.
Posted: Jul 1, 2009 10:43 pm

Its totally the best oblivians record i've ever heard.
Robin, mine might be before the mix....as there are no song id's on it. It's just song one for all the songs and is only the first side of the record...but it's definetly not mixed like that...either way it's fucking fantastic!!!!

Told ya you were gonna love this Joe!
Posted: Jul 1, 2009 10:52 pm

Just compared both. I am right. There are no drums on the right channel and greg's voice and guitar are in the right. Eric's guitar/drums and vox are in the left. Sounds killer!!

When's your dj night in hburg joe?

You need to e-mail me, man.
I don't know what you have or where you got it, but, there were three mixes (that I know of; the original tapes sat around for a loooooong time, until we borrowed Jay's machine).
mix 1: whatever got put out on the compilation years ago.
mix 2: mix straight from tape I did last year (was only about 25 or so minutes long)
mix 3: mix Kyle did, and I gave him some direction (this is what the LP became, and -to me - the best mix).

fuck the tech talk, it's a really good record. Sorry, Rich, youtube mix doesn't do it justice.

are hey ma and mystery girl covers?
Mystery Girl is a Cartwright original, its on the Compulsive Gamblers LP, "Bluff City" (1999)
here:

here is thee original of "Hey Ma"
Posted: Jul 9, 2009 4:21 am

um, not the original of "hey ma," but a worthy view nonetheless.

"hey ma, look at sis" is an uncle ben cover, he used to play on beale st at handy park before they walled it in. it's a highwater single. don't know if it has come out on anything else.

Hey Ma, look at sis
In the backyard, doing the twist

!!!!!!

"mystery girl" was an oblivians song, we just never recorded it. maybe we'll play it on tour... we've played just about everything else. "the drill" is almost getting good!

"oblivia" is still beyond us, though...
Posted: Jul 9, 2009 7:55 am

"oblivia" is still beyond us, though...

Is that about a girl named Oblivia? Like the Ramones had that song called "Ramona"?

"mystery girl" was an oblivians song

when i saw that on the back yesterday, i got confused! One of my favorite Gamblers (Oblivians, i guess!) songs!

official OOBA GOOBA review (yeah, i wrote 15 reviews today... this shit will be out soon!)

Oblivians "Barristers Ninety Five" (In The Red)

This is the Oblivians at their live, absolute brain shattering best. Mostly cover songs on this record, but any song the O's cover, they OWN. Hysterical version of "We're The Doll Rods" (who covers another band's theme song?) and of course the heart stopping cover of The Monks "Oh How To Do Now" to start things off on this one with more crunch than dry cereal. Best inbetween stage banter moment is the prophetic "keep screaming, you'll be on the record!" Who woulda thunk 14 years later... 1,500 copies (all on gorgeous blue marbled wax?) sold only through the In The Red website and by the band themselves on their European reunion tour this summer. NASTY! I just hope that in another 14 years we get another live LP from now , but with more original Oblivians songs.

Anyone else's warped? Pretty much first song on each side warbley like you wouldn't believe. Super echo-ey -- not warped enough to jump & skip but cloudy as fuck. Ordered through the website.

Okay, BJ. Now your take on the new Reigning Sound. I just heard it, and I'm kinda sure you've heard it too by now, and I can't wait to read your review.

um, not the original of "hey ma," but a worthy view nonetheless.
"hey ma, look at sis" is an uncle ben cover, he used to play on beale st at handy park before they walled it in. it's a highwater single. don't know if it has come out on anything else.

i had never found it on vinyl ; on that -great- CD comp only
http://www.amazon.com/Deep-South-Blues/dp/B000QR0CIM
way better than the Hank Ballard's version
