Goner Message Board / ???? / Jack Stands Appreciation Thread
Posted: Aug 6, 2006 11:11 pm

Never had met this guy except for a few exchanges of banter on this site & he couldn't have been any cooler at the Hi Tone last night. I started by getting him a High Life ('cause I saw his was getting low) & after that, it was on. Lively banter & drinks galore. He gave the girl a big hug, so she loves him now too.

This guy's the sites moderator for fook's sake! How thankless of a job can you get? At any rate, he's on my Christmas card list & I hope that I can put back a drink with him again soon!

If I had a vagina, I would let Jack Stands do as he pleased with it.
Posted: Aug 7, 2006 1:48 am

No one "lets" their vagina get played by Jack, it gets honored with the privilege.

Jack records the room live to 2-track (usually). So the guitar volume is up to the guitar player...or his amp.
Posted: Aug 7, 2006 6:20 am

Multi-track is usually Kyle Johnson on the mix. That man is a master when it comes to mixing drums. He will spend hours, obsessively, on the drums.
I wouldn't trust anyone else with it. He will spend alot of his free time listening to (over and over again) at the controls of the bad ass board, compressors, limiters, younameit that takes up half of his small apartment.
When listening back to a lot of the stuff with Kyle (and I wasn't there for nearly as long a time as he spent on it), I would always offer the following critiques:
1. The kick drum sounds like the "New Daisy"
2. Turn up the guitars.

Otherwise, he was on his own, doing the mix as he saw fit. Just like me, doing all of this as a labor of love. And I stand by him. If there is a real hero here, I nominate Kyle.
Posted: Aug 7, 2006 6:26 am

And brad's right. When it comes to the multi-track stuff, we got the amp separate from everything else. It can be turned up.
The Oblivians stuff that has been posted was taken from a splitter before the soundman's board. We had our own signal and were running a mix directly to DAT (where the posts originally came from) along with the multi-track. Oblivians multi-track will probably sound DRAMATICALLY different from the DAT mix.

(Which Kyle is working on now, and I'll be there to tell him to "turn up the guitar", per usual).

I think Jack Stands has the hottest lamee-jumpsuited back-up dancers in ROCK, you be the judge:

What a great thread! Jack makes me laugh daily (others, too, I'm sure)!

When I go to Memphis in September, Jack, I'm gonna bring you and your wife a souvenier from the Mars Cheese Castle!

I have been known to say that Jack Stands rules and I'll say it again- JACK STANDS RULES!

Although I did hear he's the reason the Deadly Snakes are breaking up...just what I heard... something about him following them from town to town pointing at one of them and yelling "you're danger from the deadly snakes!"...again just hearsay at this point...
Posted: Aug 7, 2006 7:52 pm

"you're danger from the deadly snakes!"...

Jesus, Jack, he's not a fucking show!
Posted: Aug 7, 2006 7:59 pm

Yay fer Jack!

jack stands has a nice yard
Posted: Aug 8, 2006 2:24 am

Appreciation of Jack Stands...how did I miss this?

I've known Jack for something like 15 years now so I could go on and on...but I'll just say this: No matter how nice or cool or (insert positive adjective) you think Jack is...he's easily 10 times that.
He's just all-around one of the best people to count as a friend.

And he does, in fact, have a nice yard.
Posted: Aug 8, 2006 2:28 am

Jack and Luke were willing to try and let me plug my minidisc to their board during the blackout. Fucking stand up peeps.

As for Jack, let's not forget the ghettofabulous "Gayest Podcast ever." I still listen to that shit. well done.
Posted: Aug 8, 2006 2:28 am

I've never met Jaques Stands, but based off of the posts I've read here, I would buy him a beer if I met him at a show. So, is that what Stands looks like?
Posted: Aug 8, 2006 2:31 am

He knows quality yard tools are no joke for starters. A sign of a right on guy in my book.
Posted: Aug 8, 2006 2:34 am

Jack Stands would be close to my all around favoritest guy, but unfortunately he doesn't like liver.
Posted: Aug 8, 2006 2:34 am

jack stands is a stand up dude
Posted: Aug 8, 2006 2:58 am

I've had a few email "conversations" with Mr. Stands, and he has always been very nice. I almost must say that he has had me laughing more than anyone else that posts to this board, Stands...I mean hands-down.
Posted: Aug 8, 2006 3:54 am

i wish i could've hung out with jack stands a little more when i came to memphis, but it was a busy night with the local ruffians. i'll be back in december, so this time i'll buy you a beer!
Posted: Aug 8, 2006 4:50 am

Good to see kids represent. The girl & I ate so well in Memphis & had so much fun, we didn't get to do all the things we wanted, so a return trip is being planned. Unfortunately, it probably won't be until late '07 or '08. What can I say? We got too many friends all over this buck wild rock. We look forward to putting back a few High Lifes with this individual of extreme & uncommon quality.

Gene, I gotta say, it was great to meet you and the lady! Extra surprise to find out you knew Bruce, 'cause I just met him last week (an extremely righteous dude). And your "Eric in Colombus" story was hillarious.
Let's definitely grab some drinks when you come back! And if I'm ever up your way, I'll be giving you a holler!
Posted: Aug 8, 2006 5:46 am

i was expectin' this thread to be this long. even longer.

jack stands IS the rockening.

I'm not sure I know Jack. I kind of come and go around here. Haven't been in Memphis in years. Is Jack Stands same as Jack Oblivian same as Jack Yarber? Or is this wrong, and different people?

Whomever... he seems like a swell guy.
Posted: Aug 8, 2006 7:46 am

Yes
Posted: Aug 8, 2006 8:10 am

Yes, the same Jack, or yes different people?!
I think you mean the former...

If so, we've met, in fact I'm sure I've probably even hung-out with Jack, but I can't specifically recall. I was briefly roommates with Rod, way way back in the day... '89. He wanted me to do the cover art for a Compulsive Gamblers 7", might have even been the first, not really sure. It never panned out, too bad too... but about a month ago, when moving into our new place I found the original sketch. It's just like, a little two inch doodle. If anybody gives a damn, I could scan it in.

Then you're suppose to say, "Yes, different people," and then I've completely wasted a good story.

"And if I'm ever up your way, I'll be giving you a holler!"

Rest assured the red carpet will be rolled out.

Jack Stands is not Jack Yarber. Both are great guys, but they're nothing alike.

Brad, a lot of Jack's recordings are done at the Buccaneer (which you've played) and at Murphy's with stereo condensor mics (I'm guessing they're condensors). Both are pretty small clubs with nothing but a vocal PA. That's why it's usually the guitar player's fault (or his amp's) when you can't hear the guitar on Jack's recordings.

Jack Stands is the shit. I hope I get the opportunity to meet your family some time. And.....Scott Rogers is gay. I mean, I love you Scott.

Ha! Then I did waste a great story!

So if Jack Stands is not Jack Yarber, then I may not know him at all, except from this board. Was Jack Stands around the Murphy's/Antenna Club scene in the late 80s, early 90s? Also, I'm assuming Jack Stands is a great stage same, is there a real name?
Posted: Aug 8, 2006 2:46 pm

Jack Stands is a fucker. About 2 months ago, I loaned him my copy of Death Hunt starring Charles Bronson and Lee Marvin. Not only has he not returned it, I bet he hasn't even watched it yet. Not returning it is no big deal as I've seen it a million times, but not watching it is unforgivable!

Maybe this should go in the Jack Stands unappreciation thread, but I couldn't find one and don't feel like starting one as this would probably be the only post in there.

" Also, I'm assuming Jack Stands is a great stage same, is there a real name?"

Jack Stands is the name he used when he was making porn films in the mid-90s to early this decade. When he became moderator of this board, he just decided to keep it. He is a stand-up guy, even when he's on his back.

jack stands will be recording our soon to be released tiple-album and he's having my baby...from his beard.
hippie!

And.....Scott Rogers is gay.

Where the fuck did that come from?

Jack Stands=Robin Pack. Let me know if you need his phone number or his address, ya know, in case you'd like to stop by at 3:00 AM sometime and tell him how great he is.

I was happy to hug your neck, finally.
Trying to stay away from everything.
Hope y'all are well.
