Goner Message Board / ???? / So now it's baby ducks.
Posted: Apr 17, 2007 1:57 pm
So I go home yesterday, pull in to the driveway, get out and notice six baby ducks walking down my street minding their own business. It was obvious the momma duck was nowhere around, these things were super tiny, and our block has at least 6 cats who would love a baby duck snack. So I got a box and went after them. They were surprisingly easy to catch.

I talked to a neighbor who said there was a momma around earlier and she had at least 10 ducklings. My guess is that a cat (or dog) chased her down and the tribe was force to split up. It's puzzling though because there is no body of water anywhere around. We live in a residential neighborhood with busy streets.

So now I have 6 baby ducks I don't know what to do with. I guess I'll call some vets/parks today.

I don't have the room for ducks. They won't eat and I'm worried about them. These are way too young to be away from mom.

I'm thinking maybe I can go wondering the ditches around my house. If I could catch mom & the rest, I know pleanty of good ponds I could take em to. But I imagine catching the full-grown momma duck would be impossible. Shit, I don't even know where to start looking.

deep fry them. baby ducks are succulent.

I am super excited for you and jealous too. Wood ducks are the cutest! And I have always wanted a pet duck. If you are smart, you'll make them think you are their mom and then they will follow you around in a line.
Posted: Apr 17, 2007 3:49 pm
Turns out they're Wood Ducks!

Once me and some friends were driving around and saw a duckling running along the side of the road. It was also a pretty busy road, and we were more worried about the thing being run over as opposed to being snatched up by another animal. We grabbed it and took it in the car, with the intention of finding a better place to release it. Turns out it wasn't a duck at all, it was a canadian goose! This lady we knew took it to a pond somewhere, and apparently there were other geese right there and gathered it in. Pretty touching eh?
Posted: Apr 17, 2007 3:53 pm
Are they really made of wood?
Posted: Apr 17, 2007 3:54 pm
Yeah, like the new leg you're gonna hafta get!

I gotta get some meal worms from pet-smart.
Posted: Apr 17, 2007 5:04 pm
man i want some liverwurst.
Posted: Apr 17, 2007 5:32 pm
This is all too weird. I had a dream last night that I was in some drug house and they had all these ducklings running around that looked all malnourished and unhealthy. I was gonna call animal control, but then I woke up. They looked just like yours, except they were about the size of a nickel.
I feel much better about the current state of ducklings in the world after reading all this.
Posted: Apr 17, 2007 5:42 pm
I wanna rub 'em all over my punim.
Posted: Apr 17, 2007 5:48 pm
bvalentine, didn't you acquire some baby ducks at around this time last year, too?
Posted: Apr 17, 2007 5:49 pm
or chickens?
Posted: Apr 17, 2007 6:20 pm
Went home at lunch. One duckling was dead, the rest seemed ok. I was able to feed them all meal worms. All but one ate really good and seem active. I am worried about the one, hope he doesn't die.
Posted: Apr 17, 2007 6:20 pm
momma duck won't want them after you touch them. gonna have put baby powder or something on all of them.
Posted: Apr 17, 2007 6:22 pm
or chickens?

Yeah, I had two chickens my girlfriend brought home. Turns out they both were roosters. A month ago they started cock-a-doodle-dooing all day (starting at 4am). So we gave those to the AG museum.
Posted: Apr 17, 2007 6:23 pm
momma duck won't want them

Well, it being a wood duck she could be anywhere (woods, brush, under a house, in a tree), I doubt I'll find her.

Ummm, it's a whole differnet animal? I love duckies too, but if you ever tasted Chinese roast duck you'd go apeshit crazy over how delicious it is. Chicken ain't got nothin on no duck.

Finding orphaned baby ducks this time of year is pretty common across the USA. Stupid people buy them as "easter presents" for the kids or girlfriends, and then, if they don't die within the week, toss 'em out.

I say, you should kill 'em all (humanely of course) and then make doll pillows and doll quilts out of their feathers. Super-kute!

O.k. Baby Duck Update Night 2.

We rigged a 100 watt bulb up and it's made all the difference in the world. The duckies like being warm. They are eating pretty good to. Meal Worms is all we can get em to eat. They like being fed with tweezers. They also like drinking water off the tip of your finger. Their day consist of: eating, splashing, grooming, sleeping, and chirping for more food.
Posted: Apr 18, 2007 3:16 pm
i love you, man.
Posted: Apr 18, 2007 3:26 pm
yeah this is making me want some ducklings. maybe I will go to the park today and kidnap some.

this made me want some ducklings. once they're grown, you can get a pre-meal blowjob from your dinner!

Take a pitcher of 'em all together, preese.

Cute! Good luck, BV!
Posted: Apr 18, 2007 4:20 pm
Nebraska to the rescue!

I used to have a SERIOUS chicken habit.

Put a little water in a jar lid. The ducks might not know how to drink it - you have to show them by pretending your finger is a duck and peck at the water. Ducks are stuuuupid (meant in the nicest way) and will mimick you.

And you need to get some duck feed. They have different nutritional needs. Look up farm stores in your yellow pages - TSC, Orscheln's, something like that.
Posted: Apr 18, 2007 4:24 pm
get some duck feed

We have some starter feed. They aint studyin it. Meal worms are where it's at. Chrissy tried red worms too... they didnt like those.
Posted: Apr 18, 2007 6:10 pm

Went home at lunch. Chrissy was feed them. 4 are happy as can be. 1 isn't looking so good, not eating, slipping through the cracks. I hate what I'll probably come home to. Finding a dead baby duck is the ultimate bummer. I don't recomend this to anybody.

I wish they'd eat something besides meal worms. They sell em in really small containers. We are going through two tubs a day. We tried everything else, it's the only thing they'll eat.

hello...this is chrissy. since, billy won't give yall an update, i will. all the duckies are great. they are soooo cute. they like to fight over the mealworms. there is this one who is really bad & steals worms from all the other babies. i like him cuz he's the bad boy of the group.

they're learning to dip their worms in water to make them slide down easier & they've started eating the duck feed. oh & they sell these baby crickets at petsmart...they are tiny. we let a whole bunch of those loose in their box and they went crazy chasing them. the bad one ate most them. he's greedy.

we can't find our camera, but when we do billy will post some more pics.
Posted: Apr 21, 2007 3:38 am
oh yeah, we did lose the one who didn't look so good. it was very sad, but it will be easier to make sure the other ones are getting enough to eat. :(

How are the ducklings?
Posted: May 1, 2007 3:28 pm
Alright, sorry folks. I lost the digi-cam at the wrong time. But now I (JUST NOW) I found it.

Ducks are doing great! I built them a pin outside to run around and be ducks in. They have a rubbermaid style swiming pool to kick it in. As they get a little bigger I'll get them some better enviroment. The pin is great but they can't stay out there unsupervised (because of cats).

Most of their day is still spent inside in the make-shift incubator. They've gotten bigger, more lively, and more hungry. At night they drive me fucking crazy.

They're not as friendly as you'd think a baby duck would be. They're sweet and all to each other, but they are still terrified of us. That's to be expected though as I'm sure it's ingrained into their wild duck dna. Gratitude would be a nice duck trait though.

Now that I've found my camera... I'll take some video and pics tonight. Stay tuned.

A duck walks into a 7-11 and says "Give me some chapstick, put it on my bill!" But the cash register attendee doesn't speak English and cannot understand him. He does, however, question whether his God is punishing him because as all people know, Ducks cannot speak, however, this hallucination must be punishment for a horrid misdeed. The employee breaks down into tears and begins reciting prayer. The duck, slightly miffed, walks out, pondering why he'd need chapstick anyway, since he has no lips.

This here is Jabber-Jaw. He is the biggest of the group. Here is a video of Jabber-Jaw not being too smart. The funny thing is, the rest of the ducks follow him around.

Here is a close up of them hangin out in the pool. It's not spectacular but you can see their feet kicking underwater.

Everybody is doing fine. Eating, pooping, and doing what ducks do. They've just about trippled in size. Compare Jabber-Jaw with this picture from mid April. Although they all started about the same size, two of the ducks are much bigger than the other two. We assume them to be two boys and two girls.

After work today I am going to try and find them a bigger pool to swim in.
Posted: May 7, 2007 3:05 pm
I wish I could get better pictures but they get a little tense whenever we get close. When they're relaxed and playing it's super cute though. They like to go all the way under water, thrash around, and then jump up with their long necks extended and flap their nubs. It's cute.

Jabber-Jaw is the only one that's has a name so far. Chrissy gave him that name because of the way he eats (rapidly moves head back & forth while to & fro and up & down). I suppose the others could be named in a future "name my ducks" Goner post. We have so many animals that we've gotten lazy on naming them. There are two cats in my house who (both) are still refered to as "kitten".

I love it! I wonder if they still make the baby pools with the slide? That would be hysterical..

We have to baby sit them the whole time they're out there. I'm gonna have to work on something more solid this weekend. They're too big and messy to be inside and they're too small to be outside. When we had chickens, the cats didn't fuck with em once they got big enough to freak out.

chicken wire?

alicja t had a duck... she'd take it for walks. pretty awesome.

she eventually took it to a pond where ducks liked to hang... pretty sure she got it when it was grown, though.

wow, I just saw this, yeah, I had a duck, got it when it was tiny and yellow and the poops very small as well. I had to teach it to fly by running with it and pushing it into the air while still holding it's underbelly. I got a baby pool for it, but I had to change the water every day. You could bring them to the neighborhood in Memphis that I took my duck...it was very happy and got a girlfriend right off the bat, a little mallard. I think if they go to a lake with semi-people friendly ducks then they will learn how to fly by watching the other ducks, and they inherently know how to swim.

Ducks are gone. We stumbled upon a vet that runs a wood-duck re-release program. Fuck, I had all I could take.

Why not to have ducks:

Fuckers stink
Daily drives out to the bait shop
Constant loud grating chirps
Constant attention (4 hours per day, everyday)
Rarely did anything cool
Daily complete washing of duck quarters
Plus they completely hated us

I now have no reserves of eating or hunting ducks. Fuck a duck.

If you want a duck... get one of the white domestic meat ducks. They're the sweet ones you can train. These had to go.

Bye ducks.......

Sorry to disappoint ya'll. But... glad it's over.

Don't be sorry, Billy. You guys did a good thing by taking them in when they were too little to fend for theyselfs.
