and on the live WMSE version, when the back-up vocal comes in, jesus!

God Only Knows - Beach Boys

avoiding blues and soul 45s...

Keith Richards' version of Donnie Fritts' "We Had It All"
Tony Joe White's "Rainy Night in Georgia"
Elvis Presley "Cold Kentucky Rain"
Townes Van Zandt "Flying Shoes"
Television "Adventure" (a writer friend of mine turned me on to this previously unreleased song...the coda gets me time)

And y'all are all entitled to your opinions re: Jeff Tweedy/Wilco. I can take it! I'm gonna go ahead and add them in either the thread about bands "only you like" or bands "other Goners would make fun of you for."

I live in Chicago, where Jeff Tweedy could fart into a mic for 45 minutes & critics/fans here would cream their pants over it...I'm done with this guy...

Why yes, Driver. Should have known you'd know it.
I saw Mickey Newbury at the P&H in 2001, not too long before he died. It was one of the most memorable music nights I ever had. It was surreal as all hell. He was down and out, and incredibly awesome.

Here's a good bio:

I've been wanting to respond properly to this thread, but you guys have a LOT of the ones on my (long) list. Plus, it may be hormonal, but lots of songs choke me up. I mean, LOTS. But, my list has tons of repeats from above.

try a little tenderness
van morrison - and it stoned me
patches, by clarence carter
"souvenirs" by john prine
Long, Long, Time- Linda Ronstadt
Take A Letter Maria - R.B. Greeves
that State Trooper song by Springsteen -
on the dark end of the street
i wish it would rain the temptin tempts
ain't nothing like the real thing
cat stevens - trouble
And other songs on Mona Bone Jakon
Amoreena - Elton John
oh cat stevens sad lisa
Nothing Compares to U - Sinead O'Connor via Prince
Angels Wanna Wear My Red Shoes has done it for me too, but damn near anything offa My Aim is True, This Year's Model, Armed Forces or even Get Happy might make me cry like a baby when combined with other factors...
Most especially, Allison
the river
joni mitchell

Also, Played Real Good for Free
Elvis - Kentucky Rain, In the Ghetto, I Was the One (my favorite Elvis song)
Visions of Johanna - Bob Dylan or Dan Bern
Chelsea Hotel - Dan Bern
One More Light - Dan Bern
Anchorage - Michelle Shocked
A Murder of One - Counting Crows
the aforementioned San Francisco Mabel Joy
ABC - Jackson 5 (for personal reasons, not content)
Any Other Way - Johnny Singer
Famous Blue Raincoat - Leonard Cohen

I know, I'm a pop music fag.

"I Wish I Was Your Mother" by Mott the Hoople

"Whipping Post" live has that one Duane solo, gets real slow in the middle, that just
tears
me
up

Sonic's "Goin' Bye" does it, which is probably why Mrs. Smith nicked the riff, which she then had the audacity to call "Frederick"

Elvis for Kentucky Rain when it hits
that too, strangely NOT "Don't Cry Daddy" or "You Gave Me a Mountain". E.'s version of "Goodtime Charlie..." can do it tho.

Also, "Africa Remembers" by Youssou N'dour is pretty powerful stuff, once you've read the translated lyrics

let me explain how the Baha Men's "who let the dogs out" chokes me up. sometimes, when my lady is wearing a leather dominatrix outfit and walking me with a leash and chain, she'll sing the "who let the dogs out" part and I'll respond with the barking chorus, but then she'll yank my choke chain and I'll get all choked up.

DARK GLOBE-SYD BARRETT
Pretty much the whole Mad Cap Laughs album is really somber, but this one track in particular he just sounds totally exposed. Listening to this song, and realizing how fragile he was when he wrote it...it just makes me so sad.

Most romantic tune: "When You Smile" by Dream Syndicate

Heartbreaking LP: Lee Hazlewood's Love and Other Crimes, which doesn't make much sense because in some ways it's far less personal than his other recs. I dunno. Reasonable answer is likely Requiem for an Almost Lady but it's too heavy-handed or something. Anyway, I always think of Leo Cohen as a pretender to this kinda throne, and any time I'm tempted to listen to him, which is almost never, I throw on Lee instead.

Skip Spence. And yeah, Syd.

I really like Modern English's After the Snow. LP and song. Yep.

JAMC lyrically and musically. Of course. Lots of other twee shit. Chills' "Pink Frost." And Gordons' "Coalminer's Song." Guitar is tantamount to a shaking death rattle on that one. Sounds like a close relative kicking the bucket.

I always go back to the same sadsack songs!

I gotta go with the Van Morrison version.

Hmmm, the 13th Floor Elevator's version reminds me of Michio Kadotani.
This version is nice
Though my favourite version is by Bob Dylan and also the rendition that Damon & Naomi & Batoh & Kurihara did.

I don't get choked up by nothing but I was in Stop and Shop yesterday and they were playing some sad song by Green Day about waking him up after September ends or something. It sounded like 16 Blue by The Replacements only sung by some guy who looks like Eric Pastlame.
