to answer a few burning questions, this class will be concentrating on the mechanisms of culture. i'm using "goners" because my professor and i feel this little group of people is unique in that you all have defied, in some way or another, some of the theories surrounding culture. my aim is to explore this. with the various interests we have here, its hard for anyone entity to exploit them. look at what rachelandthecity is always trying to do. it never works. are we punk? are we losers? are we so out of touch that no one else cares? are we so hip that no one can keep up? i'm very interested in developing an argument for another approach to cultures like this. in theory this group is situated in emergence and is feeding off residual elements in culture awaiting dominant exploitation. this group is different; instead of using these residual elements as a basis for nostalgia (which i see as detrimental), the group uses it to effectively proliferate itself as a constantly re-emerging culture, somehow avoiding the dominant. there are always exceptions, but generally i've noticed this group is very aware of itself, is very self-reflexive, and very critical of each component of itself.
