Goner Message Board / ???? / Nice people but a shitty band-What to do?
Posted: Aug 30, 2007 1:55 pm

Ever been in the situation where you're friends with people in a band who are super nice ,great folks, whom you love to death but their band sucks major ass? They give you copies of their awful records that you will never listen to. When you go to their shows (when you can't find an excuse not to attend) , you struggle to keeep that just -swallowed- a -bottle -of - iodine -look off your face. How do you handle it?

I just don't make any friends.

TNext time you see 'em, tell 'em,

"this is a busy HOBBY for you isn't it??!!!".
When they look at you suprised, act like nuthing you said is outa line!

NGBB=Nice Guys, Bad Band. That's a code we use to have. Especially when you are touring. You show up early, hang out and drink with the other bands before the show. Then they hit the stage, and it makes you want to run. While setting up, you manage to say "nice set". Then, of course, they want to trade cds or shirts at the end of the night. "Sorry man, we're really short on merch and we still have a week of shows".

PARTY!
Posted: Aug 30, 2007 3:49 pm

say "nice set".
Dont do that. You don't want to encourage them to inflict their suck on the world.

Go see them rarely if you must and then when they talk to you post set, pretend they didn't even play. Then burn them a cd of a good band and say, "you know what band you should sound more like...." and give it to them.

Most of my friends don't like the shit I do...they know it, and I know it...not so bad, I'm used to it.
The worst is when you are related to them....shhhh.

Well , I guess there's one consolation if you're in a shitty band- Rachel in the City will still like you.

HEE-HAW!!!
Posted: Aug 30, 2007 4:59 pm

we addressed this here before and i think the general concensus was to compliment their gear.
Posted: Aug 30, 2007 5:17 pm

compliment their gear

My god, it's HUGE!!!!
Posted: Aug 30, 2007 5:27 pm

Just tell 'em you weren't into it and continue to be nice/act how you always act. If they're fags, they'll hate you, but most are fine with it.
Posted: Aug 30, 2007 5:29 pm

i just do it. i don't think alex cuervo hates me, cuz alex cuervo rules!
Posted: Aug 30, 2007 5:30 pm

"this is a busy HOBBY for you isn't it??!!!".
Dave Vanian told our drummer that once. I about shit.

I've always used GGBB (good guys; bad band.)
Posted: Aug 30, 2007 5:43 pm

yup, just tell em the truth if you absolutly have to. if they are your friends they be coo' bout it, if not coo' bout it, they be gay.

"what the fuck? you dont like my band?! why not? fuck you then!!"

There was a an old thread on here from waaay back about this.
I think my favorite secret phrase for how to tell them they suck without hurting their feelings was "You guys are tight!"
Posted: Aug 30, 2007 6:06 pm

you say " hey, you guys sounded great..you should put out a TAPE"
Posted: Aug 30, 2007 7:07 pm

On one occasion a buddy who had just playing a set with his band that I don't care for asked me "so, how was that?" I said "It looked like you guys were trying really hard." He didn't take it too well.

I always thought the secret phrase was "You looked like you were having a lot of fun up there!"
Posted: Aug 30, 2007 7:33 pm

You guys are tight!

That's what our old drummer tells people. He moved to Tallahassee, so I imagine he's doing this even more often now.

wow.

you guys are really obsessed.

that must be a busy hobby for you.
Posted: Aug 30, 2007 8:10 pm

I prefer "you guys fucking suck" whilst erasing their numbers from my cell phone.

Bazooka Joe hates the Hex Dispensers. I'm kind of proud of that, actually.

FOREST COLSON WAS A FRIEND OF MIIIIIIINE!

Hey BaJooey - Maybe you'll like Haunted George's cover of it better.
Posted: Aug 30, 2007 8:50 pm

probably. he doesn't sing like that dude from offspring.

bwahahahahaaaaaaa!

i love you man!
Posted: Aug 30, 2007 8:53 pm

it's ok man, you were in blacktop. you don't gotta do nothin' else good.
Posted: Aug 30, 2007 9:09 pm

i know my bands are shit so i usually don't ask.
Posted: Aug 30, 2007 9:30 pm

even the few bands i like, i hate.
Posted: Aug 30, 2007 11:03 pm

"Not my cup of tea" It just seems like the proper thing to say, because inevitably, there's a niche audience out there for every band, even if it is just their mums and dads.
Posted: Aug 30, 2007 11:23 pm

it's ok man, you were in blacktop. you don't gotta do nothin' else good.

damn, an intercontinental reach around.
Posted: Aug 31, 2007 12:30 am

Just cultivate a reputation of not liking anything. Eventually, nobody will even ask if you liked it or not.
Posted: Aug 31, 2007 12:34 am

that doesnt stop you from saying "YOU SUCK" anyways...
Posted: Aug 31, 2007 12:47 am

if they don't want the truth, they shouldn't ask. or even come within earshot after their shitty set...

on the plus side, if i tell em they were good, they know i'm not just blowing smoke up their ass to be nice.
Posted: Aug 31, 2007 1:15 am

"Its not normally what I would listen to but it was good"
"Considering I usually hate action rock, that was good. I liked it"
Posted: Aug 31, 2007 1:28 am

"You're greeeeaat!.......for funk-metal/angular/twee/psychobilly/other insufferable genre."
Posted: Aug 31, 2007 1:35 am

psychobilly/

ok, what is this genre, eugene chadbourne stylings?
Posted: Aug 31, 2007 3:51 am

i just smile and nod. i hate being put in that situation. it's awkward.
Posted: Aug 31, 2007 5:05 am

just lie. do it well. or poorly. doesn't matter.

never ask if someone likes your band. if you do that you are a pussy and should be a hairdresser. see myspace.

I think australia has a law about this nice boy situation.

"it was easy it was cheap go an do it"

did DIY backfire?

"Tight Set"... a classic

"You guys bring it."

"Only you guys could pull a set off like that."

"KISS couldn't have done it better themselves."
Posted: Aug 31, 2007 6:20 am

"hey man, that was fun."

if they're good, they'll get better.

if not, hey, they're your friends. could be worse... they could be dicks and their band could suck.
Posted: Aug 31, 2007 4:24 pm

GGBB (good guys; bad band.)

awsome...thats gonna be the name of my next album
