hate to say it but i'm extremly dissapointed in the new album. rhythmically it's great, the playing is good, lots of crazy noise and neat effects and dynamics and what not, but the vocals aren't loud enough and there just arne't anyreal "songs/ anthems" like the last one. everysong pretty much sounds the same. i was happy to hear it but i can't imagine i'll ever play it again.

man, I gotta get this....

It's a 4 disc set and they look incredible! I'm on the 1st disc and Popeye has
already beat the shit out of whole groups of Arabs, Mexicans, Irishmen and Indians!! There's a disclaimer at the beginning of each disc saying, "...these cartoons are a product of their time and depict racists and sexist stereotypes which were wrong then and are wrong now... blah, blah, blah..." Can you say GAY?
I'm still still waiting for him to beat ass on Chinamen and Negroes! Another cool Popeye gag is when he hits an animal and the animal falls back in the form of processed food: Popeye hits a charging bull and a few seconds later sausage, cold-cuts, roasts and a Kosher ham all fall from the sky to make a outdoor butcher shop! HA!
I Yam Wut I Yam!

That's making me hungry.

but popeye gots the hottest chick on the planet!

One exciting aspect of the early 1930's Popeye cartoons is that Olive potentially getting RAPED but Bluto is a constant vehicle for humor. It happens over and over. Usually, Olive is dancing the Hoochie-Choochie on a table while wearing a sexy dress in some dive saloon. Bluto chews tobacco and gets drunk till he can't stand it. He will grab Olive in his arms and say something like, "Come here Baby, give me a kiss!" Olive will hit him and say, "Leave me alone, you Brute!" Then Bluto will say, "Ah, Fuck it!" He'll grab Olive and to take her to a secluded spot where he can bugger her. Meanwhile, Popeye is getting his ass kicked by Banditos, Arabs, wild animals or whatever. Bluto will throw Olive down on a table and rip off her clothes. Then right as he's unbuckling his pants and getting ready to whip out his tool, Popeye, who has just eaten his spinach at this point, will come along and beat his ass. Many times Olive, all slathered up at this point, swings wildly into the air and will end up punching Popeye. Popeye will pummel Bluto. Olive will jump on Popeye and smother him in kisses. Popeye's pipe will spin in his mouth and then blow a plum of smoke. Popeye will wink at the camera. Olive is the classic crazy girl. It's hot.

I like it, just think the songs aren't quite as good.

Also, getting sick of the Distillery production style. (Although there are some cool tweaks on the record, but it's starting to feel novel/cliche).

Lamps new album (way, WAY better than the first)

really? how do you figure?

I think the production is a lot better on this one. I think Monty's singing is better on this one (less of the caveman growl and more actual singing). The first one, which I also loved, was a bit more straight ahead garage - this one seems stranger, which appeals to me. It just sounds like the band has evolved....in a good way.

i never jumped outta my chair once to play air guitar to it.

That's probably a good thing.

Also, getting sick of the Distillery production style. (Although there are some cool tweaks on the record, but it's starting to feel novel/cliche).

Have you heard the new Miss Alex White? That was recorded there too but sounds very different from the production on the Lamps.
Posted: Aug 16, 2007 12:59 am

Yes, I have. Everything sounds so compressed and claustrophobic (and I lie that Alex White record pretty good). I really like the new Demon's Claws but the production kind of bums me out, for instance. Also, it's starting to make all the InThe Red bands sound sorta similiar. Almost like the 90s when everybody was getting recorded by Albini in that same Jesus Lizard way.
Posted: Aug 16, 2007 1:11 am

I don't think the Demon's Claws and Lamps records have very similar production. I'd be hard pressed to define "The Distillery Sound," 'cuz I don't think there is one.

I mean, FUCK YOU!

absolutely. that's why the necessary evils recs al sound like shit.

I think Monty's singing is better on this one

i couldn't even hear it!

(less of the caveman growl and more actual singing).

huh??? are thinking of the same lamps or the swing band lamps?

The first one, which I also loved, was a bit more straight ahead garage

if that record was "garage" then i'm a garage faggot (note: i'm not a garage faggot)

It just sounds like the band has evolved

if evolution means less songs and no vocals then count me out of our evolution. i genuinely dilike this record for not having the "i'm gonna kick your ass vibe" of the first but attempting it anyway and unfoundedly.

i never jumped outta my chair once to play air guitar to it.

That's probably a good thing.

no way jose! that's what it's all about!

Whatever happened to that keen ear and incisive wit, Lastname? C'mere, maybe you need to get high or something. (Blame Chicago)

The Distiilery sound is SCREE. One of my fave things, but I'm sick of the hiss of the hi-hats and the teeth-gritting feedback. Once again, I live and breathe these things, but they sound really THIN on some of these recordings. Maybe Demon's Claws has a warmer vibe on vinyl, but there ain't no swamp there, and they's a swampy band, no?

Look, I LIKE THESE GODDAMN RECORDS. But that don't mean they're perfect, OK?

I'm gonna go listen to some BDP....

I think it's unwise to send all the artists on your label to the same recording engineer (I also think it tends to homogenize the sound of the records), but I think all the artists have been different enough to overcome it for the most part...my main beef is that I think that the guy who recorded alla those bands just hasn't gotten good sounds onto tape... I haven't heard the new Lamps & have only heard a couple of the new M.A.White songs (which sound pretty good), but I feel I'm also among the minority who thinks that the production on the first Demon's Claws record was perfect....PERFECT!
Posted: Aug 16, 2007 4:53 pm

i have just read this entire list and am wondering "how did i ever get here...we have nothing in common at all"

this is not a criticism. just an observation.

I hear ya on the thin production on that Demon's Claws rec, but it suits 'em to a "T." The Lamps LP doesn't sound thin at all. The only similarity between both recordings is that they're loud and nasty, the Lamps being the louder and nastier of the two.

Joe, you didn't beat the air guitar to "Bile"? Go to bed.

I agree. I like both LPs a lot, but the new one, while it may lack a couple of the first one's killers, is a better listen overall. I like the "actual singing," the production (a lot), the dynamics/less garagy approach, hell, it's just really good. Has a more AmRep touch to it than the blown-out garage...which I like, but I'm kinda tired of it. The new Alex White album sounds really great.

Someone mentioned Venom P Stinger above, fuck, their theme song on that punk comp is one of the most powerful hardcore-esque tracks of the decade. Swings like a motherfucker, most underrated drummer I can think of. And of course their amazing live LP and most of their studio tracks until around "Tearbucker" or whatever the fuck that album was called. Fungus Brains ruled, too!

And the Wax Museums! Fuck!

DUH! I'm just pointing out that you said this was a bad thing for a label to do yet two of the best labels of all time did exactly that with great success.
Posted: Aug 17, 2007 3:16 am

Couldn't that success be attributed more to singular visions of the producers moreso than the artists & engineers?....I dunno - wasn't really trying to dis anyone...I just think that variety is the spice of life....

Downside: Their dvd-player plays most of my dvd's (Black Lips, Black Out, Spits, etc.) in black and white. They should've bought the least expensive one instead of this pricey motherfucker.

"get stoned ezy" high speed and the afflicted man

this rules. hard. just heard it for the first time last week.

the vocals are definitely more buried on the new lamps v. 1st, but the songs are definitely "catchier." i don't know which i like "better" but the 2nd is definitely an easier listen.

2001 red burgundy

We just had a feeding frenzy last Friday pre-selling 2005 Red Burgundy from Lucien Le Moine...sold out of various wines ranging from $125 to $750 a bottle in less than an hour! These are wines where our complete offering ranged from 6 bottles to 12 bottles per wine...that's it...and they're gone!

if you're into wine, you should email me at tomh at morrellwine dot com
