The West Village is pretty gay (literally and figuratively), but even this long burned out bohemian hood can yield some quality celeb sightings.

Last night at work, I am outside smoking when who walks by but motherfuckin BJORK with her art star hubby Matthew Barney pushin the stroller with (presumably) their kid in it. It was weird. Domestica Exotica. Too late did I realize I could have engaged her in a convo about a mutual friend of ours (Chipps from Lightning Bolt who played on her newest rec). And really I would've just used that to segue into a discussion w/ Barney about his ridiculous/awesome/inane/mind-blowing/waste of time spectacle/film/artshit magnum dopus, THE CREMASTER CYCLE. Then I would've invited them in to shower them and their kid w/ food, drugs, and liquor.

But I didn't.

Also, that Scot actor Cillian Murphy who was in 28 Days Later and that new one Sunshine and lots of other shit was hangin at the bar last night. And, like most actors, he is very short. Like 5' 7" or 8".

Still waiting for Scarlett Johansen to come back in and ask me to fuck her.

Spotted Vincey Vaughn at the California Clipper this past winter. He had the bloated look of a full-fledged alkie, and he was drunk to the point where he almost fell into our table when he sauntered by. Surprisingly, there weren't many people hounding him or calling out shithead lines from Old School or Swingers. Should've seen the flurry of text-happy fingers once he scooted out the door, though. Never seen so many "unimpressed" pretenders in one room.

yesterday, I was working on a Food Network TV show at EP Delta Kitchen on Beale Street (Dinner Impossible, with Priscilla Presley). one of my jobs was to check in the lucky 100 Elvis fans who were chosen to gnosh with PP, and, at the same time, fend off the throng of folks trying to buy tickets for the Elvis impersonator show we had nothing to do with later that night... a lady pulling an overnight bag on wheels came up to me and said "I'm the entertainment tonight," which I assumed meant she was a vegas-style singer or dancer with the night show... turns out it was Mary Hart with Entertainment Tonight. I never recognize those folks in real life!

And, like most actors, he is very short. Like 5' 7" or 8".

the only time i was ever in Vegas, I saw Jared Leto! and he's like really (well, used to be) the only actor who I really ever seriously had a crush on....think My So-Called Life (it's OK you can't read Jordan! Let's make out! sing "I wanna be sedated" to me!)....had the crush ever since i was 15, even 30 Seconds to Mars couldn't shake my crush!! But then i saw him in Vegas and was all, "holy fuck, there's Jared Leto! Holy fuck he's like 6 inches shorter than me!"

no more crush. plus that super gay haircut gives me the heebie jeebies.

turns out it was Mary Hart with Entertainment Tonight.

Watch out! She'll give you a seizure!

bag on wheels came up to me and said "I'm the entertainment tonight,"

Heh. That's kind of hot, actually.

When Pink Reason was on tour last March with Psychedelic Horseshit, one of my bandmates at the time's girlfriend fucked Jared Leto's brother. He is the drummer from 30 Seconds To Mars. She then called him up while we were at SXSW and told him about it and yelled at him a bunch for being on tour. Unsuprisingly, when we were supposed to leave for tour again after taking a break for about a week back in Wisconsin, he declined. I guess the kid is still with her too.

I was in Moscow back in '91 or 2 or so when they were shooting The Russia House. They shot part of the movie in the same hotel we were staying at and I saw Sean Connery once.

The other day I saw Tommy Jay do Novacaine from the Ego Summit record. I see Mike Rep pretty often out at shows, and I ran into Ron House at a bar here in Columbus once too. Pretty exciting stuff for me at least.

I might have mentioned it on here before, but Johnny Rotten was drinking at the (Irish) bar by my house this spring. http://viewmorepics.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=viewImage&friendI D=58628409&albumID=0&imageID=4140987

I wasn't actually there.

I met harry shearer twice.

sarah jessica

did you buy her perfume?
Posted: Aug 16, 2007 2:53 am

i was kicked out of all shows in green bay for half a decade because of onstage behavior of my former band and afterwards, years and years of shit talking and prank phone calls, both at home in the middle of the night and to peoples workplaces.

im sure the show sucked anyways, but it was kinda surprising to me after 2 years that i was still kicked out of town, even though i was the only member of the original band present. until then i always thought it was the band that was kicked out, not me personally.

Uh......EXCUSE ME?

I'm pretty positive that they did purchase my perfume as sales are
REALLY good right now. I think all of you little people here in the Gooner buying public. Thank you thank you thank you!

Did you enjoy the new tv ad? I know I did! I'm speaking french in it of course. Cause it's set in France! I know you little ones may not have heard of France before but I can assure you it does exist! Maybe one day you can all afford to purchase a magazine with some pictures of France in it if you save your pennies from the free meal handout place (or whatever it's called!) and possibly go see a French movie!

Oh La La!

In the meantime , please spend all of your welfare checks on my perfume. Thank you thank you thank you!

Buy it!

Uh.....EXCUSE ME?

I don't recall seeing you either!
Should you be one to frolic around the Soho boutiques? Or maybe catching a private screening in the Brill Building? Sometimes I have my driver (pepe) stop by Roccos in the West Village or if I feel like slumming it, Veniros in the East village. But only for a second. I usually have pepe call ahead as to have my pastries ready for the driver to pick up as you never know what can happen in an area in which people make less than $750,000 per year! I mean, who could honestly live on that????!!!! Am I right people? I mean cmon! I mean, they way some people live, I would simply just die! I would! The East Village......HA! Why don't I just have pep roll around filth and a puddle of his own sick! Thats what you get with the East Village!

Thats why you should buy my pefume!

TA-TA!

I saw "Melrose" Larry Green the other day on Cahunenga Blv. He gave me 2 of his cards and I asked him about his radio show. He said, "Oh YOU were the listener..." I'm still gushing like a school girl.

Neighborhood (neighbor) sightings in Brooklyn

Heath Ledger and Michelle Williams with baby Matilda. They live down the block from me...always see them at the coffee shop...adorable couple...awwwww....

Kerri Russell a few times, she must live in Brooklyn...ate dinner at the table next to her when she was like 8.5 months pregnant...

Maggie Gil-en-hall (no idea how to spell that one) - lives in Park Slope, seen her on Smith St. a few times...

Gabriel Byrne a few times...lives in Brooklyn Heights I think

Eric Holmgren - semi-famous label exec who used to live in Fort Greene.

Mos Def a few times

Stacy London from What Not To Wear!!!! lives a few blocks away...

Here's a cool Matthew Barney story too. I worked on the DVD released of Cremaster 3 and went to the Guggenheim opening of the Cremaster exhib...Bjork was hanging with an entourage - her hat had a small polar bear on top of it! But Matthew was alone, away from the entourage, walking down the rotunda with his mother by his side...stopping to talk to anyone about his work; he recognized me and came up to me to discuss the centerpiece of the exhib, the 5 panel projection up top and how he'd like to incorporate it into the DVD...only met him once before but he remembered my name, introduced me to his mother and spent like 10 minutes...very thoughtful un-assuming guy...

Gonna have to come up with something better than that. I got Bowser's autograph the same year I met Big Bird backstage @ Sesame Street Live in gradeschool.

I'm having a terrible celebrity sighting/run-in drought these days so I'll remnisce for a spell...

3 years ago. Whitestripes show @ Roseland. VIP area I was between James Spader, Famke Jansen, and immediately behind Jim Jarmusch who was hotboxing cigarettes undr the table all night.

I was introduced to Christopher Walken by Julian Schnabel. Shook hands and all that. Long story but I cracked a little joke about Schnabel's frames that made them both laugh as they nursed martini's on a friday afternoon in a soho gallery.<polishing fingernails on lapel>

I have indeed seen Sarah Jessica Parker kissing her friends goodbye outside Pepe Giallo and hopping into a cab all SItC stylee.

Almost-I ducked out of a lunch last minute with some friends who sat next to Al Sharpton at KumKau on Myrtle.

I feel your pain dtrain...Elizabeth Berkley cut in front of me while on her cell in line at a deli @ Union Square.

Vincent Gallo was following me for a few weeks. Kept seeing him in strange places like the Bedford stop on the platform and even stranger places like Topps Grocery. Same with Thurston Moore (everywhere/ate next to him and lightningbolt drummer @ Bliss on Bedford)

Willem Defoe @ Broadway&Houston.

Cindy Crawford on a crosstreet (54th?). She was with a female friend. She dropped something and bent over to pick it up. I swallowed my tongue a little that day.

those are the ones I can remember right now.

Still looking to throw rotten fruit at Matthew Barney.

from my 2.5 years in nyc:

billy joel at chelsea flea market (talked to him too). jc chasez from n'sync at same place, different day.

michael imperioli at union square. adrianna from sopranos twice near st. mark's where her clothing store is.

laurie anderson on the subway. rachel dratz (sp?) from SNL. ice-t. sandra bernhard at whole foods. molto mario in the west village. chad lowe and hilary swank near union square. she was wearing a white tank top & has a kick ass body.

most joneser sighting - the redhead with curly hair that played ross's ex-wife's lesbian girlfriend on friends.

I got 'em all beat--I met Jerry Kramer, the most legendary right guard ever to grace the gridiron, at the MGM Casino in Reno. Packers rule!
Posted: Aug 16, 2007 5:59 pm

I met Mr McFeely from Mister Rogers Neighborhood when I was like 4. Got a picture with him too.
Posted: Aug 16, 2007 6:22 pm

was he mcfeelin' on you? perv.
Posted: Aug 16, 2007 6:25 pm

sandra bernhard-see her around Chelsea from time to time. Same with John Waters who invariably has a trail of colorful/suspect looking characters following him.

forgot the obvious. Here at work I've escorted Yoko Ono. Bumped into Meg Ryan post lip injections (she quite literally looks like the Joker now) she said hi. Met and escorted Flea where I watched as he oggled a few paintings, haggled, and subsequently bought a Don Van Vliet painting (AKA Captain Beefheart). $20,000 in cash from pocket. Support your local artists, Folks!

oh yeah - working at wowsville and Jim Jarmusch came in - wanted to hear the detroit cobras -- i badmouthed the cobras enough and played him a bunch of greenhornes stuff and sold him a cd or 2 of theirs -- i think i'm somehow respoinsible for them showing up on the soundtrack to that movie they're on the soundtrack of

is it just me or are all aspects of the "donnas at arby's" video horribly depressing?

that video was really depressing.

my cousin works at best buy in sherman oaks and he has a lot of funny celebrity stories. the daryl hannah one above reminded me of the one he told me, she was frustrated and screamed at him"FUCK YOUUUUUUUUU" for like no reason. she seems like an odd one. Also, Alex Baldwin shopping for stereo equipment completely wasted.

One time when I was working the door at a music/arts/etc festival, Martin Sheen tried to talk me down on the admission. "I'm just here for the poet." Sorry, it's still $20...

Matthew Perry strolls in to Duke's in West Hollywood alone on a Saturday morning and sits at the table across from me and my secretary. He seems self-conscious and exceedingly polite, and you can tell he feels uncomfortable because he's recognized most places he goes, but nobody there gives him a second look.

About 10 minutes later, Mickey Roarke swaggers in with a pair of buxom brunettes, one considerably younger. He holds court at the far back table back, directly facing Matthew. They barely acknowledge each other.

The more relaxed Mickey got, cutting up and hanging loose with his gal pals, the more uncomfortable Perry became. Matthew slammed his breakfast, paid the bill, and left abruptly.

There's a lesson or two in that, somewhere.

Eric Holmgren - semi-famous label exec who used to live in Fort Greene.

Ah, gee whiz Tom!

I must be oblivious because I hardly ever saw famous people in New York. One time though, I was hanging out in Central Park with my girlfriend at the time, sitting beside a couple with a baby. We were there for a good twenty minutes before I realized that it was Robert DeNiro playing with his kid, just ten feet from me.

My favorite though was probably meeting DeeDee at the Lakeside Lounge. Damn, I miss that bar!

I met Tim Conway once when I was a kid - there's a photo somewhere...

when i worked at Tower years ago I saw & sold CDs/DVDs to: John Mahoney (dad from Frasier), Bill Corgan (who bought laserdiscs & actually had his assistant pay for them with his card while he stood away from the register - weird), Henry Rollins, & Donovan (nice guy!)... saw Vince Vaughn once too (he's puffy from drinking too much).... Tom Waits walking down the street.... Ad Rock came into Dusty Groove once too & everyone was too stunned to help him...I just went over & asked him if I could help him find anything... nice guy as well... he ended up buying the "Funky Skull" album by Melvin Jackson....

ha, i just stepped out to get coffee 5 minutes ago and saw Donal Trump

i've also seem bill clinton come into my work building one night -- i've met him a few times but only when he was the lowly governor of arkansas

i used to be a roadie for a band in which dermot mulroney was a member - after one show in LA i met Julia Robers, Cameron Diaz and Michael Stipe. i never would have thought so but damn Julia Roberts was fucking beautiful and Cameron Diaz was just 'pretty cute' - Michael Stipe's shinny bald head was pretty mesmorizing.

My roomate badgered Gene Simmons about his face lift in Midtown a few days ago. He said Gene was yelling at his limo driver who couldn't parallel park. I beat Kim Deal at pool once at Anytenna club....whoo-hoo...

i sat at a table behind Jim Jarmusch in the lower east side.

and this isn't a personal sighting but....

my boss lives in an apt on the upper west side. for weeks she had been stared down by the man in the neighboring apartment on her floor, always in tight dark clothing, boots and sunglasses. She kept complaining to her husband about how uncomfortable it made her. One day when her husband was moving his stuff into the apartment, she spotted the creepy neighbor and pointed him out. Her husband just laughed...because it was Lou fucking Reed
Posted: Aug 16, 2007 9:09 pm

oh - my first ever celebrity sighting was on a trip to nyc in 1988 - i was in the elevator going down and it stopped on the 3rd floor and in walked Lou fucking Reed.

ha, i just stepped out to get coffee 5 minutes ago and saw Donal Trump

I know you meant DonalD but it would be pretty funny to imagine Trump and Donal Logue psychically/physically welded together.

In an effort to stay on-topic I will mention that Cybil Sheppard and I almost ran into each other outside Earnestine & Hazel's at a Christmas party a few years back. I'd had a few beers, and she was wearing sunglassses (in the dark) so those two factors probably explain it.
Posted: Aug 16, 2007 9:23 pm

I worked at Tower on Sunset and I sold cds to Tupac, Dave Foley and Kevin McDonald (kids in the hall- is that his name?), Sandra Bullock, the dad on the Fresh Prince of Bell-Air, and saw in there King Buzzo, Tom Petty, LL Cool J, Prince, Tony Bennett and the chick from Waynes World. Pretty exciting.
Posted: Aug 16, 2007 9:23 pm

Oh, and personally saw Elle McPherson steal a book, so did everyone at the cash registers, but we were all too stunned to say anything.

Evey story should end with"Lou fucking Reed".

Heath Ledger and Michelle Williams with baby Matilda. They live down the block from me...always see them at the coffee shop...adorable couple...awwwww....

Health will go into Brooklyn Inn, order a beer, and drink it without ever looking up or making eye contact with anyone, even when I throw peanuts at him....

Celebrity sightings, of people who aren't basketball players, are so rare in Portland that when Benicio Del Toro was in town a few years ago making a film, one of the local weeklies stalked him all over town and wrote about it every week. I saw him sitting outside a pizza place eating and getting phone numbers from a couple of cute girls.

I worked at Tower on Sunset
I saw Michael Douglas in there once. My favorite sighting was Aldo Ray on Hollywood Blvd in front of the Supply Sergeant. Also Horst Bucholz( Magnificent Seven) in the Mayfair on Franklin. Danny Devito at the next urinal at some fake ass English pub.

Ed Sullivan at 1970 Mid- South Fair. His hair was dyed an almost maroon color.

Cybil Sheppard and I almost ran into each other outside Earnestine & Hazel's at a Christmas party a few years back.

Through a long string of events, I am still in posession of some of Cybill Shepherd's underwear.

I was in NOLA a few years back just riding the trolley for fun up St. Charles. We saw a small commotion a little bit further up the line, and got off the car to see what was going on. Walked up to see Dustin Hoffman on the steps of a big mansion making a movie. We just stood there like yahoos and watched him. Also saw John Cusack there!

Have met and talked to Dan Bern many times.

That's it.

I was in LA with a bunch of friends for spring break back in high school and we went to Tower Records on Sunset. We're waiting at a stop light and an old ZZ Top hot rod pulls up kitty-corner from us. The driver rolls down his window, and my friend, Cory, sees him and yells at the top of his lungs: ICE-T!!!! It was. Inside, he chatted with the clerk about hardcore music.

At Gonerfest last year my girlfriend and I took the Stax Museum tour with Bonnie Raitt and her assistant/friend. It was sort of weird.
She was in the Stax gift shop when we got there. We heard her assistant got in trouble for walking through the museum yakking on his cellphone the whole time.

Until this past year, I would see Jerry "California Uber Alles" Brown all the time. He lived just up the street from the Stork Club and would go in there for a beer with his dog sometimes. And I saw him on BART once. Pretty cool.

I saw former Met and Expo great, Rusty Staub, at a steakhouse in Manhattan once and I about fainted from excitement. Le Grande Orange!

When I was a little kid, my folks were friends with Kerwin Matthews, who played Sinbad in Ray Harryhousen's The Seventh Voyage of Sinbad, and Gulliver in Harryhousen's The Three Worlds of Gulliver, among other B-movies. I didn't know who he was at the time, so I wasn't very impressed. Stupid kid.

He just died in the last month. Hw was also in "Jack the Giant Killer" which is beyond awesome as well as "Sinbad".

also saw barry bonds jogging on moring outside my work - it was like a scene from rocky or something - folks cheared him on as he ran

He was waiting in line with all of us for DDT (Dickinson boys) at SXSW about 97. I didn't get in, but neither did he - hats off to SXSW for no rockstar special treatment!

My other stories are all from the stereo store I worked at in 1981 and 82, because it's on State Street in Santa Barbara, a major tourist alley.

Joe Walsh (pretty wasted...just stoned & red-eyed, I think - wish I could have hung out with him), Gene Hackman (very quiet, almost shy), Jonathan Winters (basically did a 45-minute improv for us - guess he's known for that around town - wish I'd had a tape recorder running), and John Belushi and his wife (I think I found the place in Wired that describes this trip up the coast.) I still have his autograph somewhere.

Carlos Santana and Robert Palmer (not together) at Streetlight Records in SF.

Guess that's about it...well, there's also the Skatalites (celebrities in my world) and the time I got to interview Toots Hibbert. Super-cool guy.

I had dinner with him at a friend's house last nite -- he's scary-smart and has two sirius radio shows... I was glad to hear that he's doing so good. in ye olden antenna days, I thought he was just some lucky drunk bastard with a hit record.

when Benicio Del Toro was in town
yeah, I worked on 21 grams and he and charlotte gainsbourg were super-nice. sean penn sucked. we all got a memo saying we couldn't make eye contact with him. benicio hung out at sun every day and invited all those kids to come to the crew christmas party... I am looking forward to seeing him as che...

That's kind of hot, actually.
well, it was 107 outside and mary hart didn't look a bit wilted!

no kidding! when i was working on "state of grace," he punched out the lawyer for the completion bond company who was forced to come to the set to try to convince sean not to do his own stunts because the production company would lose their bond if sean got hurt. great actor; total dick

eye contact? i thought we just weren't supposed to talk to mr penn. (i came onto the set after the email) he was a jackass. but he narrated the dogtown movie. i stood next to him for about an hour, no talking. nope. naomi watts was nice. benicio seemed cool but his part of the movie was done by the time i showed up.

one trip to nyc in the mid 80s, find myself walking behind gilbert gottfried in the east village, all nerdy w/backpack and all. we all stop at a light waiting to cross the street and some older lady comes up and tells him "don't worry about what they're saying, just keep doing your thing." that was awesome.

met the KGB Chicken (later the San Diego Chicken) when I was a little leaguer. man i gotta find that picture.

Saw Chaz Palminteri in Manhattan outside FAO Schwarz.

Jack Nicholson at a basketball game in college.

Met/talked to several bands at the place I worked at in college - most of them being shitty:

Bryan Adams (he offered my beer, which I couldn't accept. Also, he brought a bunch of girls backstage that the roadies had rounded up, and he proclaimed that for them to get into the dressing room they had to take their tops off. 8 out of 10 did).

Def Leppard (The one-armed guy was a ass, but the rest were nice. Joe Elliot is a tall motherfucker).

Barry Manilow (I've mentioned this before - TOTAL ass - we had to turn and face the wall whenever he "entered our area". He screamed obscenities at his band during sound check - "you FUCKING MORON, I told you already, you're PLAYING THAT PART WRONG" - shit like that)

Smashing Pumpkins

Dave Matthews

REM (Stipe had his own, separate dressing room)

Radiohead

Michael Bolton

Kenny Rogers (cocky, but funny)

Garth Brooks (he was very nice, and played basketball with the Michigan State basketball team during their practice, before the show)

Bush

No Doubt

Bob Seger

Alan Jackson

Brooks & Dunn

Hank Williams Jr. (major dickhead)

The Judds

Reba McEntire (major bitch)

Vince Gill

Magic Johnson (saw him almost daily, because he used to hang out with the Michigan State basketball team a lot).

Benny Hinn (faith healer - people were actually being pulled out of their wheelchairs, only to crash to the floor when people let go of them)

Teg Nugent (and the rest of the Damn Yankees - they were hanging out backstage for the Bryan Adams show).

Mr. Big (the singer looks like a woman - like I seriously thought he was a woman)

All For One (very lame N-Sync wannabes)

more that I can't think of now.

Though not a celebrity sighting, but worth mentioning just the same - the best thing I saw there (BY FAR) was the circus in 1993 - they had chimps riding horses wearing curly blond wigs. It was amazing. Their trainer could tell that I wanted to take one home, but he urged me to not look them in the eyes, because they would "go nuts" and be swinging in the rafters for hours. I really should have looked them in the eyes.

I remember hanging out with rosco gordon in his hotel room, waiting for a baseball game to end so we could split -- he was a huge barry bonds fan, so I know he was smiling in heaven last week.

samuel l. jackson came to a party at my house exactly 2 years ago -- during the katrina thing. he was cool! the rapper david banner showed up in a limo!?!? and jack oblivian and rich crook were heckling him!

In the mid80's, I met the vocal group, Expose in a NYC hotel elevator. At the time, their greatness had not reached Iowa, so I had no idea who they were.

In 1994, I met Steve Winwood at a jazz club in Chicago. About an hour later, he was manhandling a girl my age in front of the women's bathroom.

5 years ago, I washed Wavy Gravy's hair for my boss. Wavy still comes in a few times a year.

We passed Alec Baldwin on the street in NYC 2 years ago. He was with a tall beautiful young woman. Alec looked chubby.

We saw Marilyn Manson without make-up eating at a Chevy's in a mall in Burbank.

Let's see if I can't scrape some more off the bottom of this barrel...

I was faux-finishing a wall at Fitzgerald's casino in Tunica, MS just above Jim Nabors as he sat down for breakfast. I was unaware it was him until the waitress axed him what he wanted to drink I hear a the honking country voice answer "Iiice TaaAy." Gomer Fucking Pyle. Unmistakable. He was performing at Fitzgerald's that night and the night before and indulging in a little of that casino comp action I suppose.

Steve Winwood

his first wife used to come into my office at Island and ask for an advance on "Stevie's" royalties - they lived out in the English countryside, and this office was in LA - she'd travel the world on a shopping spree. we'd have to call him to let him know - but he made a shit ton of money. the last project i did for Island was START the winwood box set - it took 10 years and about 8 other A&R guys to complete it, but i got to go to his house in the country and go through his archives with him. he's got COOL stuff as you might imagine.

the big deal for me -- i sneaked at peek at his B3 to check his settings.... all the draw bars were pulled out to the max

my ex mother in law's brother henry has been a constant companion of TP's for 25 years; TP's wife is Henry's agent and both Henry and TP were best friends (on diff coasts) of the remarkable novelist Gaddis, the most overlooked writer of the last 30 years, discounting the staags chief lyricist. When henry got married 7 years ago (Bev Hills; next door to devito; ex home to marilyn mccoo and 5th D hubby (Billy?)) I was in the kitchen (natch) choosing a wine more befitting of my stature (a second growth 89 Bordeaux) when the phone rang. henry's soon to be wife (in 20 minutes) answered and rtalked and then yel\led Henry It's Tom. Being bnb ot yet drunk and having had a million conversations with henry about TP (2nd hand stories of TP's flight to Mexico; Tp's constant presence ay yankee stadium with son; Tp's grade at Cornell in Nabokov's Lit class) i knew who Tom was. I adopted a puppy dog pleading face and jackie said, wld you like to say a word, and I jumped on: blah blah: gravity's being unteachable for me; Lot 49 a masterpiece; the yankees blow; and whether he liked pere ubu, a band he knew about but cld not remember whether he liked or not. I thanked and put henry on coz call was simple congrats and good luck. if my wife had not turned into a fucking robot then henry and i wld still talk and i wld beg for a seat next to TP on their next yankee stadium visit.

GWEN STEFANI: "Is this the only women's bathroom?"
Totally forgot. I saw Gwen S. and Gavin Rossdale and the rest of their crummy bands in the lobby of the Ames, Iowa Holiday Inn when I was there to deliver a pizza to one of the rooms. No Doubt were in town touring with Bush and the Goo Goo Dolls. When I walked passed them, Gwen said, "Oooh, pizza!"

On the same job, I delivered a lot of pizzas backstage at the local arena during concerts. The only time I ever saw a member of any band was when I saw the drummer of Hootie and the Blowfish when he waiting in the wings about to go back out for an encore.

i was at MOMA about 20 years ago or so with my roommate at the time, her sister and the sister's fiance. the girls are from providence RI and have some serious heavy accents (and i had never thought of RI as having any particular accent - but these gals were like brooklyn to the nth degree, only with a RI touch). we are admiring the surrealist exhibit - particularly "ce n'est pas une pipe" by magritte.

the sister is going - all loud and suburban w/ her seriously heavy accent, "i don't get it - it IS a pipe" and my roommate and i are trying to tell her - "no - its a picture of a pipe" when my roommate's head turns and she says out loud - in her heavy accent - OHMYGAWD....HAROLD PINTER and starts after him -- "Mr Playwright, Mr Playwright" for several paces til he turned a corner and she gave up.

i would have loved to have conversed with Pinter under different circumstances.

In my high school years I lived in the same neighborhood as Jonathan Richman in Nevada City, CA a little Sierra foothills town. I'd see him out and about with his kids. Only knew he was "a singer, who is more famous in Europe". My friend's "hot" mom was always trying to meet him. I grew more impressed over the years as I became a Modern Lovers fan, but had moved away and never saw him. When Ben Orr died, some friends of mine did a tribute show, and benefit for pancreatic cancer research, and Jonathan gave a little talk about Ben and the early days of the Cars. Before he went on stage (at Bottom of the Hill, SF), I walked past and overheard him saying, "Let's get this over with and get the hell out of here". Which is exactly what he did...kind of an ass.

In keeping with the other thread Jack linked, Pauly Shore, in the middle of his 15-20 minutes of fame, hung out at "my bar" in college. He had an enormous bouncer with him, was probably 19-20 (I know he was underage), and was stumbling wasted. Girls flocked, and dudes shouted stuff at him. I went up and told him that he wasn't funny, and he laughed. Whenever I see these people I have the urge to flip them off (Gerardo) or tell them they suck (Lita Ford). I've never run into anyone cool, though, just z-grade homos. Bowser or Lou Reed would be nice. Though Marie Osmond (circa '89 or so) was maybe the hottest woman I've ever seen (a surprise), really tiny, and very nice. I know/knew Cindy Crawford's cousin/pal, actually her (now ex-) husband, and talked to her about a summer job pre-fame she had where a couple buddies had said they'd worked with her (it was true). Never met a Packer I thought was nice/cool, they've all been douchebags (Favre, Chmura, Winters), dumb (KGB), or smack-talking (William Henderson on several occasions, dude doesn't like me). Ron Wolf was a cranky, grumbling bastard.

west akron's summit mall

I was a janitor here when I was 18. Pre-remodeling.

Once I had to clean up an old man's shit off the carpet at 7 in the morning.

Fuckin mallwalkers.

Also, a giant puddle of vomit in the arcade section from some stupid kid who musta had to many pretzels and Orange Julius'. But getting high and reading spy novels in the abandoned Jewel Mart was pretty rad. I've got some good stories from that old-ass mall (it was built in the late 60s I think).

Then my step mom gets on the phone... she was in NY or LA or something and apparently had met Mr. Nixon at a thrisft store or something and they hit it off and he invited her and her friends to come to dinner at his house. One of the more memorable phone calls I've ever recieved.

Also, wasn't Keb Mo with Bonnie Raitt at the STAX museum?

Austin? I dunno, the kid from goonies that went on to befriend Encino man and win our hearts as Rudy. And when I was 15 or 16 I got the Donnas high and hit on them too much for about an hour while they complained to their manager about the club. I also wlaked up to 3/4 of the Dictators and told them that Manitoba's Kingdom sucked and they got kind of upset.

was hitch hiking up 101 and got picked up by a young Hells Angel and rode all the way to the Springfield creamery, run by Kesey's brother, just north of Eugene OR.

It was cold and I had on my WWI long coat, some kraut officer, it had this cute fur collar. Bermuda shorts and combat boots, the beard was in full bloom, had no probs scoring pussy, so it was quite some time ago. Maybe like 1971.

I purusing the yogurt and curds section looking for some raw goat mild fixture and in come thee novelist and his entourage. Just to show off that he was the top rooster in the yard, Ken starts some edgy rant and seems to be speaking to each of us all at once a kinda double meaning. ~ Ginsberg, Reno - wanted to fuck my roommate while staying at university "hotel". Fruit basket. Not jealous in the least as he had creepy lips. Fucked some failed journo-rachelinthecity fag that wrote about it the next week instead. Learned that fags on a reading tour will fuck anything

~ Ginsberg, Reno -

I completely forgot about this until now, but Ginsburg did a reading (including Howl) at Rutgers in about '91. I believe he may have been involved with a student on campus. Said student did a "poetry" reading w/electric guitar pre Ginsburg. Man it was awful.

I'm pretty sure I saw Joan Jett at the Guitar Wolf show at CBGB. Alo James Iha at Manitoba's.

oh shit - Ginsberg hit on me freshmen year of college - did not succumb to his chicken hawk ways but we got him really stoned and he came up to my radio show and read some poems and played a tape of kerouac reading Dr Sax over Sinatra. anyways, we got him really stoned and he left his personally annotated complete works behind (i think its in the smithsonian now) - his handler called up 1/2 hour after he left freaking out about the book.

Ginsberg hit on me freshmen year of college

ditto. I was trying to tell him about punk rock, he was into it but I think he'd of rather gotten me into him.

stood next to Joan Jett at a Tom Petty show at the Whiskey ...
had to "hang" next to Bonnie Raitt at the stage at a Habib Koita show - she's tiny (& foxy)
Patricia Arquette was watching her kid at the park while I was watching mine, but she didn't deign to interact so I chatted up the nanny instead

my dad sat next to Robert Goulet at an airport bar

Bill Clinton used to drive by our front window in his limo, there'd always be a hand waving (his?). I went up to the hotel a million times to buttonhole him but never succeeded

are musicians celebrities or just musicians? i'm thinking "celeb" almost means TV or movin' pictures

James Iha at Manitoba's-that's another one that was following me. esp. when I lived in Yburg.
his recording studio is around the block from where I work so I see him from time to time over here too.

Russel Simmons in the West Village a month back (Def Jam Russell not BXdrummer Russell)

Evander Holyfeld @ Memphis Airport.

Gabriel Byrne twice on the Upper West Side.

Bob Denver coming out of 'Aliens' @ a cinema in East Memphis. I just looked it up to see what year-1986. I'm pretty positive it was the Mall of Memphis. More importantly I was coming out from seeing 'Club Paradise'!

Cybil Sheppard and I almost ran into each other outside Earnestine & Hazel's at a Christmas party a few years back.

i was backstage at a huge kroq thing at irvine meadows like 10 years ago , stumbling in a vicodin/champagne fog and walked right into dave grohl, we hit hard and both fell down. he hadn't looked where he was walking either and was real apologetic. anthony keidis was with him. i also met a guy once who was in AA with keidis and robbed him while he was on tour.

Until this past year, I would see Jerry "California Uber Alles" Brown all the time. He lived just up the street from the Stork Club and would go in there for a beer with his dog sometimes. And I saw him on BART once. Pretty cool.

One of the very few times I went to the gym, i was at the Club One in downtown Oakland and heard this guy cursing this other guy about vitamins and dietary supplements, it was really annoying and i finally turned around and saw it was Jerry Brown, all sweaty with a towel around his neck berating some hapless guy who looked like he could care less about how to eat healthy. I do like Jerry Brown though.

Bill Murray- never personally met this all time hero, but a friend of mine did some picture framing for his wife and went to his house to put together a bike for his kid. not my story and it is long, but needless to say he sounds like quite a cool person.

ike turner- really long story but he lived in the town next to mine growing up and people who could care less would tell me all the time they saw or met him. he would like autograph my friends coolers at the beach and shit. it took years but i finally did meet him in an airport parking lot.

John Salley- met him walking into the baseball card shop next to Larry Hardy's old house in Burbank. He was really cool. and quite tall.

i never remember famous encounters until someone mentions them or i see them on tv or something.

1998-Some bar on Sunset Blvd. (Akbar?)-I'm a wee bit tipsy and while perusing the jukebox,I bump my head on the thing and make it "Bohemian Rhapsody" skip. I turn around and Janeane Garofalo is giggling at me hysterically. Fuck you flag burning bitch.

I just remembered--1992 Philly airport, all of Boyz II Men at the height of their fame picking up their friend who was sitting on front of me on my flight--I walked out of the doors and there's a new red Nissan Pathfinder sitting right there at the curb with each of the four guyz wandering around talking on cell phones (in '92! who the hell had em then?!) and then embracing their homie and making sure they were generally seen by everyone for a hundred yards in any direction. A guy I worked with told me about seeing them singing on street corners in downtown Philly when they were in high school. Word.

Saw Alice Cooper get off a plane in San Francisco, and subsequently wait for his luggage. It was New Year's day, 1997 - he had played the night before in Detroit and was on the same plane to SF with the people I was waiting to pick up.

I deliver to NBA all-star/guy who choked his coach, Latrell Sprewell, on a regular basis. Usually it's a "homie" who answers though.

Also, while delivering to the front desk employees of our fanciest hotel (who make you wait for goddamnned eternity), I made eye contact with a guest walking up to check in. I immediately recognized the face but didn't care/pay much attention and continued staring at the wall. The guy sorta mumbled his last name, to which the desk guy booms, "Colin?", completely startling me, and leading me to kind of jump and lean towards their direction to respond to my name. I startled them in turn, both looking at me like I was sorta retarded, and explained that my name is Colin as well.

"It's a good one," was what Colin Mochrie replied, before returning to the concierge to finish business. Man, that guy is quick on his feet.

oh shit - Ginsberg hit on me freshmen year of college

i have also been hit on HARD by two minor celebs
so i forgot to mention this/these besides the obvious acts that the encounters were unconsummated

mr brady robert reed in a west akron bar (annabelle's) after talking films the whole night: he lectured in the UCLA film dept and actually was wicked smart. and drunk.

and invasion of the body snatchers star kevin maccarthy was ALL over me; i told him i prefer the sutherland remake and he agreed. another west side akron bar, samantha's

i did not mean to imply that ginsberg was a monir celeb; but then again when i met him he was into that chanting TM OOOOMMMM shit and his reading was a snoozer, almost as bad as when the ramones used to breeze into downtown kent, play for 20 minutes, and then throw couches outside the undergrads' apt windows looking for darvon and traces of liquor.

fuck them all.

no more heroes, please.
Posted: Aug 22, 2007 4:06 pm

my other famous poet encounter - on a trip to ireland back in '90 i spent a whole night in a bar with Seamus Heaney -- everyone would buy him drinks and he'd pass them off to me. we talked about small town american hardware stores which were he was fascinated by. very crucial dude.

Not many TV/Movie star sightings for me but a ton of different brushes with musician types. Here's the most recent one

This past weekend I worked the Junior Brown show in Lex, Mi. I was running a little bit late to get there and was having a cigarette out in the back parking lot at the theater he was playing at and I see this old guy come out one of the back doors in nothing but a towel go into the van parked right by the doors, get something out then go back inside. An old guy in pretty rough shape. All hunched over, big gut and not the healthiest skin tone.

I finish my cig and go in. Yeah, it's pretty close to showtime and I know I'm not suppose to go through those door at that close to show time but what's the big deal, huh? Anyways, I quickly learned that the big old guy was Junior Brown because I then walked by him taking a dump in the bathroom. Why he didn't have the door closed...I dunno. I just nodded and kept walking.

Between shows (the place does one act/two show gigs) me and another of the tech crew guys step out back for some air. Junior's rhythm section (not his wife anymore but two younger guys) are in the van toking it up smellier than a scene from a Cheech and Chong film. Dunno if Jr was in the van though.

A friend of mine almost got beat up at the rainbow on sunset for after being snubbed by Slash and his entourage, my friend picked up a piece of pizza and started eating it. People started freaking out and telling him to "put down the pizza", so he put it down, on Slashs head. I left pretending not to know him about then.

I saw Fonzie in west Manhattan: pretty short. He must have seen recognition in my face, and ducked down and kept walking (there was no-one else around). If I'd been thinking on my toes, I'd-a said, "AAAAAYYYYYyyyy!"

I interviewed Sonny Barger (Hell's Angels) and took my girlfriend's son to meet him: perfect gentleman.

I was showing Muddy Spear around hollywood and shit and saw Joan Rivers driving her gay ass Plymouth Prowler. She looked like a wrinkly dinosaur.
Yesterday, I recorded a voiceover audition yesterday for David Faustino a.k.a. Bud Bundy. Dudes a shrimp and way self conscious. Shelly Long from Cheers was also here too...Didn't see her though. My Co-workers said she looked old.

Matthew Broderick came into the joint the other night. He was with a regular. Cool guy, cellist.

These dudes were waiting to do blow in the kitchen bano and were like, "Is Sarah Jessica here?" I'm, "No." They're, "C'mon, she's gotta be here." I'm, "No." They're, "C'mon..." I'm, "I just made the guy's fucking steak tartar and that horse-faced cunt is not fucking here!" They're, :(.

It was hard to resist the urge to quote some Ferris Bueller.

"I'm Heir ick, Tartar King of Greenwich."

what cha need?

Cuz I'm about to quit aforementioned job.

Might start working at a new vegan Jamaican (!?!) restaurant that Greg (formerly of The Broke Revue and Oakley Hall) is opening. We'll see how that pans out.

Let it be known that I am a hell of a waiter.

I worked at the Beverly Center (Los Angeles, CA) last year. One day, this well-groomed, well dressed shortish black man came into my store and I started talking to him. We shot the shit for awhile, found out he grew up in TN (chattanooga?), and soon some salesdrone from another store came running in "YOU FORGOT YOUR WALLET!" and kissed his ass pretty hardcore. Anyway, I asked him what he did and he smiled and said "Entertainment Industry". I laughed and said "Yeah, isn't everyone out here? Good luck, man." His credit card had the name "raymond" on it (don't remember his full name, just raymond stuck out) and he left. One of my co-workers came screaming out of the back "OMG THAT WAS USHER!!!!!" Who?

Yeah, that happens a lot with me. I have absolutely no idea who anyone is out here.

Tom Beringer also came in, as did David Cross, William Shatner's ex-wife, one of the guys from the blackeyed peas, Paris Hilton, etc. I had no idea until other people told me.
