Goner Message Board / ???? / IN STOCK TODAY- THE SHINS?!?
Posted: Jan 23, 2007 10:55 pm

BWAHHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!!

I can't stand this band but i think it's pretty hilarious that they're included on the banner for this board among Hubble Bubble and Sonic Rendezvous Band! Guaranteed to piss off the Trash-Rockier than thou fanboy types for sure!

Then again,i have a weird sense of humor sometimes. At least i thought it was funny.
Posted: Jan 23, 2007 10:58 pm

how many times did you see them in PO town Joe?
Posted: Jan 23, 2007 11:01 pm

They have a couple really good songs on their first album.
Posted: Jan 23, 2007 11:05 pm

I never see them. I'm too busy wasting my time on bands that don't suck. I have heard they're actually nice guys, but i just don't think i'd have anything to say to 'em. It's not like they're holding court at the Tonic every night or anything.
Posted: Jan 23, 2007 11:07 pm

"They have a couple of really good songs on their first album."

No they don't. Now the Drags on the other hand... Pure Country Gold.

Wasn't one of the dudes in Scared of Chaka? I liked Scared of Chaka. Haven't heard The Shins before...or maybe I have??? There was an article on 'em in the local paper and it mentioned they did a McDonalds commercial.

Yes! Great band! Don't get yer hopes up...Shins are shite!
Posted: Jan 23, 2007 11:21 pm

yeah, one of em was in scared of chaca. so good to see that he makes some dough now that he would have deserved for scared of chaka... what i know by the shins is pretty boring to me but not as bad as say the decemberists.
Posted: Jan 23, 2007 11:35 pm

"... not as bad as say,the decemberists."

They both suck compared to the Miracle Workers! Not that either band would know about that... like Frank Black and that dude from Pavement that live up here, just another buncha Indie Rock Carpetbaggers.

They sound nothing alike. I've always wanted to go to a Shins show and scream out names of Scared of Chaka songs to see if they'd play one. "Horshack!!!" "I'm A Fucking Asshole!!!" "C'mon, Lookout!!!!" SOC were a tremendous live band. I can't imagine the Shins moving around too much during their shows.
Posted: Jan 23, 2007 11:43 pm

I heard the Shins will change your life.

Zing?

(Call him "Dave of Chaka"--I thought that was his name forever; never heard Scared of Chaka either)
Posted: Jan 23, 2007 11:48 pm

The only song I've heard from them is "New Slang", and it's not bad at all. Other than that I couldn't say.
Posted: Jan 24, 2007 12:37 am

no Shins buyers today! Hmm!

pure country gold is coming... there's a ton of actually GOOD stuff just in... trying to get it on the cart all day... peek it if you can...
Posted: Jan 24, 2007 12:41 am

We sold our Marantz speakers at the sale and the Polks are still in the box so the PCG won't be heard til FLA. If it is anything like live, I will give it a #1 with a bullet.
Posted: Jan 24, 2007 2:43 am

The Shins are fucking great and Sacared of Chaka were fucking great. I love both bands.

Fuck you if you don\\\'t like the Shins you\\\'re probably deaf.
Posted: Jan 24, 2007 3:35 am

where's my box set? boo hoo hoo, and my e.c.s.r. boo hoo hoo, i just want what i want when i want it, which is right now boo hoo hoo

maybe the goner store has been taken over by a gang of indie rock fag pirates.
Posted: Jan 24, 2007 3:57 am

the shins sound like the smiths, now diggler, you know that the smiths were pure limey fags and so many fag hags had to shed tears over the smiths not getting no cock..same way they get the sniffles for the shins...
Posted: Jan 24, 2007 8:18 am

Eric, you should stock the new Clinic album. It's great.
Posted: Jan 24, 2007 1:40 pm

The Shins probably watch the WB.
Posted: Jan 24, 2007 1:47 pm

YEAH ROT SHIT

Im actually curious about the latest Decemberists. I don't know shit about that band, but when i was in my local record store last, one of the guys was playing it and it sounded like Robyn Hitchcock to me.

I remember when the Shins first album came out and everyone was flipping their lid over it. It wasn't bad, but it definitely wasn't anything to flip one's lid over.
Posted: Jan 24, 2007 4:02 pm

Yeah, the shins aren't too bad...

What the fuck message board am I on?!!
Posted: Jan 24, 2007 4:15 pm

ha! i was just sayin'!
Posted: Jan 24, 2007 4:16 pm

just got the limes(!!) in as i typed that....we can talk all about that instead.
Posted: Jan 24, 2007 4:51 pm

Thank you Steph, this thread can still be saved! Let's start by asking where the vinyl is...
Posted: Jan 24, 2007 4:57 pm

shins have a sweet sound like the zombies or something. dave hernandez was the guitar player for s.o.c. they use to play my basement when they toured through portland.

they're handled by the same mgmt as the white stripes, so get use to seeing them everywhere.

Let's start by asking where the vinyl is...

i don't know, but this is stellar packaging. No matter though, i just hope i don't lose it right away. The tarantula one was never on vinyl, was it?
Posted: Jan 24, 2007 5:23 pm

Last I checked Goner was a for-profit store, we lived in a capitalistic society, and I'm sure they have bills to pay...I hope they sell a shitload of Shins records, which will allow them to carry a lot more obscure things....

btw, If you buy the Shins LP you get a onetime coupon to download the entire thing to your computer too, which is really cool on there part...aside from Shellac putting CD copies in some of their LPs I'm not sure if this has been done many time before....

oh...I like the Shins..they are fun

Tell me what Limes sound like--I have a feeling real good. Shawn was always a fantastic post-Midnight serander (remember, Joe Danger?)!!!!

Decemberists bug me. The pretentions are way too thick.

aside from Shellac putting CD copies in some of their LPs I'm not sure if this has been done many time before....

I think Touch & Go is doing the "free download" thing with all their LP releases these days. I know The Fix LP comes with a one-time coupon for a complete album download.
Posted: Jan 24, 2007 5:58 pm

i've seen the shins before. they really weren't terrible, but yeah, they don't move around a whole lot on stage. not really what i'm into normally, but not the worst thing i've seen in my life. really nice guys though. they came and hung out at the two way with a bunch of us after the show.
Posted: Jan 24, 2007 6:03 pm

Why would I want shitty Shins songs on my computer?
Posted: Jan 24, 2007 7:47 pm

I love the shins and I'm glad I can buy it from Goner.

SOC is probably my favorite band ever.
Posted: Jan 24, 2007 8:01 pm

The Shins probably watch the WB.

I would assume they watched it at least the times they were on the Gilmore Girls (they played when Rory and Paris went to Florida for spring break and they kissed and then once when Rory was at Chilton, she was listening to them on her ipod)

Ordered!
Posted: Jan 24, 2007 8:04 pm

decemberists were mentioned last night in GG, too, actually. as was Lenny Bruce. and sebastian was back! with his kid! briefing lane and co. on breast milk vs formula (god damnit, ang).
Posted: Jan 24, 2007 8:05 pm

Well, if you have to order it, I'm glad you're getting it here...
Posted: Jan 24, 2007 8:10 pm

That one guy looks like a terrorist.

IN STOCK TODAY- THE SHINS?!?

yeah no shit eric. something you're trying to tell or keep from us?
Posted: Jan 24, 2007 8:28 pm

(god damnit, ang)

Yeah, it's like a car wreck.
Of course we watched it last night, too.
Posted: Jan 24, 2007 8:35 pm

Yeah, it's like a car wreck.

it is!!
Posted: Jan 24, 2007 8:36 pm

This is funny. Like they're really that much different from some of the garbage y'all are into.
Posted: Jan 24, 2007 8:38 pm

"Fuck you if you don't like the Shins you're probably deaf."

I can hear just fine. They sound like a McDonald's commercial.

"decemberists were mentioned last night in GG too..."

I'm sure he's rolling over in his grave. Talking shit about bands you hate is a Scumfuc Tradition. if you people lived in Portland you'd wanna splatter diarrhea shits all over these bands and esp. their fans too. Nothing personal though,i don't really care that much.

Doesnt Pitchfork have a forum you guys can chat about gay music on? Might be worth looking in to.

I dunno Mark, they don't exactly sound like the Alarm Clocks or anything...

Joe, you started the thread. and GG means "Gilmore Girls" not Allin.
Posted: Jan 24, 2007 9:00 pm

if that's what you meant.
Posted: Jan 24, 2007 9:01 pm

Joe, you started the thread. and GG means "Gilmore Girls" not Allin.

This is what I'm saying. On GOner GG should always mean Allin.
Posted: Jan 24, 2007 9:03 pm

alright, this is starting to get really funny.

good point

better point

Funny, when I saw that I thought "Yes, I'd like to own that."
I like their records although them live was pathetic and awful. If I had money in my checking account I'd buy it right now. Instead I will wait for someone else to buy it and send me a burned copy. Say, Norah.....?
Posted: Jan 24, 2007 9:18 pm

With attitudes like the ones I see on this thread............ how do you ever expect obscure bands to be as pop as the Shins?
Posted: Jan 24, 2007 10:17 pm | Edited by: Rumpleforeskin

The Shins were on SNL last week. I had never heard of them. I don't think I was misssing out on much. i kept expecting them to break out into the "Love American Style" theme. I was incredulous that they have a girl with them that does nothing but beat a tambourine against her hip. It was very Laurie Partridge-esque.

doesn't BJM have one of those too?

pure country gold finally up!

GOLD VINYL IF YOU MOVE QUICK!!!

So now the ad at the top says that you get a free 7" w/ purchase. Does that come w/ the record anyway (like the Mentors' "Value Pack") or is that an exclusive Goner store promotion to move 'em? I haven't heard any of the Shins' music, but I like the two songs that I own by SoC. If I hit the jackpot tonight at the casino I may purchase it if there's a free 7" thrown into the deal...
Posted: Jan 24, 2007 10:32 pm

It's a limited thing that sub pop threw at us without warning. i don't think they're doing it forever.
Posted: Jan 24, 2007 10:59 pm

Posted: Jan 24, 2007 11:04 pm

dammit. i just blew all my gift certificate on other stuff. shoulda waited for the gold record. oh well.
Posted: Jan 24, 2007 11:04 pm

You should've. Great stuff! PCG!
Posted: Jan 24, 2007 11:17 pm

That's pretty sweet stuff Petey. Now you're gonna be all sold out in no time.
Posted: Jan 24, 2007 11:48 pm

SOC is probably my favorite band ever.

They're one of mine, too. SOC had many different sides to them--they once sang Smiths songs during a beer chugging break at a show. Another time, Dave took the stage during a Motards set when the singer got pooped and cranked out a bunch of metal covers. I guess what I'm trying to say is that SOC were complicated, complex young men, searching to discover who they were and what the world meant in a time that is confusing for a lot of people. Shit, I'm starting to sound gayer than the Shins!

doesn't BJM have one of those too?

Yeah, and she's ugly as hell.
Posted: Jan 25, 2007 1:35 am

So did the Warlocks at some point. Might well be the same one. Junkies suck.

i dig SOC as well. i gave that one 10" to my drummer, who worships ZEKE and he bout flipped out.
Posted: Jan 25, 2007 1:43 am

SOC is probably my favorite band ever.

I don't really have any problem with them or their music, but there was this girl I was acquainted with at some point who was really into them, I think to the point where she followed them around a bunch. An old roommate was trying to put the moves on her and she had no problem coming into my room in the middle of the night, often accompanied by even more annoying friends, sitting on my bed, and conversing with him. I can't hear their songs or stories about them without getting hacked off all over again.

yeah, that's what the jews in germany thought in the 30s when the the brown shirts were smashing shopppe windows and carting off undesireables. they figured herr hitler would put an end to this 'revolution' once he took power.

whoa, i'm going WAAAAYYYY overboard.
Posted: Jan 25, 2007 3:18 am

An ingenious way for many a Portland band of thirty somethings to start schlupping the hordes of fine young tush moving to town.
Posted: Jan 25, 2007 3:29 am

schlupping

you mean schtupping.
Posted: Jan 25, 2007 3:38 am

start schlupping
You're a total fraud as a jew.
Posted: Jan 25, 2007 3:48 am

Schlupping, schtupping, let's work the whole thing out.

You're a total fraud as a jew.

Thank god for that. I mean, taking Communion last week was the beginning of the giveaway, huh? No wonder the family converted.
Posted: Jan 25, 2007 8:21 am

I can't hear/read anything you guys are saying. I'm in a waiting room listening to The Shins on headphones. A really dorky looking guy is about to walk in and our meeting is about to change both of our lives.

my favorite record store in Stown- is SGS! I was just up there
and had no chance to stop in...

was not one of the SHins in Scared for chaka?
Now they were great- all from new mexico anyway...
Posted: Feb 1, 2008 11:04 am

Didja hear about the knock-down drag-out that Shins guy and his America's Next Top Model now ex-girlfriend Elise (season 1) had recently? Biting, bruises, police... she has 2 feet on him, no surprise charges will not be pressed.

It doesn't change the face that they're still a really bad band.

Even a year after this thread was startetd.
Posted: Feb 1, 2008 12:49 pm

they're still a really bad band.

That's what she said while she was beating his ass.
Posted: Feb 1, 2008 1:01 pm

I'm sure he already knows. Soon to get worse as they write even more blatantly commercial tunes to offset legal costs!
Posted: Feb 1, 2008 1:14 pm

It doesn't change the face that they're still a really bad band.

Come on, they're not nearly as bad as the Decemberists.
Speaking of which, that dude is actually going to put out an EP of SAM COOKE COVERS!
Are you frickin' kidding me?!?
Posted: Feb 1, 2008 2:07 pm

"Come on,they're not nearly as bad as the Decemberists."

And Lethal Injection is more "Humane" than The Electric Chair. Your point being?
