Goner Message Board / ???? / Favorite Instrumental Bands?
Posted: Oct 27, 2008 9:14 am

I'm talking about instrumentals that are so good they don't even NEED words to fill out a song or convey a feeling.

Number one has got to be Booker T. and the MGs. Those guys were so good at what they did, and were so good at playing together that it sounds like four friends just having a conversation. MUSICIANSHIP!

The Meters are also great in this respect. I only have one album, Look-Ka Py Py (what the fuck is THAT all about anyways??), but I have been playing it nonstop.

Davie Allan & the Arrows are another great one that have a ton of really awesome instros that go way beyond all "surf" cliches.

WHAT ELSE?

Great stuff.....and simply beyond what has been said already:

Freddie King's "Just Pickin" is truly one of my favorite all time records.
That great JB's instro double disc thing too...
"Pipin' Hot" by King Curtis!
I have 3 Sandy Bull records that are amazing. Bluegrass is an instrumental power entity in itself...

Just scratching the surface...
