The grass ain't greener buddy. Save some money by stay'n put.
Posted: Apr 9, 2007 7:39 pm

Santa Fe, N.M. you can't go wrong! Mellow established art scene/community that doesn't have to try to be N.Y.C.,Cormac McCarthy lives around there somewhere, great snow to play in at Taos and world class cuisine.Plus alot of sunny days there. Maybe a little pricey compared to Cleveland but hey it's not Akron. But a word to the wise consider future world water shortages if plan to move to the high desert ,things will be interesting years to come in the southwest with soluable water.

ATL worked for me.
Posted: Apr 9, 2007 7:50 pm

yeah someone else suggest ATL to me too, but i dont really know anyone there.

umm the grass HAS to be greener than cleveland, seriously.
Posted: Apr 9, 2007 8:05 pm

Columbus.

It's not far, it's inexpensive, plenty of bands & clubs, work's easy to find, rent & housing is reasonable, (The house behind mine has a price tag of $114,000 for 3 bedrooms & 2 car attached garage), the people are very approachable, Scott's Antique fairs come 6 times/year...

Santa Fe, N.M. you can't go wrong!

Yeah you can. Expensive, everything looks exactly the same, and too many fake hippies. Gross. Sweet if you wanna pick up some turquoise bracelets though.

Cleveland but hey it's not Akron

Heh. Armpit of the armpit. Butt of joke of punchline butt.

The thing is, Akron's kinda hip now! Whoda thunk it?

(Still couldn't pay me enough to live there again. Or the Cleave for that matter. Or Columbus. Really Ohio, I guess.)

All saying, I sympathize witcha. 6 1/2 year penance I endured. 18 yrs for the whole damn state. Gotta pay the piper sometime.

i moved from pittsburgh to cleveland for no real reason.

it's been over a year. i think i put my time in. get me the fuck out of here.!!!
Posted: Apr 9, 2007 8:41 pm

doesn't have to try to be N.Y.C.

NYC...it doesn't have to try...
Posted: Apr 9, 2007 8:45 pm | Edited by: bazooka joe

NYC is cool! I actually went out and partied Friday night and had the best time ever! Of course I avoided all the art rock fags that usually keep me indoors and did my own thing...
Posted: Apr 9, 2007 9:23 pm

so you're sick of cleveland cuz its april and probably still cold as fuck, your electric and heating bills for the winter were more than your rent and it will probably snow again?

give it a couple months to get over the depression!

if you moved for no real reason, you could always move back. i'm guessing all your friends are there n stuff
Posted: Apr 9, 2007 9:25 pm

no thats not why i'm sick of cleveland [those it does help with the sickness]

there are many reasons. there is pretty much no reason to stay.

i can usually find jobs and make friends pretty easily, so i am not too worried about that. but Ohio sucks, plain and simple.

i put my time in, i gotta get OUT.

don't want to stay in one place too long, ya know?
Posted: Apr 9, 2007 9:50 pm

I want to move to Austin or Boulder. I guess I'd better start making some money...
Posted: Apr 9, 2007 9:59 pm

don't want to stay in one place too long, ya know?

are you trying to tell us you're a criminal on the lam?

hahaha --- i spent many a day, week, month and fractions of years in cleveland and other parts of ohio by choice. there's alot about it that sucks, but all in all, i like cleveland.

every place you go is gonna have the same kind of problems.
Posted: Apr 9, 2007 11:28 pm

Boulder.

They're gay.

except for the weather & most of the people being douchebags, cleveland isn't such a horrible place.

cheap rent/real estate, lots of music venues, good antique stores & affordable flights to occasionally recharge in other places. you can get by on very little money here.

i've been to lots of cities & states. most of them suck in some way or another. it's just a matter of degree.

at least cleveland has personality & history.
Posted: Apr 10, 2007 3:49 am

and all the above can be said about pittsburgh too.

i actually like pittsburgh. it's one of my favorite cities.
Posted: Apr 10, 2007 4:02 am

ugh. cleveland. i am not the biggest fan of ohio myself either. i lived in cincinnati and it was a festering hellhole. now i did take a shine to columbus, but i got sick of the midwest weather and opted to move back to memphis instead. i love memphis. it's nice and warm, the people are nice, the food is delicious and the music fantastic. the only thing i don't really like here is the crime, but i'm so used to it by now that almost nothing scares me. if i was going to have kids though, i'd probably leave since the school system here is the pits. but if you're single and childless like me, it's great!

you're talking about williamsburg, right?
Posted: Apr 10, 2007 6:08 am | Edited by: red eyed willie

Both places these days I guess, but it'd be harder to find a cocapelli carving or a Jackelope in Williamsburg.

Yep.

Least there was a couple killer acts.

move to harrisburg and be bored stiff wit me!

i actually lived in Harrisburg when I was little!

yeah i understand that cleveland has some cool elements to it as does pittsburgh [i love that place] but i want to try somewhere new.

i'll be visiting most of the major west coast cities in june so that might help

Oh my stars and garters!

Boulder.

really?
why?

A few reasons. Mostly 'cause I'm the "outdoorsy" type. Then there's the scenery. Also, a huge immigrant population (I'll be teaching ESL starting this year). Proximity to other areas of interest... Same with Austin really.

I don't have a thing against Memphis, it's a great place to live, but I've been here a long time and there's a whole lot to see out there!
Posted: Apr 10, 2007 6:03 pm

west coast cities to aviod, all the major ones!
Tacoma, yeah we all heard the bad but,the city has plenty o cheap rent.
Astoria, Oregon kind of creepy but the city is laid out like San Fran. only alot smaller.
PDX,well I live here now and I already promised not to talk anymore shit about it on the goner board,,,don't move here!,,,,slip,,, sorry.
Posted: Apr 10, 2007 6:17 pm

yeah the only ones i will be passing thru will be all the major ones.

what's your opinion on philadelphia?
Posted: Apr 10, 2007 6:24 pm

philly is full of hipsters and it's $$$

why not just move back to harrisburg, i'll get you a job at the DMV!

2 1/2 hours from NYC
1 1/2 hours from Philly & Baltimore
2 hours from DC
4 ? hours from Pittsburgh

it's cheap, there's lots of jobs AND bazooka joe and christine 16 will be moving here soon...party-time!
Posted: Apr 10, 2007 6:27 pm

chicago's pretty cool, way better than philly, but it's too cold for me.

I'm looking at Austin, Raleigh, and Memphis

Raleigh and Memphis here!!

I need to get the hell out of Ohio.

I lived in Raliegh and most of my familiy is from Raliegh - Chapel Hill area so I get a heart string pulled when I think of Raliegh.Never been to Austin but have been in Texas and I got nervous being down there, but I

Also consider Fort Collins, CO and Laramie, WY. Both are are more affordable and have fewer sanctimonious Subaru/North Face outdoor yuppie types than Boulder. The Front Range has the best climate in the US if you like some seasonal change. Austin is great, but the weather is about the same as Memphis, just hotter.
Posted: Apr 10, 2007 6:47 pm

But I vote on the left side. Philly my wife and I were considering Philly for the Northeast but everyone that post online I saw about Philly is that its kinda harsh. Like harsh in the NewYork sterotype, like"Whatta you fucking looking at!!!"sorta shit, but maybe just south philly.Have you thought about a Minne/St. Paul. I heard they got great social service programs there. Also down south def. check out ATL. I always heard great things about Atl.stay out of florida
Posted: Apr 10, 2007 6:51 pm

Reno.
Posted: Apr 10, 2007 6:52 pm

yeah i would avoid Florida like the plague,

MN would be cool, my record-label mates are there but i would freeze my tits off i think.

a handful of people have mentioned ATL, i wonder if i'd be cool enough for it? haha.

i only say philly cause my brothers live there so i would have cheap rent. but i am kinda sick of my family anyways....

keeeeeep thinking
Posted: Apr 10, 2007 6:59 pm

Seriously, Reno is really kick ass. You have all 4 seasons there, great outdoors spots like Tahoe and Virginia City just a ew minutes away, San Fran is only four hours away, cheap rent, casinos... I love it there.
Posted: Apr 10, 2007 7:02 pm

Except it is brown. BROWN.
Posted: Apr 10, 2007 7:04 pm

Reno is brown? I don't remember that part.
Posted: Apr 10, 2007 7:06 pm

Yeah, since it's in a natural bowl, you get pretty bad temperature inversions during the Fall/Winter that makes for a nice smog effect. Come Summer, it remains brown as the desert has nothing going for it. It's also not as cheap as you may remember it.

I think there must be some polar switch in Reno/Vegas people that makes them move to the opposite.
Posted: Apr 10, 2007 7:25 pm

Reno is fucking depressing.

Don't move any where for the music "scene." I've done it. Bad idea.
Posted: Apr 10, 2007 7:30 pm

Reno is fucking depressing.

I dunno, I could get laid there at the drop of a hat. I think you should say,

Reno is fucking desperation.
Posted: Apr 10, 2007 7:37 pm

Send me some pics and dental records and I'll get back to you.

Oh, and pick up yr hat, it's lying in the gutter.
Posted: Apr 10, 2007 7:44 pm

Our drummer is leaving us to move back to Reno!?! I guess he has better luck getting laid there.
Posted: Apr 10, 2007 7:49 pm

Avoid Florida like the plague if you hate sun, beach, outdoor activities like tennis, fishing, outdoor shuffleboard, frisbee, hoops, affordable housing, cheap stiff drinks, kitsch, great estate sales, cheap stuff, seafood and good produce. If you are pretty self-sufficient, married, secure in a slow pace of life and like all of the above, certain parts of Florida are pretty great. Notice, I said "certain parts".

If all that is important to you at this stage in life is being around a lot of really cool people or a "scene", being able to buy some expensive and really cool stuff easily (or at least look at a lot of expensive cool stuff you may not be able to always afford) and a unreproachable music scene...choose somewhere else for sure.
Posted: Apr 10, 2007 7:50 pm

I disagree, I don\\\'t think Philly is expensive at all. Yeah we have lots of hipsters, but what city doesn\\\'t now a days. I live in West Philadelphia where we have lots on nice parks, cheap rent, great food and good bars. And man, I just got a good job that I am way unqualified for. Philly rules!
Posted: Apr 10, 2007 7:56 pm

more power to ya buddy.

i've never been to west philly...only south (lame) and north (deadly)

if someone wouldv'e asked me my opinion about philly 10 years ago i wouldv'e said it was awesome but there's never anything going on there it seems. (except hannibal playing there recently!)
Posted: Apr 10, 2007 7:58 pm

West Philadelphia

Say "What's up" do the Fresh Prince for me!!

I've overheard several people talking about how Philly is "the East Coast Portland" which is pretty strange.
Posted: Apr 10, 2007 8:01 pm

fla is just not my cup of tea. but no i am not interested in living somewhere solely for a scene of any kinda. i like what i like and i go find it when i need to.

i have a place to live in philly cheap, i have family there but no friends yet or a job. i know its a great location only 1 hour from the beach and a million other cities and they have good eateries as well..

decisions decisions!
Posted: Apr 10, 2007 8:11 pm

fla is just not my cup of tea.

I hear you, everyone is different and at different stages in their lives, not to mention, cities change. I have lived in so many places since I got outta college eons ago. I'd never live in Chicago again but it was fun as hell for me 12 years ago. I grew up in Memphis and lived there in the 90's too and though I will always love that place, it is funny to hear all the people contemplating moving there now...that would have been unthinkable not that long ago!
Posted: Apr 10, 2007 8:13 pm

yeah that is funny! I met a cool girl from Atlanta living in Pittsburgh last weekend. It's weird to me that people move TO pittsburgh but I love being from there....

i'm a youngin' i have time to move around i suppose and i have nothing grounding me to anywhere so.... i'm a nomad
Posted: Apr 10, 2007 8:28 pm

It's weird to me that people move TO pittsburgh but I love being from there

Precisely!

Move around when you are young and enjoy; trust me, it gets a little harder when you get older, unfortunately!
Posted: Apr 10, 2007 8:32 pm

What about St. Thomas or St. John? I almost worked at this eco-resort on St. John but decided to return to reality. Pretty cool place if you're going nowhere fast. I also wanted, at one time, to work/live on one of these, but got more attached to money and got old.
Posted: Apr 10, 2007 8:39 pm

move to philly with your brothers, save some cash and take a trip to atlanta to see if you like it.
Posted: Apr 10, 2007 8:41 pm

anywhere but here
Posted: Apr 10, 2007 8:51 pm

I have a friend who is a music director for a huge West Coast cruise line...loves it. 6 months on the boats, 6 months doing session shit in LA. Not a bad reality for him.
Posted: Apr 10, 2007 8:52 pm

brad, i thought you loved it there?
Posted: Apr 10, 2007 8:53 pm

i think he's telling her to fuck off.
Posted: Apr 10, 2007 8:54 pm

oh!
Posted: Apr 10, 2007 8:55 pm

Yeah, like "hey heir lick, anywhere but here!"
Posted: Apr 10, 2007 8:57 pm

That Philly Hannibal show sucked anyway.
Posted: Apr 10, 2007 8:59 pm

yeah i do love it here, thats why i dont want any goddamned outsiders moving here and fucking the place up. stay the hell away!
Posted: Apr 10, 2007 9:00 pm

bradx is lucky. i bet they don't have anything that resembles Golden Flamer where he's from.
Posted: Apr 10, 2007 9:08 pm

bonkers - you don't like hannibal???

brad - i doubt ramonatalie wants to move to yer town so don't worry

bazooka - what's a golden flamer...a fag covered in gold lamet? i'm confused
Posted: Apr 10, 2007 9:08 pm

that's heir lick's "band."
Posted: Apr 10, 2007 9:08 pm

i dont know what golden flamer is, but the best restauraunt in town is called the golden flame. 24 hours serving greasy goodness, breakfast anytime. its in an old a&w building.
Posted: Apr 10, 2007 9:13 pm

i love greasy breakfast food. a diner isn't a diner unless it serves breakfast 24/7.

that's heir lick's "band."

i haven't seen 'em yet. do you think he'd get mad if i threw gold glitter on him sunday?
Posted: Apr 10, 2007 9:17 pm

I like his records just fine. The show on the other hand was a total disaster. I know he is old, but he only had four songs in him that night. Seriously, 15 minutes tops. I missed most of his set just takin a piss break.

I've overheard several people talking about how Philly is "the East Coast Portland" which is pretty strange.

There's alot of 'bike culture' in Philly which I'm guessing is where that comparison comes from. I used to hang out there a decent amount and liked it cause it's dirt cheap compared to New York. Maybe prices have gone up in the past 5 years. I haven't been going much lately. But at Bob & Barbara's, I used to get a shot and a beer for a couple bucks. We also got away with a lot more bad behavior on the streets in Philly. You can't get away with much in New York anymore, so going there was always a little debaucherous vacation.
Posted: Apr 10, 2007 9:37 pm

Yeah, Joe! Finally that Diggler alter ego is comin out!

Yeah, we're a "band." We only played 3 shows this week. I'm just gearing up the self-promotion. This board is rife with, so can I join in?

Oh, by the way, we ain't garage punk, or soul-shout, or anything groovy. We just destroy and I will bite your face off and you vill love it!

My day is brighter now that I gave ol' sourpuss Joe something to complain about. How's that tower, Rapunzel?

do you think he'd get mad if i threw gold glitter on him sunday?

Oh no, I actually chastised the crowd on Sunday for not pouring beer on me while I crawled through them. Yeah, Billyburg loft party. Hey, it was 4:30 in the afternoon.

so what other shows do you go to?

you don't have a lick of evil in your band. I heard it all on myspace. maybe you should get a guitar player, or tell your guitar player to stop playing bass lines.
Posted: Apr 10, 2007 9:46 pm | Edited by: RamoNatalie

i refuse to fuck off.
but i dont know where you live dude, so i wont try to move there and bother you
Posted: Apr 10, 2007 9:50 pm

Dude, you've never seen us. You've never seen me play. You have no idea.

The guitar's are like that on purpose. Yeah, and myspace really gives you a 360 view of the band. I'm glad we're your new pet hate project cuz except for rare 45s, you don't know shit about music, especially playing it. Your idea of music is trapped in a time capsule buried beneath a compost heap. LET IT BREATHE.

Are you comin Sunday to Don Pedro's, or do you have to do your laundry? Better watch out, Fun Police are gonna getcha.

At least see us, then you'll hate it, and your opinion will be slightly more valid.
Posted: Apr 10, 2007 9:51 pm

you don't have a lick of evil

Also, never said we were "evil" (that's fucking gay), just that we destroy, which we do. Confidence feels good.

don't bite me!!!

Not at the show at least.
Posted: Apr 10, 2007 9:55 pm

it must be easy to destroy models and trannys. but please keep trying to convince me! it's really fucking funny.

The guitar's are like that on purpose.

uhh, yeah. I know.

ramonatalie - i think brad lives in wisconsin. don't mind him, he's grumpy.

it's sarah! i haven't owned legwarmers since i was 9. i'll go knit some quick.

Oh, and it's very imprtant to me! You are our audience!

Man, your sense of humor sucks so bad when it comes to yourself. You really gotta work on that. And understanding other people's sarcasm. You can dish it out, but you cannot take it. Sign of a weak man.

And, doofus, it's the bassplayer playing guitar lines essentially, but I guess you can't suss that out cuz it's not scratchy and I'm not yelling about chicken bones.

And, of course, you are that one white guy in the world who truly understands all that. Truly.

Well, you, for no reason, "attacked" (a limp wristed slap admittedly) me and my band for no reason. You like doing that. I pointed out where and why you were wrong. Why should I just lie down and except your "wisdom"? It's funny how people seem to be "afraid" of you or Diggler. I took a lot of unnecessary shit from the two of you for over a year. Did I ever cry about it? Fuck no, I sent it right back, funnier than it came at me. So, why all of a sudden talk shit about my band? Because I've mentioned it recently? Because it doesn't jive with your ham-fisted musical taste and boring fucking lifestyle.

Basically, I'm just sick of reading you posts on every goddamn thing, and you're lame "thing" with Hayden was laughable and totally stupid and annoying and so bitch-like (no matter how you try to dress it up) and it was probably the highlight of the last 5 years of your life.

Sorry, Sarah, sick of hearing this guy's shit. He really acts like some sort of Oracle of Punk Rock, which is Irony #1 - 1000. Glad you don't like my band. We'd be doing something wrong if you did. In other news, I've given up on the one-man-death-metal-band, as I don't have a double bass rig, and the duct tape peels off from the drumsticks too easily on my shoes when I hit the two large pots I set up.
I'm moving towards a sensitive singer/songwriter phase now, but I'm still playing the double-neck electric because the lasers mounted to the headstocks look pretty awesome.
So, don't move to Memphis.

I like to fish so I think Florida rules. I went out at night and saw a guy catch a shark off the side of our boat. I forget where it was, maybe near the Cape, but you get to go out and drink out of a keg and for three hours you only pay something like 40 bucks. Oh, St. Petersburg and Key West rule too. I guess unlike the rest of you I think Philly and certain parts of Florida are some of the better places for living.

I'm in the same predicament. I have at least a year left before I can scram, but I'm looking at either of the coasts. Pockets of the south seem cool, but I also think there are just as many dead ends down there as there are up here in Chicago. Probably gonna try NYC in Spring of '08. If not sooner.

Oh, and whatever you do, heed this:

Anything is better than the midwest
Posted: Apr 11, 2007 11:22 am

Bullshit - I like it here better than anywhere else. Florida is like the worst place in the galaxy. Columbus would be on my short list of places I'd move to if I left the state. I like going to Chicago, but I'd hate living there. I like Austin, but it's too hot down there. Anywhere could suck and anywhere could be great, it's up to you, sensei.
Posted: Apr 11, 2007 1:40 pm

hahaha. yeah. agreed. anything IS better than the midwest. i'll probably take Goner Rhea's expert advice: move to Philly with my brother and visit places like ATL to see if i like 'em.

Yeah, Lulu, what's eatin' at you regarding Ohio?

Anything is better than the midwest

I couldn't agree less. It's affordable & there's enough to do that plenty of notorious Columbus rockers have died in the past decade. I put up plenty of bands that have a pretty good opinion of Ohio when they leave. I am certainly not saying it's the be-all/end-all place to live, but there's plenty to do in the midwest.
Posted: Apr 12, 2007 1:39 pm

A few reasons. Mostly 'cause I'm the "outdoorsy" type. Then there's the scenery. Also, a huge immigrant population (I'll be teaching ESL starting this year). Proximity to other areas of interest... Same with Austin really.

Boulder has some of the most restrictive politics in the country. Immigrants don't live there. Just go to Denver and there will be plenty of immigrants, scenery, and access to the outdoors without the snobbery.

Again. Don't move to Florida if you think the Midwest rules. Well, actually that isn't true. I see more Midwestern state license plates down here than any other area of the country...and guess what, sourpuss, not all of them are "useless" old people, just regular pale Michiganders et al.

I seriously don't get all the underinformed smackdowns on Florida. It is one thing if you've lived down here and you despise it, but a couple of vacations or spring breaks in some condo somewhere? Uh, not enough info. It would be like me saying Green Bay sucks harder than anywhere else--totally meaningless because all I have are vague ideas about the place, though I can say I would probably not like living in GB.

Sure, there is at least one town in this state that just out n out sucks (like everywhere in our lovely country), but last I checked, that was my personal opinion based on lots of experiences there...yes, I am speaking of Jacksonville.

St. Pete is fine for me and plenty of others--plenty to ridicule, but I try to spend most of my time and attention on the stuff I actually enjoy...which was the point of moving here.

Yeah, Lulu, what's eatin' at you regarding Ohio?

I don't know. Maybe it's the weather. I mean, we went from 80 degrees to snow overnight last week. It's fucking with my head. I can't find a job, my car (that I bought six months ago) is fucked, and the public transportation system is pretty much non-existent, or rarely useful, at best. Everything looks the same to me anymore. There is not a single good radio station, and the tape player in my car is also broken... which alone is enough of a reason to be pissed. Plus, most people are assholes. If I could at least narrow my list, that would be cool. Anybody have a tape deck they can spare?

Sorry to spew negativity... but Banned's Columbus is not MY Columbus, or probably ANYONE'S Columbus on a day to day basis. Not that he wouldn't love living here, obviously some people do... Also, Banned despises Green Bay from what I understand, which is probably making other towns look like heaven... and I do relate to THAT at least.

FUCK!! 10 months without a real job (while searching madly non-stop) is really beginning to exhaust me. Midwestern life is just grating on my last fucking nerve right now. I have no pride in the suckage of it all.

Most of this seems to be about weather. I can't understand why you would live through winter if you hate the cold or hot & humid if you can't stand the heat. All you have to do is pack up and leave. I just can't stand hot & humid, 2-3 months a year is enough for me. The people make the place though, ultimately, and I like midwesterners the best overall (southerners tend to be nice folks, too, and obviously there are swell people everywhere).

other than that, NYC is cool. it really is. I saw an amazing Munkasci photo exhibit friday night and a wonderful german film, The Lives of Others, on sunday, and then ate ethiopian food (which gave me indigestion).

where else could you do that in one weekend? BERLIN.

but seriously, NYC is always delightful at the onset of spring.

I need warm and sunny and humid doesn't bother me cos I grew up with that crap...don't get me wrong, it sucks, but I don't really freak out over the horribleness anymore after living through so many Memphis summers.

And while no one, not even me, will say that St. Pete is as obviously "cool" as Portland, it has its other charms that for my interests, more than make up for the serious lack of "hip" on most days.

I need to start a list of all the stupid ass store names down here; absolutely ridiculous--VERY Goner jokey suggestions, but they are REAL!

Example: Pretty nice florist="Ka-Bloom!"

lula, move to chicago!

Crap, not if she's worried about cold or rad weather changes. Sure it's not Denver, but they went through the whole warm spell, then snow during a baseball game. Cold has it's place for me. I think it's good for me personall to experience all 4 seasons.

Plus, most people are assholes.

I am sorry to hear that. That's one of the reasons I really like Ohio 'cause most of the people with whom I've dealt have been decent.

I don't have any interest in moving, but I wouldn't mind TN if I had to move. There's NHL hockey there, no state income tax, it's gotta be warmer, plus, it would be easier for Jack Stands to pick on me in person.
