the way jack o does "chills & fever" should close the door on covering that song. excellent

He covers it EXACTLY the way The Serfmen covered it. It's on Garage Punk Unknowns vol. 8. He jacked their entire arrangment including every little scream and whimper. Theirs is a perfectly original take on it, his is a watered down imitation of theirs.

I'll say my favorite cover version (maybe ever) is The Serfmen's version of Ronnie Love's "Chills and Fever."

Green Manalishi (with the two-pronged crown) - Judas Priest

Right back at you John! The only version I've ever heard of that song can touch Priest's was one time when I saw Melvins. The best Fleetwood Mac version is on that "Madison Blues Live" CD. Downright crushing.

The Gun Club - Preaching the Blues is killer

Gotta real soft spot for Chilton's version of Surfer Girl, the one where he goes "Little surfer... I can't remember the words..." then sings like a fucking angel (on downs)...

Recently, I've also been digging The Replacement's version of Cruella de Ville, which is weird, cuz Westerberg just did the soundtrack to that cartoon flick, Open Season!

One of my very fave covers is The Lyres' versh of You'll Never Do It Baby, dead brutal rhythm, also the Morlochs' take on By My Side, which even outdoes the Aussie original for sheer bonkers bravado...

The Prisoners' version of Hush (only available on the Don't let The Hope Close Down comp LP) is a long term rave, as is The Saints' take on The Allusions' Gypsy Woman...

Ohhh, there's so many!!!!

BTW, sorry to be pedantic, but the original meaning of 'cover' was a version of a song released at virtually the same time as the original, to mop up its sales - e.g. Pat Boone covering Little Richard...

If the 'cover' wasn't released at the same time as the original, it's just a 'version'...

Many thanks to the infatigable Art Fein for pointing this out on his awesome blog, www.sofein.com

The Gories version of Ray Charles' "Early In The Morning" is particularly great, and much heavier than their version of Mose Allison's "Smashed," which is also great, but not transcendent like the other.

Woah, thanks for that vid brad excrement! Now that I've heard that version, the Gories' seems less great than it did. I thought they arranged it from Ray Charles', which isn;'t that great, and made it great. It's really just a stipped down version of Louis Jordan's though. Well I"ll be...
