it's official, everyone and their brother...

Usually it's "everyone and their dog" with me, but my dog is trying to stay out of the bars this month.

don't they have enough brothers there already?

I can recommend an excellent doctor in Detroit.
Posted: Jun 4, 2009 3:32 pm

Would someone who lives in Memphis and is familiar with any Artisan staff recommend that they add extra chlorine to the pool during this weekend?

Mullett!! I need to buy you a beer in Detroit.

see ebay & craig's list.

and on a related note, there's no way i'm staying at the artisan after seeing those reviews online. and i'm a pretty low-maintainence traveler.

haha, i read some of those reviews too.
my favorite was, "don't stay here if you feel like living".

and someone hook valery up!
Posted: Jun 8, 2009 1:19 pm

i read some of those reviews too

I was always really put off too, but I stayed there the last time I was in Memphis and the Artisan was actually OK, a little run down, but not as bad those reviews make out.
Posted: Jun 8, 2009 1:20 pm

those reviews are brutal! maybe it's slipping... yikes!
Posted: Jun 8, 2009 1:32 pm

Artisan was actually OK
It would be ok, depsite shittiness, if it wasnt 133 a night. At that price, it is not ok.
Posted: Jun 8, 2009 1:47 pm

(FYI - got a room at the Peabody for less than the Artisan quoted me, through hotwire)
Posted: Jun 8, 2009 2:22 pm

Artisan is 133? YIKES.

last time i believe they were around 70, or cheaper with HI TONE discount?
Posted: Jun 8, 2009 2:28 pm

i thought it was around 50
Posted: Jun 8, 2009 2:59 pm

I booked for $99, but that was a few months ago.
Posted: Jun 8, 2009 3:08 pm

Just called to confirm, that was $89, actually.
Posted: Jun 8, 2009 3:24 pm

Artisan was $60 when I came up that Paul Collins show a couple months ago. Wonder if they hiked up prices once they realized demand was on for this weekend.
Posted: Jun 8, 2009 3:44 pm

Well, cripes. Artisan website sez they're all booked up for June 20. Orbitz has Artisan rooms for $125. Ouch. The Artisan isn't horrible when you can get a room for $60. But I'd be pissed if I had to pay over $100 to stay there. Hard to top the convenient location, though.

Anybody know anything about that Gen X Inn?

You mean demand for this?:

if you still need a room, i booked this past weekend at the red roof-downtown, by the highway exit for $67.49 a night.
i've stayed there with others before for gonerfest and other music weekends, and it's decent.
nothing fancy, but it was clean.
has a pool.
and it's a short car ride/cheap taxi ride to the clubs.
Posted: Jun 8, 2009 5:36 pm

what tim said, red roof inn and motel 6 are across Union Ave from each other, not far but a hike if you're walking.

Hotel GenX is new, plasma tvs in the rooms, not cheap I don't think. Not as close as Artisan, but nicer I would imagine.
Posted: Jun 9, 2009 7:27 am

Hey uh, what about hotels in Detroit? What's cheap/close to the venue/not in the ghetto?

Apologies if this question has already been asked, this thread is getting really long!
Posted: Jun 9, 2009 8:11 am

GenX was $80 a night when I booked it last week via hotels.com.
Posted: Jun 9, 2009 9:41 am

what about hotels in Detroit? What's cheap/close to the venue/not in the ghetto?

Ain't nothin' cheap. The closest probably is the Holiday Inn Express on Washington. Hotels.com had the Ren Center for $130.

I don't know enough about Woodward to say it's the ghetto, but you don't have to stray too far from the Magic Stick to find some rough lookin' neighborhoods with burned out & boarded up windows. Even with the NCAA hoops tourney, the Red Wings, & the Tigers in 1st place, Detroit's not have an easy go of things right now, you know.

I just saw something that said $108 for the Holiday Inn Express on Washington. There's a map on this that isn't too bad, either. Walking distance to Greektown. Get up the next day & go order souvlaki, spanakopita, or mousaka just 'cause it's fun to say!

I stayed at the Gen X for Gonerfest 4, it's new and clean and was in and around 100$ price range. Stayed at the Artisan for Gonerfest 5 because it had really cheap Goner rates, it's ok , it's an older 3 star hotel but if you're high maintenance or very picky about cleanliness stay elsewhere.
The RedRoof was home for other Gonerfests and never a problem at all.
Posted: Jun 9, 2009 9:10 pm

i just made hotel reservations in memphis at king courts inn aka vista inn. it's in the beale street area.

75 bucks + tax/night with my AAA discount for 2 beds. lots of good reviews online.
Posted: Jun 9, 2009 11:40 pm

Really! all right!

Louie lived there for a couple of weeks, never wanted to leave...
Posted: Jun 10, 2009 2:24 am

I'm staying at Kings Court as well. We can split a cab to the show!
Posted: Jun 10, 2009 7:01 am

They must have really turned the Kings Court around.. stayed there ten years ago and thought I was gonna get crabs from the bedsheets or worse. place was crawling with hookers and gangstas.

also it was like $30/night then. we quicky realized that the holiday inn up the street was a better deal even at twice the price.

and louie!

I went from the reviews on the trip adviser website... I think it changed hands a couple of years ago by the sounds of things.
Posted: Jun 10, 2009 7:40 pm

yeah - i'll split a cab with you. no problem. i'll be traveling with a buddy, so that makes 3 (at least).

Getting on my flight soon.

Australia -> LA - Memphis -> HiTone -> Beer
Posted: Jun 16, 2009 10:25 am

I just canceled reservations for 2 rooms at the Artisan, so if anyone was wanting to stay there, call now. I'm pretty sure it was sold out prior to the cancellation.

(FYI - got a room at the Peabody for less than the Artisan quoted me, through hotwire)

Was it the 3 1/2 star hotel for $119/night? At the Gen X currently, but I'll get major good husband points for spending a few bucks more if there's a duck parade involved. I'm a bit wary of pulling the trigger on Hotwire unless I know it's going to be the Peabody...if there's no ducks, a not-in-the-area-of-the-HiTone hotel would stink.
Posted: Jun 16, 2009 10:27 am

we got that extra ticket that we needed - thanks Scott Rogers!

Posted: Jun 16, 2009 2:49 pm

in theory, yes, in reality ....
Posted: Jun 16, 2009 2:56 pm

honestly - is it going to be a problem to find a cab to take my drunk ass back to beale street after the show? i thought i remembered earlier posts saying i'd probably be ok if i called ahead.
Posted: Jun 16, 2009 4:01 pm

beale st shouldn't be a problem. Kevin's an Eastern Hotel pioneer!
Posted: Jun 16, 2009 4:20 pm

alright, lay it on me... what did i get myself into.. omg omg omg omg is one of us gonna have to stay sober and drive?
Posted: Jun 16, 2009 4:23 pm

and is the long drive down Poplar going to be like Judgement Night? I need to know what to pack.
Posted: Jun 16, 2009 4:24 pm

Might be wise.
Posted: Jun 16, 2009 4:30 pm

well, just got off the phone with the concierge, and she pretty much laughed at me, said she's never heard of anyone having difficulty finding a cab, especially coming from that part of town at that time of night. hmmm.
Posted: Jun 16, 2009 4:33 pm

obviously I take the word of Goners over the hotel concierge, my wife, family, common sense, etc so i'm conflicted..
Posted: Jun 16, 2009 5:13 pm

you'll be fine. getting a cab to the hi tone is the hard part.
Posted: Jun 16, 2009 5:25 pm

i did a night @ red roof inn on camilla (at union and 240) this week and it was remarkably clean considering the traffic this place must get. for some reason, doubles are cheaper than singles...
Posted: Jun 16, 2009 5:58 pm

Worst case scenario, Kevin, I don't live too incredibly far from there.
If you can get a ride to the Hi-Tone, I could drive you back.
You'll just have:
Stay a little later
Ride with no spedometer
Only one window rolls down very well
Not complain that I empty my ashtray by making hard left turns
Not complain about the cigarette butts on your shoes

I'm sure I'll think of other things.

I had this idea like 4 gonerfests ago.

if anyone knows anything about renting such a thing, I wanna hear about it.

renting one? can't goner afford to buy one yet?
Posted: Jun 16, 2009 8:08 pm

i feel so fucking bad. WE ALL SHOULD BE RIDING IN STRETCH HUMMERS, YET ONLY JAY-Z CAN!

Just talk with an English accent and you'll get rides all over the place!
Posted: Jun 17, 2009 8:54 am

If only they didn't want so much money for this zebra-striped beauty.

My new plan is to go up to people asking if they've got any marmite until they offer me a ride.

Hey everybody, just so you know -

whatever you do, do not park at the Circle K, the apartments directly behind the bar, or the Memphis College Of Art. They bought up a bunch of property around here, so if there's a sign that says don't park there, just don't. They'll tow it without hesitation. You can park on Tucker, Buena Vista, Barksdale or the circle drive at the park.

I wonder if they'll play "Self-Indulgent Asshole"
ft. DJ Jack Oblivian!

As soon as I can figure out how to get the moving pictures off of this new li'l camera, I'll put some more up.

But, yeah. Awesome. Oblivians play 5 songs with Mr. Quintron.

And I still felt real good this morning. I think I immediatley sweated out each beer as I was drinking it. I bet the Hi Tone is very aromatic today.

Day show was great, too. Twinkle & The Bunnymen!

I want reports from the Artisan. Saw lots of thonged tranny pride when we drove by there last night.

I don't even know were to begin on The Artisan. I checked in Thursday afternoon, and the desk clerk told me that they was having a "Gay Pride" convention there. I made my reservation a good while back and didn't know about the "convention". But I thought well I need a place to crash,so I went on ahead and checked in. It was quite a scene the "rockers" and the gays but everybody got along. The gays were a rowdy bunch that's for sure, hotel got trashed. Beat all I have ever seen that's for sure. But I still had fun at the Gories/Oblivians shows. I wasn't going to let a "Gay pride" convention get in the way of Rock-N-Roll!!

I don't even know were to begin on The Artisan.

It was a pretty insane, non-stop parade but it was certainly great for laughs! Also made it real easy to meet people who were there for the show. I'd agree they were rowdy but they weren't beyond control. I had to shoo them away from in front of my room a few times and at one point had to commandeer the elevators to regain some control over my weekend but they really weren't too difficult to deal with. Pretty much just assume an authoritative voice and tell them what need to happen and I found they snapped into line pretty easily.

I don't even want to know what happened in those elevators on Friday night. It felt like the Folsom Street Fair / fuck fest had happened in there. It was G-R-O-S-S.

Shirtless e-freak

My wife had a run-in with this guy while taking a break late in the set and had a conversation that went like this:

him: "What kind of music is THIS?!?"

her: "Uh, rock and roll."

him: "Oh, cool. I am tripping my balls off!"

her: "Wow, I would have never figured that out if you hadn't told me."

Can't imagine E at an Oblivians show ever being a good idea; taking it that night in that club at that temperature seems like a trip to the Emergency Room just waiting to happen...

What a show in MAdrid. Spanish crowds are crazy, but more on that later. Oblivians opened and kicked ass. Best I've seen them. Greg "Showercap" Oblivian was on fire. I kind of wished they would have played "Love Killed My Brainb," but got an absolutely killer "Pill Popper." JAck was great too. "Clones" and "The leather" were particular highlights.

The Gories. Were great what I saw, which was half the set. Someone threw a bottle on the floor and I got thrown only it. It punctured through my shoe and into one of my toes. The club owners, who understood little English, were incredibly helpful and got me medical attention. I heard Ghost Rider from the bathroom.

Then, I got to spent 4 hours in a MAdrid Emergency room to get 3 stitches in my foot. Quite the rock n' roll holiday. I had fun!

BTW- If anyone who reads this is one of the people who helped me at El Sol, I am eternally grateful. The people of Spain are some of the nicest I have met. Except the people at the airport, but that might be universal!

Muchas Gracias!

FUCK! sorry to hear it, clif!

dan got a bottle to the face that night, too... blood all over his face, shirt... looked killer, and he's fine, but scary.

gories did "leaving here" last night! still haven't busted out "there but for the grace of god go i" but i heard it at soundcheck.

no "emergency" or "cannonball" yet on our side.

shows so far: shower cap, plastic bag, coke cup taped to head.

good times. great oldies.

VERA GRONINGEN 8 july 2009

OBLIVIANS are okay but after 60 minutes a little boring...
what i was missing by Obl. was a kind off connection by the 3 of them
the tension goes up and down just like in the old days.

GORIES where mean, ruthless it was excellent,
i not get often chicken-skin by live bands
GORIES was one of them

hope to see them in paradiso

last night's show from france!

Oh man those recordings are killer! Are songs 7 & 11 new Gories songs, or just covers I haven't heard them play before?
Posted: Jul 11, 2009 5:23 pm

yeah, they're both covers. they've been doing covers a lot during the tour (they covered the nautaloids in detroit!!!).

everything (that's mine) is from pebbles, or nuggets, i forget which...

leaving here has been covered by many bands, not sure who did the original..there's a great version by jimmy hanna on one of the twistin rumble lp's...
Posted: Jul 11, 2009 7:22 pm

I saw both bands at Vera (in Groningen), and although both bands were awesome, I think The Gories were a little bit more brutal.

Last night at Paradiso (in Amsterdam), both bands were great, I mean just GREAT, but there was a revenge of The Oblivians: they played a little better than The Gories, more with the hearth.

swimming pool PARADISO 11 July

you can not explain good music in words, i try.
SOUND was a little shitty because halve filled hall.

OBLIVIANS show was full of ENERGY,
it was like one ADRENALINE shot
GORIES were somewhere lost in the big paradiso space.

WARNING
go see and check them out on this tour
if you don't you will regret it the rest of your life

Shows are going great! Gories are on fire! Good to see everyone. Berlin will be a riot.

At yesterday's sjock festival it was no doubt Jack who was "the weakest link". Guess playing at 2o'clock pm isn't really his thing (especially when he played Amsterdam the night before). Wasn't bad though, too much (long) interruptions in between songs but such great songs, no mad lover though. New Bomb Turks and Untamed Youth were also great but The Gories knocked them all out... fucking awesome. Tonight : Diksmuide. Nice clubgig. Yeah.
Posted: Jul 13, 2009 8:26 am

well, playing at 2pm is not easy no matter what. oblivians did good, but everything that could go wrong did... i had to resort to my shit "metal" pedal, everyone broke strings, etc. it happens.

gories did great as always. mick almost split his pants with some upside down spread-leg guitar maneuver... wow. "train kept a rollin" SMOKED.

new bomb turks and turbonegro were fantastic. mace played with untamed youth! deke used my metal pedal, too! turbojugend not so good. rockabillies suck. got to meet euroboy and happy tom! YES!

afterparty was rockabilly boys dancing with each other to "woolly bully." egads.
Posted: Jul 13, 2009 9:08 am

rockabillies suck
RBDQ Nation!

The Gories knocked them all out
I'm getting jealous, even after seeing two arguably great Gories shows in Memphis.

Did Dan ever rendezvous with you guys?
Posted: Jul 14, 2009 8:06 am

4AD gig ruled : Battle of the bands. Nobody lost.
Both Gories & Oblivians were amazing : sold out club, special chemistry in the air, no ugly turbochicks just fans who knew the words to every song, great beer, great sound (it IS important), Oblivs : encores lasted longer than the set itself, Dan went unplugged during "you make it move" : and then the long drive home thinking this probably was the last time you saw these bands play, goddammit.

Didn't think too much of The Oblivians gig at the Sjock festival. I compare it to a miscast movie role because The Oblivians' music simply isn't made for huge open air stages. I had the impression that the band was thinking the same. The Gories were much more entertaining and thus more impressive. Untamed Youth were great too and New Bomb Turks totally nailed it. Especially Eric Davidson was impressive: his manic & funny ADHD-like behaviour was a real joy to watch and the set was awesome: every song from Destroy-oh-Boy!!! I also liked a couple of other bands at the SJOCK festival on Sunday like Deke Dickersion & The Ecco-fonics (big fun as usual), Domestic Bumblebees (Jerry Lee Lewis-like goddamn rock & roll) and James Intveld (superb americana).

Yesterday GORIES & OBLIVIANS played at the 4AD club and all I can say is that both bands were absolutely brilliant from start to finish! I was one of the lucky few to see The Gories at the time but yesterday they were even better with fantastic covers like Alan Vegas' Ghostrider & Train Kept A-Rolling. Danny is just one hell of an entertainer and Mick still kicks ass like nobody else. During Ghostrider, he almost molested his guitar! It would be very hard for The Oblivians to equal the Gories show but they were just unbelievable and probably the best time I've seen them (and I have seen them about 5 times at the time). Wild & Crazy Rock & roll, full of piss and vinegar. They played a different set than the day before and came back 2 times (although Eric hurt his foot while stepping off stage). As usual, the sound was absolutely brilliant at the 4ad club and I am pretty sure that this must have been one of the very best shows of this European tour. Oblivians + Gories = legends of our times!!!

The Gories were much more entertaining and thus more impressive.

I think the Oblivians sound can fill the "open air" WAAAAY more than The Gories.

Not following that idea of yours.

I saw both bands in Detroit, they both were great, no matter how much air was in the room!!
Posted: Jul 14, 2009 11:09 am

the mix was dreadful (the bass drum was way too loud)

not an idea, just reality!
Posted: Jul 14, 2009 11:38 am

How was the Blast Off fest? That looked like the stage was a bit of an air box as well.
Posted: Jul 14, 2009 11:47 am

The venue in Nottingham wasn't great, way too big and started off with terrible sound. But, if you were stood upfront the bands actually sounded pretty damn good. The Gories were amazing and the Oblivians were even better than they were in Paris. I wish it could have been in a way smaller club.
Posted: Jul 14, 2009 12:01 pm

The sound was awful for pretty much all of the bands I saw in Nottingham except the Oblivans, I thought. The Gories were great but I thought they suffered from the sound even up front. Someone told me they called off the soundcheck halfway through because it sounded so bad in the empty venue.

The Oblivians really cut through it though, they sounded great.

Sonic Dirt day show the next day was great fun too!
Posted: Jul 14, 2009 12:38 pm

Thanks for that. It tallies with the footage I saw which made it seem like you were standing in warehouse bathtub, looking through the doorway of the bathroom into a floodlight.
Posted: Jul 14, 2009 1:03 pm

I have seen GORIES / OBLIVIANS on Sunday at the Sjock Festival and yesterday in the 4AD club. GORIES were the revelation on Sunday, all three were playing with such a intense power and mood, that was unbelievable. OBLIVIANS had too much problems on stage, that's why they couldn't show their power. Sound was great at the Sjock Festival. Besides both bands, Southern Culture on the Skids, Untamed Youth and Deke Dickerson & the Eccofonics were great. Supersuckers / Turbonegro sucked.

Yesterday at the 4AD club, all two bands showed why you can count them to one of the best bands in the world. Dan from the GORIES said he never played with such a good sound system, he feeled like playing in a studio. Both bands played their best songs and it was funtastic to be part of the crowd. If you haven't been to the 4AD club in Diksmuide, you have to go there. One of the coolest clubs I have been to.

The Oblivians wrote a lot of great songs, but this isn't one of 'em. Thanks for upping the show, can't wait to give it a listen.

exactly, "live the life" isn't an Oblivians original. It's a gospel trad.
I have a version of Mahalia Jackson doing that song at least.
Oh, and the Oblivs cover is great as well.

Thanks for sharing MT.

NB. yeh i know live the life is no oblivians original ; neither is your happiness a gamblers original (nolan strong a the diablos) ;I only wrote which version the RS covered
"I don't need that kinda lovin'" has been recorded by sandie shaw too (don't know if she recorded it before or after adam faith) but the RS versions sounds more like faith's one

Fantastic show in hot Munich yesterday...

Magnetix opened and did an excellent job. The audience already was satisfied after the first band...

Oblivians started great until Greg broke some strings and got problems with the amp. They did their best to continue and ended up with a great final including EMERGENCY and two TRIO covers (sunday you need love AND Lady-O-Lady!!) with Greg using Jacks guitar...

The Gories proved to me and almost all people in the audience to be the best garage band in the world. After about 6 songs they did "there but for the grace of god go i" for the first time for this tour and everybody went nuts and started to dance until the end of the very sweaty show...

Hey, had a great time at Blast Off starting with the train trip up from London, where we had Los Chicos, Diego, Oihane, Iain, Ashley, etc! I agree that the sound was sucking in general at the venue, but the energy from the crowd and both bands more than made up for that, IMHO. Pics to come. Great to hug the necks of Greg, Eric and Jack!
Posted: Jul 18, 2009 4:00 pm

Münster was great, Berlin was awesome and Munich was a RIOT !!! I think Oblivians were best in Berlin but the Gories show in Munich was untoppable !!! Thanks to Jack, Greg, Eric and Dan for letting us take some pictures with them - those three days were a blast !!!!
