Goner Message Board / ???? / I posted this in "Memphis", but it was too good not to share

I don't know if this is Big Brother or some kind of amazing thing sent to entertain me for hours...well, that's true of a lot of the web, isn't it?
http://www.librarything.com/

My friend that uses it just told me about it. It's kind of like Flickr for your books. I've yet to get deep into it, but you can catalogue all your books, rearrange them, see all the covers, tag them, see who else has them...OH GOD!
I told her it'd take me six months and she said she did 200 in a day!

If anyone's used this please tell me about it. I'll check back when I do more reconnoissance.

That's interesting, I'm playing around with it some now. I suspect they hope to be bought out by Amazon... and I bet they will be.

Amazon already lets you add your existing book library to your profile. I've added many of my favorite books, but even more of my music library. The reason to do this is to make the automated recommendations more accurate.

What this site, LibraryThing, does is, it adds a community level to your collection beyond anything that exists on Amazon.

It also seeems like it would be easy for Amazon to simply say, 'Oh, that looks like a good *idea*, thanks!', and then build it themselves. But if LibraryThing does a good job of building it right, and then are willing to sell it at the right price, then they'll profit handsomely. A few million. Enough to retire on, or lauch your next venture with. Good for them.

And thank you for sharing the site.

It gets slow, and bogs down a lot.
Posted: Aug 16, 2006 2:26 am

I just tried to load more books and got this message:

> LibraryThing is temporarily offline
> We'll be back soon. Databases are sweating. (updated 9:26pm EST)
Posted: Aug 16, 2006 2:27 am

That's annoying
Posted: Aug 16, 2006 2:44 am

Uh oh...that hasn't happened to me yet. I've only loaded 6 books, and kind of sporadically, so I'll have to go back and see how it navigates.
If it's easy to use then it'll entertain me for hours. Though, I just got off the phone with a friend who was laughing her ass off about what a nerdy, useless thing it was.
Anyway, I like to categorize my stuff....

looks like something that will give me hours of late night pleasure.

I'm such an übber geek, I've been uploading book covers for the ones that don't have one.
Posted: Aug 16, 2006 3:37 am

I notice that, when I make changes, it takes a few minutes for it to propagate. A book cover won't show up for a few minutees. Then I relaod and it's there.

Man is that site slow... must be all three of us using it at once!
Posted: Aug 16, 2006 3:41 am

Must be! I'm on cable though, and it's fairly fast. When it takes a minute I just hit refresh and it seems to do okay.

My next step, to be sure!
Posted: Aug 16, 2006 3:55 am

I'm on a cable modem as well. It's still mostly crawling for me. Must be a bottleneck somewhere between here and there... wherever there is.
Posted: Aug 16, 2006 6:57 am

Well, at 2am it promptly went offline again.

Good excuse to goto bed.

Here's an interview with him, and how his book collecting led him to build the site:

He's in Portland, MA, of all places! Way to go, Portland.

You're welcome. I hadn't seen the dragon page, but I glanced through a few others. It's easy to see how he ended up building the book collecting site.

If you're a dvd nerd like me, there's a thing like this for cataloging your DVD collection that's been around for a while.

Oh, great, thanks for creating more work for me. And I was thinking, 'In another week, I'll have this whole library thing done...'

At least my DVD collection would only take me about an hour.

You gotta click on the categories listed under "subfolders."

Yes, I'm so gay I categorized my DVDs by genre.

Not to one-up your geekness, but I sort my CDs aphabetically, then chronologically by release date within each band (with oldest in front). I use discsox sleeves, and built custom plexiglass runners into the inside of my drawers to sort them.

I don't think I have a DVD collection worthy of such organization. Right now they're just stuffed in a cardboard box.

Oh, now all of these links weren't there yesterday (I swear, I swear)...
You have a lot of movies.

I do that with my CDs too. Don't go as far as the discsox things, tho.

It's weird, CD's, since I upload them to my hard drive soon as I get 'em anyway, seem kind of throwaway to me.

Fuck with my DVDs or vinyl, though, and you're dead meat.

It's a sickness.

I got robbed about a year ago and they took off with a bunch of empty CD jewel boxes (I had my CDs in a booklet), but didn't touch my DVDs except for swiping my Nightmare on Elm Street box set (?)

Crackheads are stupid.

I'm much the same way with books. I have a few DVDs, but I'm not so bad, as far as that goes. I have a real O.C.D. thing with organizing and documenting everything. A friend of mine once nicknamed me "the Archivist". I have volumes of photo albums, scrap books of concert tickets, lists and lists... I cannot resist a website like this!

I just found out that there are two different sites where you can do this with your music collection:

http://rateyourmusic.com/

http://www.CD-Tracker.com/
