All-Time Best Band: Big Star
All-Time Best Solo Artist: Aretha Franklin
Best New Act: Jay Reatard

how does Aretha Franklin qualify as a Tennessee artist?

To win this category for a given state, you had to be born there. If it’s good enough for your passport, it’s good enough for us.

she got famous in Detroit fer chrissakes! c'mon Memphis... someone born in TN has got to be better as an all-time solo artist than aretha. i got nothing against her but i doubt she's THE best solo artist born in TN... was Johnny Cash born in TN? What about the Carter Family???

i only checked like, 5 states before the ADD started to kick in, but it seemed a bit objective anyhow. you really need to have a VERY OPEN mind to name the best bands of america. i have a hard enough time with this question: "so what kind of music do you like?"

i hate that god damned question.

Seeing as how "most" of the "All-Time Best Bands" picked for each state are bands from the last 10-15 years, I smell aging hipsters getting paid to scratch their heads. The current bands seemed to be picked by the most myspace profile views. Four Seasons vs Misfits is the most entertaining thing about this turd.

Jerry Lee Lewis is from Louisiana, and I'm pretty sure Howlin' Wolf is from Arkansas. Other than that, you forgot the Soggy Bottom Boys.

i'm just thinking again of that list of Miss Music: here we are debating whether pagans are better than the mirrors (they are, so stop) about my beloved buckeye bombasatics and the SECOND tiered mississipi list has my fave soul singer (ruffin), two of my fave producers (parks, dixon), one of my fave songwriters (reed), 3 of my fave guitarists (magic sam, Otis, hound dog), and my second fave harpist (rice miller).

and tommy johnson and jessie mae are two of the most moving artists i have ever listened to.

amazing, but so are these moby grape and bobby fuller 4 box sets i am listening to all day
Posted: Jul 10, 2008 12:25 pm

willie brown, bukka white and furry lewis also come to mind. and my favorite pianist, otis spann.

and i'm pretty sure miss fred mcdowell was actually from TN or AR.

in the right mood, i'll take the mirrors, but more often than not, the pagans trump.
Posted: Jul 10, 2008 12:46 pm

Just checked out D.C. to see that Fugazi was picked over Bad Brains as the best band of all time. That has to be the biggest fuck up on this entire map. Bar none.
Posted: Jul 10, 2008 12:47 pm

And in Michigan the best new act going is the Human Eye.
Posted: Jul 10, 2008 2:22 pm

I'm not a huge fan or anything, but how is the best solo artist of all time from MS not Elvis?

Elvis wins hands down for sheer body of work and fame, but could there have been an Elvis without Robert Johnson? Maybe that's the reasoning. Plus, it's hip to hate on the King.

It's kind of sad they had to reach back to the 1930s for Mississippi's best all-time band. We may have invented the blues here, but we certainly haven't kept up the standard over the years.
Posted: Jul 10, 2008 2:38 pm

miss fred mcdowell was actually from TN or AR.

Tenn; my mistake; probably thought if he called himself Tennessee Fred, Brad would call him Nigger Fred

Otis Spann is a monster talent; bukka is OK but there's some great Furry stuff, vintage style

the only willie brown i know is Raider HOF CB, with Jack Tatum

man could those guys fucking play...

Elvis wins hands down for sheer body of work and fame,

no argument; i actually love a lot of his other things: soundtracks, early 60's b sides; his C and W styled gospel

but for me wolf is the primary wolf and although this is all debatable of course if you are talking about a person's direct influence on music (james brown, dylan, louis, Bird) then lester young, wc handy, and robert johnson were as influential as elvis, if not more so

future blues is a great song, but he mostly accompanied Son House, Robert Johnson and drank.
