I never understood why Dire Straits are HUGE in Europe. Anyone?

I LOVED the olde stuff as a yute.

Then "Twistin' by the Pool" and similar offenses turned me off to their entire catalog.

Even later, multiple readings of ALL of Douglas Adams' books had me revisiting the oldies when their name was mentioned, so I like the olde stuff again. I even left "Twistin' by the Pool" on the radio once this summer, but I was still shaking my head saying "I don't get it."

Dire Straits are HUGE in Europe

I dunno, but if we hadn't bailed their sorry asses out in WWII, they'd still be goosestepping to "Auf Weirdeschen Adolf"

Knopfler had a lot more soul in his playing than most of his contemporaries ( late '70's/early '80's mainstream blues honkies).

Doesn't neccessarily make 'em good, though.

absolutely not

don't like but 2 of their songs.

i saw them when they first played at the roxy in LA (well, i worked there. captive audience, you could say) and they had a shit ton of STARS in the audience checking them out (like bob dylan and don henley - i'm talking stadium fillers). knopfler plays incredibly, though. too bad his songs don't do anything for me

Never cared that much for them till after a big fight with the husband he searched out and played "Romeo and Juliet". Guess that means I have a Dire Straits song I like and I'm glad he didn't put on "Love Song" by The Rollins Band.

"I want my Mtv" is the only usefull thing Sting has ever done.

Mark Knopfler is cool.

The reason Dire Straits are big in Europe is because they had midlength hair and wore headbands, in the age of hairsprayed metal mullets. That's the kind of thing Europeans respect.
