I guess this answers the question what kind of a loser reads Spin!

I bet Bazooka Joe has already paid for his Matador singles in advance.
Posted: Feb 14, 2008 4:02 pm

i haven't paid for a jay record since your so lewd. i ain't gonna start now.
Posted: Feb 14, 2008 4:05 pm

oh wait, not true... i bought the goner clear live lp and raped some faggot on the price. PARTY!
Posted: Feb 14, 2008 4:09 pm

i've already purchased 3 pairs of energie jeans as modeled by jay reatard in the pages of spin for fun and profit
Posted: Feb 14, 2008 4:09 pm

So, it's safe to say Jay has completely jumped the shark at this point?
Posted: Feb 14, 2008 4:12 pm

woah, you just made a fonzie reference. Ayyyyy!
Posted: Feb 14, 2008 4:12 pm

SIT ON IT!
Posted: Feb 14, 2008 4:14 pm

i thought he jumped the shark right after teenage hate. the later stuff is all good, but nothing compares to the 1st lp, single, and the stuff posthumously released from that era. i have yet to hear anything from him i entirely dislike.

i wouldnt buy a copy of spin regardless of who was in it. most music writing is boring as shit anyways, and band interviews even moreso.
Posted: Feb 14, 2008 4:14 pm

The Fonz is a lot cooler than Jay Retard. He was never in Spin.
Posted: Feb 14, 2008 4:34 pm

Well, I'm gonna root for the home team.
Alarm Clocks suck.
Posted: Feb 14, 2008 4:40 pm

how good can a band about waking up unexpectedly be?
Posted: Feb 14, 2008 4:49 pm

the home team

Matador?
Posted: Feb 14, 2008 4:49 pm

I say rock on Jay.
Posted: Feb 14, 2008 4:50 pm

You're not helping his case, Goliedown.
Posted: Feb 14, 2008 5:38 pm

sold a clear live LP this week, only got 60 bucks for it...sheesh...was hopin for more...

man, i havent seen an issue of Spin in 10 years...just perusing the digital copy made me realize why...good lord there are a shit ton of crap bands in that rag.
Posted: Feb 14, 2008 7:01 pm

I have a clear live LP. The cover was damaged in a car accident I got into after the Blackout show. Does that increase or decrease the value?
Posted: Feb 14, 2008 7:05 pm

i have the first reatards single in near mint condition. whats that worth?
have an orignal teenage hate LP too, has the value of that goe up or down since the reissue?
id never sell either, im just curious...
Posted: Feb 14, 2008 8:24 pm

whats that worth?
bout 100
Posted: Feb 14, 2008 11:00 pm

I have a $5 bill Jay gave me.
What's that worth?
Posted: Feb 15, 2008 12:03 am

bout 100
Posted: Feb 15, 2008 12:05 am

Someone was just talking to me about this last night but i didn't believe 'em cause i didn't see it here first.

Fuck it. I hope their checks don't bounce. I have a feeling that King Khan & BBQ are next. And then... maybe... King Louie?!?!? Hope so!

"Jay reatrd"

Typo or deliberatly missing "a" ? I actually don't care!
Posted: Feb 15, 2008 12:46 am

how can SPIN make money when they put the zine in digital form on the web for free?

(not that I care, just curious)
Posted: Feb 15, 2008 2:33 am

Um, advertising.
Posted: Feb 15, 2008 7:48 am

I thought the Reatards name was a clever reference to the Beatles.

There can be only one explanation for Jay's recent successes: it's gotta be those shoes.
Posted: Feb 15, 2008 11:22 am

it's gotta be those shoes.

HEE-HAW!!!
Posted: Feb 15, 2008 11:38 am

Dig the shoes, but the coat could've been a little more ghetto fab for my money.
Posted: Feb 15, 2008 12:53 pm

I thought the Reatards name was a clever reference to the Beatles.
either way i still laugh when i think about it
Posted: Feb 18, 2008 7:01 am

i just think that too much touring is the way to get big.. see the black lips and jay reatard. both lots of touring (and hype on forums)
Posted: Feb 18, 2008 7:55 am

i just think that too much touring is the way to get big.. see the black lips and jay reatard. both lots of touring (and hype on forums)

It also helps that both of these examples are heads above others in terms of both live and studio work.

Songwriting.
Posted: Feb 18, 2008 11:44 am

Blowjobs
Posted: Feb 18, 2008 12:08 pm

it's true they are great but there are other great bands around that don't get big (or don't want), so that's the reason why i say too much touring. obviously both bands are among the best of the garage punk sound
Posted: Feb 18, 2008 12:16 pm

Exactly, touring all the time is the valid point. These two are favorites of mine, but it isn't just that they can write good songs, it's that they're out on the road a lot and are quotable enough for mainstream press.
Posted: Feb 18, 2008 3:26 pm

They're all still in their 20s too. That's a good demo. Youth seels to the young. You'll never see my old ass in Spin no matter how succesful i get (and that's OK by me).

I also think the Internet is good for exposure as well. I get bummed out thinking about how The Net's spurred on the growth of ready-made "microgenres". But i also think it's great that people take it more seriously than MTV and The Radio combined these days. It's about as close to grass-roots we get in this hyper-corporate lockdown society we live in.
Posted: Feb 18, 2008 9:50 pm

i think black lips studio stuff pretty much sucks. i love the live in tijuana and robs house records though, as well as their first recordings on the slovenly single.

retards were great, other reatard projects dont do much for me. the newer reatards stuff isnt as good as the old, but bedroom disasters and not fucked enough made up for that, and then some. glad to hear that good old shit with the classic sound and lineup finally surface.
Posted: Feb 18, 2008 9:53 pm

i think black lips studio stuff pretty much sucks.

oh, brother...
Posted: Feb 18, 2008 9:56 pm

well, i was really talking about the forest spirit lp, havent heard the others recently. i still prefer the tijuana one to all others.
Posted: Feb 18, 2008 10:26 pm

Forest Spirit does blow
Posted: Feb 18, 2008 10:52 pm

you ain't got no business saying what sucks!
Posted: Feb 18, 2008 11:06 pm

Actually... I do.

And all I'm saying.. is when I bought that LP I was like "meh".
Posted: Feb 18, 2008 11:06 pm

There was still enough there for me to by S/T though.
Posted: Feb 18, 2008 11:08 pm

the songs on forest spirit are great, some are my favorites, but its just so poorly recorded that even live versions are superior.
Posted: Feb 18, 2008 11:09 pm

"Youth seels to the young."

Dammit! I meant "youth SELLS to the young"! Throw fish at your earliest convenience.

There was still enough there for me to by S/T though.

but not enough there for you to want to sound different from the cult.
Posted: Feb 18, 2008 11:11 pm

so poorly recorded

yeah, it's kinda muddy. let it bloom has some banging sound though, don't know what your complaint about that one could be.
Posted: Feb 18, 2008 11:11 pm

Totally. Some of which are recitfied on the live LP (that's not really sooo live). MIA is a prime example.
Posted: Feb 18, 2008 11:11 pm

i also wish they would stop playing katrina. the live version was great, the studio one sucks. kind of worn out on that song other than the live version.
Posted: Feb 18, 2008 11:12 pm

but not enough there for you to want to sound different from the cult.

Exactly!

stranger is another example.
Posted: Feb 18, 2008 11:15 pm

Alex and Co as well as the Nathaniel Mayer crew (minus Nate) went to see them play in Vegas last week for some gay Vice party. It was at a disco in the Hard Rock hotel.

They were bummed to be playing to say the least.

Second song in... Katrina... Cole pulls out his dick and starts wacking away at the guitar.

Nothing new.

Yet, security forces them to stop playing... albeit politely.

Awesome!

Ian: "That's one thoasand a song!"

stranger is another example.

a fine one.
Posted: Feb 18, 2008 11:20 pm

Not saying anything that hasn't been said before... but "Punk Slime" is like a little slice of heaven.
Posted: Feb 19, 2008 12:14 am

i recently got what i assume to be a bootleg of them in the mail as a promo for my podcast

heres a picture i took of it

Posted: Feb 19, 2008 12:18 am

whatever it is though, it sure doesnt sound like them.
Posted: Feb 19, 2008 7:31 am

Sailor Jerry is fucking deaf, too - that's their best record. The newest one is their worst one. Deaf.
Posted: Feb 19, 2008 8:18 am

Who said anything about the new record?
Posted: Feb 19, 2008 8:51 am

both acts are moving into "housewife friendly territory"
even though the wifies likes to get their asses spanked hard

not nearly as funny funny as the cramps one, as this one could very easily exist.

word. if the second one was recorded like the third one, there'd be no arguing the point.
Posted: Feb 19, 2008 10:23 am

Rich, it seems that this Sailor Jerry character is more enamored with their dicks and impending fame that their music. Over here we call folks like that fags, in Australia it's probably something goofier in the Brit mode, not sure, but I would appreciate a list of your favorites. Their studio albums rate this way - 2, 3, 1, 4. The first three I love, the new one's OK but pretty lifeless, and I mostly blame the production.
Posted: Feb 19, 2008 10:42 am

i disagree, i go: 2, 3, 4, 1. i am a fan and defender of their fourth album. i heard the cd a few times but got the lp (different mix? my stereo is shithouse) and the production is fine with me. the songs overcome the lack of spastication. maybe that says something about my age now that i value songs over production and possibly over delivery too. does that make me a fag?
Posted: Feb 19, 2008 10:46 am

dont worry, everybody loves a cocksucker
Posted: Feb 19, 2008 10:56 am

Songs might be better on 4 than 1, I agree, at least in terms of consistancy, but the production & performance just kills it for me. 2 & 3 have both songs and production.
Posted: Feb 19, 2008 11:14 am

i like the new album. i like stuff. party!
Posted: Feb 19, 2008 11:27 am

You like the new album the best?
Posted: Feb 19, 2008 11:33 am

i don't rank them
Posted: Feb 19, 2008 12:01 pm

if I was to rank stuff I'd go 0, 999, 666, x, 13, 69, 2, 111, 56, 138, 7, 4, 98, 14, 35, 63, 72, x/y, 27, 23, 88, 103, 66, 101, 333, 555
Posted: Feb 19, 2008 12:26 pm

i think mark beef is right, but i like #4 the least.
Posted: Feb 19, 2008 12:37 pm

Let it Bloom is my fave. Cuz I'm a fag.
Posted: Feb 19, 2008 8:11 pm

but I would appreciate a list of your favorites

whoops todd i forgot: scene monkey, chickenhead, turkey, prawn, clown, fuck knuckle, et al
Posted: Feb 19, 2008 8:12 pm

we get a lotta mileage outta fag(s) too
Posted: Feb 20, 2008 6:10 am

I like prawn the best, if I were to have an opinion on that sort of thing, but since we're nonhuman here, I'll just have to say that I like them all equally! Party!
Posted: Feb 21, 2008 7:21 am

those red/blue shoes Jay is sporting give me the creeps..
Posted: Feb 22, 2008 9:56 am

geeked out!!!!
Posted: Feb 22, 2008 10:36 am

those shoes are somethin' else live.
Posted: Feb 22, 2008 10:40 am

Eric!!! Call me please!!!!
Posted: Feb 24, 2008 7:42 pm

Jay's new stuff destroys the Reatards. I like the Reatards fine. I don't own anything anymore, but nickg pushed Grown Up, Fucked Up on me years ago now and I'd break it out here and there, the new stuff though, that shit is pop classics. New stuff makes me feel like a fag, in a good way.
Posted: Feb 24, 2008 10:02 pm

the new Jay Reatard is good but it doesnt really move me. Some of the songwriting is really good and I recognize that...but it just doesn't shake my soul. It's just alright/good to me....not to say the Reatards really shook me that much either....do like Teenage Hate
Posted: Feb 25, 2008 10:35 am

What shakes you?
Posted: Feb 25, 2008 10:41 am

Epilepsy.
Posted: Feb 26, 2008 12:29 am

Posted: Feb 26, 2008 12:43 am | Edited by: bradx

the first reatards single is the best, by far. teenage ineptitude that can never be duplicated.

good work, dude. how's touring with the black keys? are they as boring as their music sounds?
Posted: Feb 26, 2008 10:22 am

Don't qualify it. You read it every day. You know you do.
Posted: Feb 26, 2008 10:35 am

I only read Pitchfork for the "yoga for indie rockers" links...
Posted: Feb 26, 2008 10:41 am

Excellent live pics

way better than the pitchfork pics. too bad the y stuck the sub racers down at the bottom, and in b&w. makes 'em look really bad next to jay.

Thanks! I have many other awesome ones from that night. Sorry, Submarine Races I sent on other rockin' ones but that is what the editor went with.

you're shooting for spin? way to go!

Freelancing yeah.

Don't qualify it. You read it every day. You know you do.

that's the first time in awhile i've read that horseshit. most of the crap they like is pretty damn yawn inducing.

i'm glad his jeans were as tight as his songs

and i'm also glad he's made it to the point where boobs come to the shows

Those looked like Stephen's boobs

Hell yea!

And Jay is going to have to get an internet based restraining order on Rich.
Posted: Feb 26, 2008 3:36 pm

With how bad you're gonna get sued for copyright violations I'd say you got enough to worry about, Sailor Johnny.

I've just found my new word for the day: "epicaricacy"

Thanks Donkey!
