Ooga Boogas- Romance and Adventure

my most wanted current lp.
Posted: Dec 9, 2008 10:07 am

I just got it the other day. Has some of my favorite songs on it.

Honorable mention for most played: Blank Dogs - Diana the Herald.
I know, it came out in 2007. Absolutely hate them, but I must have listened to it a million times trying to figure it out what the fuck he was thinking. I even got influenced by accident, and created n00 Dewdz.

Like I said before-possibly the worst year for new music ever.

Nice to see my hard earned tax dollars going to a good cause. Taking the day off from looking for work?
Posted: Dec 9, 2008 10:11 am

It's awesome.
Thanks, harelip.
Posted: Dec 9, 2008 10:13 am

Yeah, kick your feet up and spin another record, man. I'll take care of your family for you with my hard earned tax dollars. Don't sweat it.
Posted: Dec 9, 2008 10:15 am

Exactly what I'm doing. Blaying some bass, too. With your money.
It's amazing someone so short can make my day so great.
Thanks, dude!
Posted: Dec 9, 2008 10:18 am

No problem. Every day when I'm hard at work I think isn't it a great country where Robin can sit home all day goofing off while the rest of us get up, go out and contribute to society. You oughta look into that welfare too. Could probably get a Cadillac out of it.
Posted: Dec 9, 2008 10:20 am

Might just do that. I hear they have a sale at "It's All Good" motors on third.
Work a little harder, shorty. I could use some new strings.

No one cares. Buy the new Gringo.
Posted: Dec 9, 2008 10:44 am

It must be great to be so carefree. Like Tinker Bell. I on the other hand have to work hard to support not only my own family but millions of other freeloaders like Robin who are too lazy in the middle of one of the greatest economic crisis's in our nation's history to go out and get a job like me. Everybody wants a handout. I'm sure Goner Records must be hiring. They seem like they're doing really well. Eric doesn't even need to sell records to the only chain store in NYC. Woohoo!
Posted: Dec 9, 2008 10:45 am

send me one and i'll review it. word is born.
Posted: Dec 9, 2008 10:49 am

This economic crisi has been fantastic. Really enjoying it. Thanks to Harelip for living in TN. His taxes are like gold. Playing Bass all day! Thank God, I'm saving rock n' roll, unlike that that stupid dupe!

Mr. Plymouth Rock can tell you. (The haydens landed 6 years later, by the way; can't trust a damn thing that man says).

The new CoCoComa album comes out next year, Ned... have faith!

Bill-when you're trying to figure out why your great record didn't go anywhere you might tell your record label to return their emails. Just a suggestion. (Doesn't anybody in Tennesee work?) Also, big mistake releasing the first one at the end of last year. Woulda been record of the year.
Posted: Dec 9, 2008 11:26 am

my list would include:

Eddy Current Supression Ring - Primary Colours (far & away the best release of the year)
King Tuff - Was Dead (just buy it.)
Dutchess & the Duke - She's the Dutchess... (heartbreakingly brilliant)
Thee Oh Sees - Masters Bedroom… (this LP SLAYS)
Ty Segall - s/t (late breaker - awesome OMB... totally twists & turns in interesting directions)
Okmoniks - Party Fever! - (gets no love in the shadow of the Nobunny lp - but personally I think this is better)
Turpentine Brothers - s/t (it almost doesn't even sound like the same band from the 1st lp - great shit & totally underrated)

I'm sure there's more I'm forgetting...

(Doesn't anybody in Tennesee work?)

eric address this issue in the oblivs austin '97 vid.

i ain't got no job. i'ts kinda hard to find one in a town with a population of under 5,000....and when you don't bother looking for one.

hey gayman, i already applied for 5 jobs in the area and inquired about two more yesterday (weren't hiring mexicans apparently), so up your nose with a rubber hose!

Dutchess & the Duke - She's the Dutchess... (heartbreakingly brilliant)

i love this album. reservoir park is great.

Eddy Current Supression Ring - Primary Colours (far & away the best release of the year)

you are correct on that one for sure. i love listening to it loud as i can crank it and it's probably got the most play of any record in my collection this year. easily.

Turpentine Brothers - s/t

i picked up this album and only have listened to it once since i got it. not because i didn't like it though. it is a lot different than what i expected though. i probably should give it another listen or two.

Doesn't anybody in Tennesee work?)

no. we all live on welfare and buy records and beer with your tax money. :P

i lost my rand macnally; too many shit-for-brains white people in H Burg?
Posted: Dec 9, 2008 12:43 pm

The Okmoniks are as good a live band as I saw all year, but their record doesn't have the songs-to-push like Nobunny! Nobunny songs pop into my head all the time, Okmoniks do not.

I made a list somewhere else. Nodzzz LP is good, even has some great songs, but is not as good as I hoped. I'm bored with jazz/jam/psych stuff like Los Llamarada, can't get into that one...
Posted: Dec 9, 2008 12:51 pm

there is so much horrible shit that gets hyped just like that los llesbians band.

the nodzzz album is great. their songs keep popping in my head way too much. ooga boogas is amazing. ecsr of course. new black time is excellent. this new hunches is pretty decent. new human eye rules. gentleman jessie blows. pierced arrows album is killer. black and whites is good. tv ghost, no. that fell off radar pretty quick, didnt it? thomas functions celebration album! and i still like the cheap time album too. thats my take bitches.

OH! and Black Time's 'Double Negative' is great too!

i played the ecsr at least 3 times over the weekend.

the new hankiv is quite killer, also, though i haven't completely warmed up to it.

is Fabienne DelSol's "Between You & Me" from this year?

is it? is it? screw it, i'll count it.
Posted: Dec 9, 2008 2:14 pm

Dutchess & the Duke LP was the strongest thing I heard all year. I really wanted to like the Black Time LP, but after several spins, nothing doing. Cheap Time LP was good. Still need to hear the King Tuff, which I'm sure I'll dig.

Year of the Reissue: Nixe, Rats, Animals & Men, Cold Sun, Knots, Clean, JT IV -- and that's just the last quarter of '08.
Posted: Dec 9, 2008 2:31 pm

Dutchess & the Duke LP was the strongest thing I heard all year.

the only other album i can think of that i want at all. i know it's great based on the couple songs i heard.

Weird Is Psych With A Drum Machine

"Weird" in 2008 wasn't weird at all. Pompously "anonymous," non-threatening, thoroughly disposable, dated in the worst way possible -- yes. Weird or abnormal or bizarre or etc., no.

I can't wait until punk is good again.

Bill! Get into town Monday, Dec. 22 around 9 p.m., leaving the next day, then will be back to spend the night the following Saturday. I think we're staying with Ana. Send your number so we can meet up while I'm in town. O-bombs at Jake's?

Who put out Eddy Current Supression Ring? Whoever it is doesn't have any records in any stores in NYC and no distributers appear to carry this product.
Posted: Dec 9, 2008 3:14 pm

Academy in Brooklyn had it. Might still.
Posted: Dec 9, 2008 3:15 pm

I can't wait until punk is good again.

You didn't like the Wax Museums LP? Lots of great punk 7"s this year, Nodzzz, Catatonic Youth, Wizzard Sleeve/Amber Alerts, etc. I think you just don't wanna like anything!
Posted: Dec 9, 2008 3:18 pm

Academy in Brooklyn

I said NYC, Tourist.

I like Blank Dogs. It's all the shit that came after it that I hate.

so who else was pompously anonymous?
Posted: Dec 9, 2008 3:31 pm

Pompously anonymous: All the other bad one-man MySpace bands. Zola Jesus, Nice Face, etc. I don't understand the point of it all. Was anyone ever clamoring to discover the identities of these folks? Remember when everyone made fun of bad power-pop MySpace bands? Kinda funny how a lot of those folks pulled 180s and started buying pretentious horseshit that grew outta the same exact medium.

I like the Wax Museums and the Nodzzz. Are the Nodzzz PUNK???
Posted: Dec 9, 2008 3:33 pm

I said NYC, Tourist.

Check the one in Manhattan, suburbanite.
Posted: Dec 9, 2008 3:34 pm

I said NYC

New York City is composed of five boroughs, an unusual form of government.[70] Each borough is coextensive with a respective county of New York State as shown below. Throughout the boroughs there are hundreds of distinct neighborhoods, many with a definable history and character to call their own. If the boroughs were each independent cities, four of the boroughs (Brooklyn, Queens, Manhattan, and the Bronx) would be among the ten most populous cities in the United States.

Are the Nodzzz PUNK???

Yeah, I don't get that either. It's minimalist pop scraped to the bone. Catchy! I like it though. Songs appear in my head constantly thoughout the day. I agree... I can't wait until I'm blow away by another punk band. Wax Museums LP is good but not in that 'holy fucking shit!' sorta way. The Catatonic Youth songs on their space rule! Wish I could get their 7 inch. Haven't heard the Amber Alerts.
Posted: Dec 9, 2008 3:52 pm

Since I know shit about Catatonic Youth, besides that they rule. Who the fuck are they? Who is the dude who sings for them? Is this even them?
Posted: Dec 9, 2008 3:56 pm

oh shit, nevermind, i shoulda read the video notes.
Posted: Dec 9, 2008 4:17 pm

They're another "mystery band." But they're really good.

Posted: Dec 9, 2008 6:40 pm

oh man..he was "Memphis' Coolest!" no doubt!
Posted: Dec 11, 2008 1:25 pm

I like that Catatonic Youth record. It caught me off guard. It doesn't sound like the other mystery bands I've heard at all. Just catchy punk with some cool production.

I personally can't think of a more overrated 'band' of 2008 than Blank Dogs.

That Wax Museums LP is the most solid record I've heard this year. It might not be intense or mind blowing or anything, but they're not that kinda' band. It's a consistently good record with a few songs that really stand out though.

I think that Dutchess & The Duke record has some good songwriting & I can recognize that it's well done, but I gotta admit it doesn't really grab me.
Posted: Dec 11, 2008 2:44 pm

Nobunny songs pop into my head all the time, Okmoniks do not.

which is sort of funny since both albums have one common song

I'm Done and Teenage Timebomb are pretty sweet too

Yeah, and the Okmoniks are sparklingly original...wait, "Hey, I'm OK" is "Zodiac"! Now stop making me rip on a good band. I just don't think the album is very exciting, it's not bad, it's just there.

Posted: Dec 12, 2008 9:49 am

Dutchess and the Duke is great, but I wish there was a bit more drums.
One song sounds just like Crimson & Clover, another sounds like a slow version of 'Hang on Sloopy.

I like both of those songs!
It's good.

works best as a dj record. the right song at the right tme at a party sounds really good. i like the one with the "here comes the bride" riff the best.

I prefer "ripped off"... and they are hardly ALL ripped off, and there is nary a song that is a complete rip off cept perhaps the opening track.... just saying.

Here's mine:

Stuff already mentioned--
Nobunny-Love visions (my favorite of the year)
Gentlemen Jesse
Dutchess and the Duke
Eddy Current Suppression Ring
Brimstone Howl-We came in peace
Goodnight Loving

Stuff not mentioned yet that I dig:
Dirtbombs-We have you surrounded (Am I the only one who likes this?--how is it left off of all lists?)
Digger and the Pussycats-Let's go to the hospital (I love--in my top 4 or 5 of the year)
Livefastdie-By the time these flowers die (it's the country side of their new record and is funny, raw and catchy as hell)

My favorite single of the year is probably Fucked on Ketamine by the Demons Claw

Dirtbombs "ever lovin man" and Brimstone Howl "hopeless destroyer" are great fuckin songs, too.
Posted: Dec 17, 2008 10:38 am

Dirtbombs-We have you surrounded (Am I the only one who likes this?--how is it left off of all lists?)

The record sucks! "Wreck My Flow" besides being the worst titled song of the year sounds identical to "We didn't start the fire" start a new band already!
Posted: Dec 17, 2008 11:28 am

ECSR - Primary
NOBUNNY - love Visions
Thomas Function S/T
Chronic Seizure - Ancient Wound
Cheap Time S/T
Cave/California raison split 10"
Wax Museums
Human Eye - Frangments
Ooga Booga's - Romance
Billy Bao

Records I would normally nominate had I not had something to do with their release.
Terrible Two's S/T

Disclaimer - As always, I haven't heard as much as I still want to hear from this year. The Blank Dogs record that came out on woodist recently sounded good at my pals but I only got to hear the first couple songs and haven't been able to aquire it yet nor have I gotten the Diana the herald record but I wanna hear it.

not to mention getting around to listening to.

My wife might be into the punishment-handing out, too. I like how you get all chivalric and defend your woman's honor. She must know you're a real keeper.

It took me a minute to figure out what Glass Houses referred to. Looks like we're all BJ fans at heart (pun intended).

Some of these releases weren't lps but nonetheless...

Tyvek- Anything that's been released this year that I happen to own.
LFD/Camero Werewolf- Shit Amplified.
Johnny and the Limelites- Anything that's been released this year that I happen to own.
Mika Miko (Sub-Pop avaricious singles' club) Black Flag cover, plus the chicks on the jacket look ratty enough to cut the mustard.
The Rebel- Northern Rocks Bear Weird Vegetables.
Guinea Worms- Anthing that's been released this year that I happen to own.
Harrisburg Players- (Columbus Discount Records avaricious singles' club) YEAH!
Menthols- 848 7". Even a possibly homo d.j. I fucking broke down and played it for dug it.

... all off the top of my head. I'm sure there's other shit that I'm forgetting, nor do I have the attention span to read the other responses(by like minded individuals/ chickenshit conformists) in this thread to spark my memory.

A whole new realm...
MUSIC THAT I HAVE HEARD FOR THE FIRST TIME, BUT WASN'T RELEASED THIS YEAR...

Rolling Stones- Satanic Majesties Request
Cpt. Beefheart- Everything that I've purchased this year. Batting 1000.
