Goner Message Board / ???? / Haven't bought a fancy skateboard since the 80's
Posted: Aug 2, 2008 2:03 pm | Edited by: dale

...but I'm taking the 12 year old out to get him a nice one today. No more K-Mart and Target $20 specials. Wish me luck!
Posted: Aug 2, 2008 2:27 pm

last board i owned was the final powell peralta one, right around 1990.
Posted: Aug 2, 2008 2:37 pm

I've been thinking about putting longboard trucks and big 60+mm wheels on an "old skool" shape blank for cruising around the neighborhood. I can't do a trick to save my life, you see, but I don't own nearly enough Les Claypool bootlegs to be seen riding a longboard.

So really, I'm 27 years old, and tiny wheels and OLD BALLS just don't mix.
Posted: Aug 2, 2008 3:07 pm

I've been eye up those long boards myself. A couple "older" guys in town (though younger than me) have been swearing by 'em.

The skateshop was quick and painless. Element deck, Core trucks, Mini Logo wheels and Shorty's bearings. I was trying to sway the boy into my old preferences but I guess Gullwing, Spitfire, Powell and Birdhouse aren't as cool as they once were (at least with the 12 year old set).

Now I must assemble!

Gullwing

there still making these trucks?????

longboards=for hippies and fags. Just ride an old school. The only benefit to riding a longboard is that you don't ever have to worry about having kids.

when I was kid you could seriously get your ass beat if you showed up to the bro bowl ridin gullwings. gullwings are total faggotry! Indy or Thunder all the way!
Posted: Aug 2, 2008 9:42 pm

Ha...I used to skip school and ride the bro bowl all the time in the 80's...Hillsboro pool too.....lotsa people got jumped out there...but I don't think it was because of their trucks...
Posted: Aug 2, 2008 10:05 pm

shit. I probably know you. we used to call the hillsborough pool "the wall" cuz it was so gnarly. just to get to the tile was pretty hairy.

I never got jumped at the bowl but one day we went there and found a dude had hung himself at the playground behind it. he might have had gullwings.

after that it was backside grinds on that outer lip all day long.
Posted: Aug 2, 2008 10:32 pm

there is a SWEET skatepark around the corner from me in Lansing.
I can't skate - tried in high school, I was too stoned to really try though. I sucked.

Gullwings were sorta richie rich fag trucks. Light weight not made for grinding. Awesome for across town riding.

Found out today Independents trucks are for rich fags though.

Posted: Aug 3, 2008 11:53 am

you might know one of my best
Doesn't ring a bell...but I've been on injured reserve for awhile..

trackers
Crappy design...but their old bushings were the BEST, back when Indy's had those horrible red SNAP bushings...no break in period on the Tracker ones...been using 'em in my Indy's for years...

Posted: Aug 3, 2008 12:09 pm

Trackers don't turn.

Gullwings are gay.

...all the rest are just fake Indys and only allowed if you got 'em for free and can't afford Indys and don't have any sponsored friends to hit up for some Indys.

Let's go skating Matto!
Posted: Aug 3, 2008 12:21 pm

Serious!...my foot's feeling good....just in the middle of moving....records alone took my hungover ass all day yesterday....let's hit Glenhaven this week..

I just bought a pair a few months ago, yes they were $40.

The kid is wrong.
Posted: Aug 3, 2008 12:36 pm

The axles slip more than they used to...but they still turn better than anything else....and are 100% Hetero!

Posted: Aug 3, 2008 1:33 pm

I think I bought some indys a few years ago (like 2003?) for $25 on ebay
Posted: Aug 3, 2008 1:42 pm

Indy's are hands down the best truck, they turn and grind like no other. Spitfires are still the best wheels out there. Fast, rarely get flat spots and come in multiple durometers, shapes, colors. I skate all the time(and have been doing so for 30 years, I will be 37 in November) and these are the products that have proven themselves to be worth the money time and time again. Regardless of what some kid who has been skating for a couple of years might say.
Posted: Aug 3, 2008 2:06 pm

I think it's just their clique and preference. I was all about getting him some Indys BUT it isn't what is cool in their circle. Kinda like the great Ford vs. Chevy vs. Mopar debate that still rages on.
Posted: Aug 3, 2008 3:41 pm

horrible red SNAP bushingsi

i used to boil em!!haha! the fuckin salad days!and back in the day vegas in the summer was so hard on yer boards"make them mush" id stick my board in a freezer for a little while to keep sum pop!! i'm a stooopid!

Spitfires are still the best wheels out there. Fast, rarely get flat

hahahahahah! um yeah right! autobahn are really really good! but wheels are fuckin wheels whatever!it's all bouts yer bearings! SWISS NIGS!

Just more proof that kids today don't know shit.
Posted: Aug 3, 2008 4:05 pm

Posted: Aug 4, 2008 9:22 pm

Who made those trucks in the late 80s/early 90s with the steel insert in the hanger? I thought they were pretty gay cuz I only like wide ass trucks...but the sparking was cool!
Posted: Aug 4, 2008 9:31 pm

I'm thinking G&S maybe...
Posted: Aug 4, 2008 9:38 pm

Grind Kings? With the rounded hex head kingpin? Don't know about actual flint inserts in those tho...I prefer to get my sparks the old fashioned way...Pool Coping!
Posted: Aug 4, 2008 10:12 pm | Edited by: SSSSSSS

These puppies. Not the hardcore fireworks of flint like the GKs, but they totally sparked when grindin' concrete. I totally remember them now. Not steel inserts, but a tube of Cromoly in the hanger. My friend Troy used to ride 'em.
Posted: Aug 4, 2008 10:40 pm | Edited by: Mike Hawk

Steel trucks? Aw, hell no.

Those are even gayer than Gullwings.

Why grind when you can roll?

Why grind when you can roll?

I used to want a pair of those, envisioning 60ft grinds, no problem.
Posted: Aug 4, 2008 11:46 pm

I had a pair of Grind Kings on a board circa 1997, and I don't recall any sparks...probably 'cause I was a terrible, awful skateboarder who can still only roll around a bit between skin-removing crashes.

hey, where's a good place to get "old-school" blanks online? (or in pdx?)

I see a few "Moose" brand decks on ebay for real, real cheap but they're not exactly the shape I want. I'd like something wide like a pool deck but stretched out a bit-- not as much as a longboard but still a good wheelbase for carving. Anyone?

If you wanna buy local, I'd probably head down to Rebel Skates on Sandy. I really got the hots for the Rebel One deck. It's number 5 on this page.

I ain't ridden one, but like the shape and dimensions... well, actually I wish the tail was a little wider. I'm a slim hips, wide tail freak, not whale tail, but ya know... G&S Chris Miller face model had my favorite shape from mid-board back!

I loved this one circa '91.
Posted: Aug 5, 2008 11:03 pm

I rode one of those I think...but god DAMN was that a terrible time for equipment...I remember I was living across the street from Stone Edge in Daytona at the time, and these 55mm..53...even in the 40's would come in...and I'd be lookin at those, then looking at the chunked up, over-vert lip of the Peanut...and just shake my head...I dropped in on a kids once and almost fell over the nose of the board they were so slow.....those weren't the days...

Palm Springs '91ish

but god DAMN was that a terrible time for equipment

60mm wheels were still cool in '91. The 40mm bearing covers didn't come around till a few years later.

It was Rocco and Carnie, they're to blame for that nonsense.
Posted: Aug 6, 2008 3:00 am | Edited by: frankenspline

yeah, tiny wheels came about with raver pants. Jnco brand jeans and 40mm wheels are inseparable in my memory. shit, 52 was big when I tried to take up skating again in the late 90s.
Posted: Aug 6, 2008 8:53 am

think it musta been bout 92-3, cuz I started seein them just before i moved to NC....I remember Chet even riding some pinner shit when we got up there, back when he had just gotten sponsored by Dogtown..still killed it tho...somehow..

I stole a Powel Peralta in 1990 and painted over it .
Skaters are fags that can't play guitar.
It's funny how they used to try to fit themselves into rock-n-roll culture without playing an F-chord.
I've often seen good skaters playing terribly on guitar.

I hate skate rock, and hippie skaters that think they know how to play guitar.

I AM a better Guitar player than ALL OFF YOUS

Easy!!!!!!!!!!!!

Every person on this board!!!!!!!!!!
Memphis people( I'm a big fan ) included!
There is NO doubt in my mind!

First skateboard I ever had was a red see-thru Nash. Neighbor across the street gave it to me when I was eight and learned to ride on it.

Once was using it on the driveway when I fell off and it shot out from under. Went straight into the street just as a car was passing by. The car's back tire ran over it, skateboard bowed and then flexed right back to its shape. Tire tread was barely visible on the deck. Indestructible thing it was.

Surfing is one thing I've never had a chance to do. Hopefully, one of these days.

Found a Peralta Powell deck with Indie trucks (and wiped out Slimball wheels) at a garage sale today for 5 bucks. The kid just scoffed...Oh well, looks like I got a new board to reacquaint myself with. Wonder how long it will take for me to break a serious bone or two.

Digging out the skimboard tomorrow morning (the ECSR video inspired me). Gonna take them Itailians to the beach tomorrow and maybe teach them some lessons.
