nanne seriously, you keep insulting people that are not flag waving, anything america does is great patriots. we like our situation in our country, we for the most part are ok with the people who are around us (as much as one would be in most any country, because every country is certainly filled mostly with dipshits), and we have fun laughing at you and your agony. i'm not talking about whatever physical pain you are in, but the your stupid hate filled anger towards anybody that disagrees with you. getting this upset about the way a board is moderated is complete lunacy. just shut up about jack (who is a great fucking guy by the way!) and fuck off will ya. i mean for fuck's sake.

This is all a mystery to me.
You people are happy the RS is playing as a back up band for Weiss on a retarded show as Conan?
And some of you even think they gonna get new fans from other scenes and grow totally big after that show?
Ever watched the people who are IN the audience? I take it that's about the same folks who watch that show at home.
And they gonna buy Too Much Guitar after Conan?
You people are living in la la land.
Personally this all sounds like a major insult to one of my favourite bands, but since they seem to happy about it too I'll just say: Sorry for being so 'European' about this, but all I can say is: je-SUS!!
The last band here who pulled that off was Deep Purple, in 1972, doing Speed King at Vicky Leandros' Chistmass Special on German TV.

I think there have been quite a few artists who have appeared on Conan and have coincidentally become more popular afterwards......

Hell, Tom Waits was on the Merv Griffin show in 1976....

I am really hoping the cable company doesn't cut off the previous tenants' service before Tuesday night. Five weeks with free basic cable and this is probably the first decent thing that's been on.

So, is Mary Weis playin Southpaw with RS this weekend? I heard she wasn't???!!!

conan is on NBC - you don't need cable for that.... unless you need cable for reception... in which case... rabbit ears would be a wise investment right now

It's a little ironic that Mary's TV appearance coincides with the 37th anniversary of Mary Ann Ganser of The Shangri Las' death from a barbiturate od or encephalitis depending on who you ask.
Posted: Mar 13, 2007 3:35 pm

no no no no ,, me suggesting dtrain get kicked off the set has nothing to do with taking pictures or any nonsense like that. it has everything to do with adding to my entertainment in the comfort of my own home.

I aint got no pictures. I got to sit in the Conan chair last time I went to this. Till they (security) made me leave. It was back when Alex Chilton played. 8 or 9 years ago...maybe longer than that. 95ish?...

you should try to repeat that during the chris rock interview

Yeah, man. Sorry, but so far (just for me), the score is Stacye 1, Dangerous Game/Girl 0.
Again, I'm happy she's getting out. I'm glad the RS found this to be a great experience. I still love the Reigning Sound alot. But honestly, I'm going to let tonight's performance make up my mind on whether or not to buy the record after everything I've heard, seen and read so far.

Jay's playing tonight with the Ponys, too...

Posted: Mar 14, 2007 6:53 am

Did not get to meet Chris Rock.. The stage area is really small, but the rest of the hallways an stuff is huge so it's easy to get lost....

Got to meet muthafuckin MAX WEINBERG tho! He offered to get us cookies for some reason?!?!

Posted: Mar 14, 2007 9:39 am

mary ruined that song.

It sounded to me like more of a problem with the mix. I could barely hear her. She did sound a little winded though. But she IS 60 years old. Reigning Sound rules!!
Posted: Mar 14, 2007 1:34 pm

o.K. dirk diggler... It's all over, you can come out now! Here Boy!
Posted: Mar 14, 2007 2:08 pm

My 2 cents:

1- Great song but nobody but Greg should sing it. They should have picked one that suited her voice so she sounded like the voice of the Shangrilas.
2- Mix didn't help.
3- Very cool to see her and The Reigning Sound on TV.
4- Were the backing vocals ever rehearsed? Carol's were distracting and Greg's were inaudible.
5- Greg looked cool in the shades but what does it all mean?

It was cool but I guess I built it up in my mind too much. Still can't wait to pick up the record.

I tried to make it, but fell asleep around 9:30. OLD!

Performance was good but the mix was shit. Why is it so hard to get a good live mix on TV? It's not like they have a building full of sound professionals or anything.

Y'know, watching it back, it really wasn't that bad. I think I'm just used to hearing it a certain way now, and my brain's not letting me jump over it. Maybe the speed of it, I don't know.
Re-itterating from earlier, I'm glad both Mary and RS are happy to be doing it.

That was great! Really cool to see them all on Conan.

But I can't help wondering why Greg had the extra guitar. If he woulda broke a string, had he planned to swap em out in mid song?
Posted: Mar 14, 2007 6:33 pm

If he woulda broke a string, had he planned to swap em out in mid song?
maybe, but all i know is it tricked me into thinking they were going to play two songs.

Same here. I think if the guitar was a little louder and Mary had a little "Dutch Courage" before geting up there it would have been perfect.

Posted: Mar 14, 2007 7:28 pm

Her voice was spot on. What is everyone hearing? She's just got an older woman's range now.

And I would figure, if you're taping live you darn sure have a spare guitar within reaching distance.
Posted: Mar 14, 2007 7:32 pm

she's hitting the right notes but fails to deliver the subtle nuances that made it a great song.
Posted: Mar 14, 2007 7:33 pm

its her delivery thats lacking
Posted: Mar 14, 2007 7:47 pm

it would have been better if they hadnt chosen to have her sing that song. however, hearing how she butchered dont come back in that live video at least they chose a song she can actually sing in key, even if it is without any real feeling.
Posted: Mar 14, 2007 7:57 pm

Man that didnt sound anything like the Oblivians.
Posted: Mar 14, 2007 7:59 pm

If we took the audio of this performance back two years in the Wayback Machine and played it for anyone familiar with the original, they would say "This sounds like a transvestite trying to sing a Greg Cartwright song." And they would be right. The mix was shitty as hell but so was the vocal performance from Grandma Weiss. If I want to hear current rockers collaborating with their childhood idols I'll listen to the Probot album.

This thread is becoming more and more bizarre to me... maybe we could just do one of those bar graph poles and be done with it. It might go something like this?

Did you like the performance on Conan?

Did you think that Mary Weiss' voice was great or sucked?

Is it good for the Reigning Sound?

If a legendary singer wanted to record your songs but assholes on a message board thought it sucked would you fucking care?

Has every single fucking person given their opinion yet?
Posted: Mar 14, 2007 8:01 pm

probably not.

what do you think message boards are for?

All the talk about sining in key...

I remember hearing David Johansen on Fresh Air talking about NY Dolls covering Shangrilas. He said in the interview that (back in the day) everyone loved the Shangrilas, not because they could sing, but because they were cute girls who had fun rock-n-roll songs and it was always a good time. He specifically mentioned something about them not sining in key. So that aint nuthin new. Besides... who (especially here) gives a fuck? I thought it was pretty cool.

This thread is becoming more and more bizarre to me

right?

everyone seems to be living that groucho marx quip about not wanting to belong to a club that would have him as a member.

one of our own was on national tv. a living legend in pop music covered his song on national tv and covered several of his on a high profile record.

what's wrong with that again?

Uh... duh. It was the Oblivians right? I mean, they did change their name to Reigning Sound after Tim Warren stole the name, right? The only thing I'm confused about is that chick... I thought Jay Reatard played bass in The Oblivians. WEERD.

yeah man. i would probably have stood there forgetting the song
Posted: Mar 14, 2007 8:12 pm

hey wait! i have yet to declare whether or not this performance was crucial. results are still being tabulated in the Posi-Machine.

although it's a no-brainer that DTrain and Max Weinberg in the same room at the same time is very stuff crucial is made of (cookies???)

I just wish Ned Diggler was here to appreciate it with us.

there is nothing wrong with them doing it, but the vocals were bland, boring, lacking in soul, second rate compared to the original. i think its great that theyre doing it, but its poorly done.

I'm actually really disappointed in him. I was looking forward to post Conan appearance zingers to help me through my day. But.. the guy... just.. quit.

Good thing Robin started the positive thinking thread to weed out all of the negatives. Next time this thread will be full of:

Oh my, Mary was excellent, what a beautiful performance.

Oh my god, I held my breath the whole time. I've never witnessed anything so precious and satisfying.

etc.

Man... they could have come on stage naked riding fire-breathing-dragons ripping everything up note-for-note and ripped Conans head off at the end and people on Goner Board would still feel underwhelmed and find something wrong with it.

of course, aint that the nature of opinion on a public msg board?
Posted: Mar 14, 2007 8:21 pm

Quintron never played keyboards in the Oblivians. That was Alicia. Dumbass.

This is one of the less bizarre threads I've seen on this board, and I would be more surpised if no one on here had an opinion about the performance.

Best exposure the band has had and the best she's had in years. Will it do anything for either of them...questionable in this transitional time for music as a commodity.

But the real question remains...Why the sunglasses?

i saw quintron play with the oblivians in chicago

I am thinking this was a good performance, but one question. Does the drummer for the Rain Sound always looks like he wants to be somewhere else? He look like a robot. Tell that man to get into it.

Babalooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo!
Posted: Mar 14, 2007 8:33 pm

He always looks uncomfortable but he is a good drummer

Never! Look, I was on TV forevers. I even host a Saturdday Night Live. I am a born performer. My little Ricky is more entertaining than this Rainman, and he's only 5!!!!

Rainman needs more donkey meat and hookers. Then he drum like a real man.

wrong. her voice is down the crapper. I wanted to liked it, I swear. But, the best thing about the shangri las was her voice and its like two octaves lower and has nothing special to it, in that performance anyhow.
