I expect this to be a short list.

Them

That's all I got right now.
Posted: Apr 15, 2006 3:35 am

there must be some bio out there on the scene Them came from. There's a bio on Van that points to his early life and how he got into American blues and R&B

Oh yeah, and Undertones
Posted: Apr 15, 2006 3:47 am

I liked "Rum, Sodomy, and the Lash" by the Pogues.
Posted: Apr 15, 2006 4:27 am

"Red Roses for Me" was pretty good, too. And some of that Nips stuff.

And.... THIN LIZZY!

Radiators from Space
Protex
Outcasts
Stiff Little Fingers

There was a whole book on punk in Northern Ireland that came out a few years ago. I'd like to find a copy of that one.

See, I thought about the nips when starting this thread, but as far as I can tell the Nips are a British band with an Irish frontman.

Good point. I think Cait O'Riorden (later of the pogues) was in the Nips, too. But definitely based in the UK.

I've never heard any Irish music that sounded good to me.I hate that Goddamn "lord of the dance"motherfucker! My X-girlfriend rented a room to some stupid crusty train-jumpin Bitch that was all fuckin' proud of herself for being Irish. What a STUPID CUNT.

And if you want to get technical about it, the Pogues were a London based band too. And ironically, Shane MacGowan was born in England.

MacGowan was born in England

On Chritmas day, no less!!

Yeah, Pogues were based in London, but they were all Irish, and played Irish music, so I'd consider them an Irish band.

Any English bands based in Ireland we can think of?
Posted: Apr 15, 2006 7:34 pm

The Poges are awful. You should be ashamed of yourself.
Posted: Apr 15, 2006 8:15 pm

The Golden Horde were pretty good.

There's a bunch of good songs on their first LP, TV Tube Heart. It was reissued, or bootlegged more likely, on vinyl a few years ago so it shouldn't be too hard to find. Definitely worth tracking down.

The other good Outcasts songs are The Cops Are Coming and Self Concious Over You.

but they were all Irish

I think if you look at their bios you will find out that this isn't true.

In any case, yes. They were definitely had a knack of being able to take Irish traditional music and rip it up, and were well loved in Ireland for it.
Posted: Apr 15, 2006 8:42 pm

Rory Gallagher definitely had his moments.
Posted: Apr 15, 2006 8:52 pm

I think My Bloody Valentine originally came from Dublin.
Posted: Apr 15, 2006 8:59 pm

Anyone say U2 yet?
Posted: Apr 15, 2006 9:02 pm

Dexy's Midnight Runner's, too (kidding about the U2 thing- not kidding about this. "Searching for the Young Soul Rebels" and "Too-Rye-Ay"- or however it's spelled- are great pop records).
Posted: Apr 15, 2006 9:02 pm

Yuck.
Posted: Apr 15, 2006 9:05 pm

Yuck.

I dunno, man. There's some killer poppy blue-eyed soul shit on those. Plus the band leader... something Roland? What a lunatic.

I was gonna say Taste, but that's Rory Gallagher too I guess.
Posted: Apr 16, 2006 3:49 am

The lead guy from My Bloody Valentine is American. Dexys are from Birmingham. And Outcasts/SLF/Undertones/Rudi/Atrix/Protex/Them etc are actually British. U2 are Irish and they are fucking shit. Rory gallagher I'm guessing is Irish and so are fucking Enya. So Martel has a point. I can't name one single Irish band that are good. Dropkick Murphys hahaha
Posted: Apr 16, 2006 4:34 am

the singer from fastway, dave king, is irish. and he also sings in flogging molly, who i dont really care fur. but fastway were killer, well their first cd at least. they later had another member who was irish. their drummer i believe.

The Tearjerkers are another good one.

Undertones, Stiff Little Fingers, first Pogues albums that's about it.

I can't name more thans, say 4 or 5 brit bands that's good either. They always sound so british and I don't mean that as a compliment.
