Goner Message Board / ???? / San Francisco / Bay Area comics/graphics novel bookstores?
Posted: Mar 26, 2009 11:30 am

I am looking for a store that primarily sells comics/graphic novels/zines. Ideally like Quimby's in Chicago, but in the Bay Area. Anyone know of any?

I can look this up online, but sometimes you get there and it's a superhero/D&D environment where the sales clerk won't even make eye contact with you because you are a female. Or else it is a store that specializes in creepy anime or hentai. No, thanks!

Any suggestions?

there's that or four block stretch of valencia street once you pass the police station - modern times for one, then is it dog eared books(?) and then then that sci-fi bookstore. also, on the upper haight there's that anarchist bookshop, bound together (don't know the cross street, but it's the first block when you start hitting all the shops). i haven't lived in sf for about 3 or 4 years, so there could be more or less of them at this point...

i think there's also a shop at the cartoon art museum at 655 mission st. in the soma district.

I can’t think of any that quite fit your description above, but you should totally check out Needles and Pens in the Mission. It’s more of a record/zine/gallery/ DIY store, but it’s awesome.

Also maybe Isotope - on Fell at Gough? Al's Comics on Market? Other than good book stores that carry that kind of stuff, those are the places that come to mind. I'm not a collector so I can't speak to the selection or service at these joints.

Needles and Pens is one of the best shops I have been to here! They don't have many books though, just zines and handmade items.

I'll try Al's and the cartoon museum, I had that in the back of my mind somewhere.

Thanks!

I dunno much about comics in the Bay area, but if you're interested in other printed materials, you should pay a visit to De Lauer's Newstand in Oakland

Check out Oakland's Chinatown while you're at it.

I dunno about comics but if you want the best pulp and graphic novels shop you've ever seen in your life it's called Kayo books and it's not in the hipster mission district. It's at 814 Post street in San Francisco near Chinatown. Their website is kayobooks.com. It's mostly vintage stuff but they also have a good selection of music and film books, too.

When I lived in Oakland I tried to make it to Comic Relief at least once a month. It was on University then, but they moved around the corner to Shattuck. I've been to most of the comic shops in Northern California and Comic Relief is likely the best for what seek ye. I even got a Doofus (Rick Altergott) shirt there once.

In SF, I like Comix Experience on Divisadero. Bonus points for the guy that works there who looks like he plays in Type O Negative.

The staff in both shops is very friendly and helpful.

And Kayo Books is one of the best bookstores of its kind anywhere. Famously loved by the likes of John Waters and Richard Price. Drinks at the Owl Tree afterwards.

tet68 - The Magazine on Larkin is your one stop shop for vintage magazines of all shapes and varieties. I especially like the "7ts" swinger zines and the boxes of "erotic" and "non-erotic" found photos.

And Little Saigon a mere two blocks south...
