the turntable i got to do vinyl to digital has a jack that you can plug a tape deck into as well, it comes with the software that you need

Audacity works too

1/8" jack works fine, and audacity is free.

"Use it to archive your old cassette tapes of 80s hair bands"

What a true waste of time.

its their newest way to get rid of backstock of old tape deck car stereos from the looks of the thing.

bruce, is the brand of your turntable ION? I got one of those as a gift a couple of years ago and never opend it. i'm low tech.

On that Audacity business, can you mix down directly to it with a 4-track?
Posted: Jun 20, 2008 4:20 pm
yep, it's super easy just plug it in and upload the disc that is in the box

1/8" jack works fine

Disclaimer: You need to be sure your "line in" to your pc is stereo.

should be. my computers from 1998 and its got a stereo line in. make sure you plug it into the line in and not the mic jack and it should be fine. and yeah, audacity is pretty much hit record and thats about it as i remember.

Just sayin'. Before I got a different soundcard, my line in would only record the left side.

that sucks.

I have used Audacity to record shit off my 4-track (and "master" it).

I've also used it as a digital multitracker, though I don't think I've tried to record more than two tracks at once.

This just changed my life.

so when you say master to audacity are you talking about actively mixing down to it? Like pans and what not?
Posted: Jun 20, 2008 5:35 pm
and how would you know if the line in on the pc is stereo?
Posted: Jun 20, 2008 6:16 pm
try it, and see.

actually, just record to the program and look if the left and right channels are different, listen via headphones, all that jazz.

my laptop had a shitty mono in jack -- most of 'em do.

I had to buy an "external sound card" made by Edirol that went from RCA plugs to a USB connection. sounded great digitally once I got that together with some tweaking software for hissssss reduction

obviously works good for records, too. just go out of the "tape out" jacks on the stereo amp, that way you can use the controls on the amp to tweak as well as your software if necessary

i didn't realize there was a 1/8" input on the stereo, but james if you have problems with that there is a stereo input on the ion

yes, you can pan left / right in audacity.

I think I'vd had a project with six simultaneous tracks before, all panned differently.
