According to the douchebag locals we talked to Slipknot started out playing there. Can't beat that for authenticity.

one time long long ago i had to go to des moines for work and it just so happened that the catholic boys and mystery girls were touring the midwest at the same time so i made some calls and booked them at hairy marys for when i'd be in town (i thought that was a total coup) -- anyways, it was the dead of summer and the AC broke at the club so they canceled the show. Nick G never got the chance to trash my room at the Embassy Suites.

anyways, i generally have to go to des moines for work once a year

I spent my teens and twenties in Des Moines and Ames, Iowa- a nearby college town. My band played at Hairy Mary's with a band that contained future members of Slipknot. That band was also terrible.

DM's music scene is cyclical. It used to be that they'd have a run of good shows and some decent local bands every 3 years or so. Unfortunately, they are in a 5-year lull right now.

Iowa City was always more happening than DM, but it appears to stink equally right now. When going through Iowa, forget about music and concentrate on the fried pork tenderloin sandwiches.
