I was wondering what type of soul music Mr. Mayer is associated with? Doowop? Northern? R&B Stompers? Anyone... ED perhaps?

plus songs like 'from now on' and what's that other one that are some serious james brown style mid 6o's funky soul movers. and 'i had a dream' wasn't as big a hit as 'village of love' but these days it's always one of the biggest hits at the record parties. killer, don't miss the show. and don't front on gino washington dude. he'll slay you dead.

Garage Soul maybe? Them Fortune recordings are rough and like a lot of indy stuff from any era they don't quite sync up with whatever was contemporary (that's a good thing) I think of Nathaniel's 45s as kind of the mid-point between Andre Williams and Nolan Strong (fellow Fortune artists) Now (the live show, with the Shanks) it's a nearly out of control House Party, Detroit-style, just like Eric said.

"Does the man have a website?" That's a joke, right?

A couple of years ago, I had the chance to interview ANDRE WILLIAMS in my old SAAB 900. This is what he had to say about NATHANIEL MAYER :

Can you tell us some more about Nathaniel Mayer ?

I donít even wanna fuck with that. Because Iím not a put down man and Nathaniel is not one of my best. So I donít even wanna fuck with that.

The Demolition Doll Rods played a song of him tonight..

So ? Thatís what they have been doing. Frankly I think heís a crazy, insane motherfucker.

Is he still alive ?

I have no idea, he probably is (wants to quit the subject...)

Buck...find someone w/ high speed and get on over to WFMU online. Dave the Spazz did a phone interview which you'll probably find enlightening and also played some tunes. Here's a link to the archive Nay Dog!.

This just in from MOJOman & royal pendleton mike hurtt (slightly edited for Memphis relevance from original New Orleans alert):

Dear Music Lover,
This saturday night, the Bluff City will bear witness to NATHANIEL MAYER,
one of the most dynamic soul men ever to come crashing out of the Motor
City. Is that saying something? Well, yes it is, as a quick trip to the
website http://www.soulfuldetroit.com will tell you, there was NO place like pre-riot, early '60s, sharkskin suit and alligator shoes Detroit, baby! We
ain't talkin' about Motown, either, we're talking about doo-wop and soul
colliding in the kind of microphone-ribbon shattering frenzy that could have
ONLY been captured betwixt the cinder block walls and dirt floors of the
hallowed Fortune studio, the same place that Andre Willims cut "Jailbait"
and "Bacon Fat."

MAYER will be slinging out ALL of his hits and misses on Friday including
his 1962 smash "Village Of Love," "I Had A Dream," "Leave Me Alone," "I Want
Love And Affection (Not THe House Of Correction)," "My Lonely Island, "A
Place I Know" and even a few songs that he penned for Nolan Strong and the
Diablos and never got to record himself. Will he cover "Mind Over Matter"?
WHO KNOWS!! Be there to find out!!

Detroit's Shanks--led by founding Detroit Cobra Jeff Meir and former
Compulsive Gambler Dale Beavers--and featuring that deerstalker sporting
man-about-the-Midwest Dan Mulholland, will provide the necessary propulsive
backing.

Y'all better show up, and show out, for those of us that can't.
