Goner Message Board / ???? / RIP Joel Dorn
Posted: Dec 21, 2007 11:08 pm

This is already a few days ago but I just found out. Joel Dorn, who produced most of the best late 60's and 70's jazz and R&B records passed away on the 17th.

Joel produced many many albums at Atlantic for Rahsaan Roland Kirk, Eddie Harris, Les McCann, Roberta Flack, Jimmy Scott, Keith Jarrett, Donny Hathaway, Mose Allison, The Allman Brothers, Yusef Lateef and many more.

I never met him but he had a reputation as a good human being in addition to being a good producer. A friend of mine, Kevin Calabro, worked with him for several years at Hyena Records.

I've been listening to "Brotherman in the Fatherland" a lot lately. Dorn had his hands in some good shit.

I just finished listening to this piece on NPR from this week with him: http://www.npr.org/templates/story/story.php?storyId=17504751&ft=1&f=1 3

His reissues of Kirk's stuff is how I got to know of him. After that, he kept popping up all over jazz liner notes. What a great guy.

RIP.
