Anybody who hates Kiss has obviously never popped open their older brother's copy of "Double Platinum" at age 11, stuck it on their dad's 70's Radio Shack turntable, and rocked out while staring at themselves in the trippy silver "mirror" gatefold sleeve. The list would be too big to even begin with, but:

Cold Gin
Rock and Roll All Nite
Strutter
Makin' Love
Beth
Calling Dr. Love
Rip It Out (anything off Ace's solo LP, really.)
Love Gun
Duece
Black Diamond
Parasite
Hotter Than Hell
Do You Love Me?
C'mon and Love Me
Plaster Caster

God how can you not like 70's-era Kiss?
Posted: Feb 9, 2006 5:39 pm

And you watch me playin' guitar
And you feel what my fingers can do
And you wish you were the one I was doing it to

I agree with most of what you said. I love KISS and always have and have seen them 4 times in concert. My very first album I ever purchased with my own money was KISS: Alive and my first riff was "Dr. Love".

There was a series over here recently with Gene 'training' kids from a very expensive private school how to be rockers. They had a performance day at the school where the rock kids followed some other kids doing classical stuff; pretty funny watching these 11 year olds spazzing out to 'Wild Thing', with Gene chewing his nails off then wetting himself with glee!

in the 70s when I was wee and KISS was hot, their trading cards frightened me. I had the charlies angeles ones instead. but many years later when I finally discovered KISS--Alive I--i said whoohoo! they're a complete package: rock, humor, COSTUMES, faggetry, hooks, drug addiction, cock and balls. how can they be denied??

no pun bands EVER do Kiss covers...KISS didnt inspire ANYBODY to pick up a guitar and act like an idiot...

I think there was a movement among late 80's punk bands in which Kiss was considered cool in an ironic way. Sloppy Seconds had that "Destroyed" record cover, The Lemonheads did a Kiss cover on one of their early records (when they were still kind of a pop punk band). I dunno how influential I would say they are overall, though. Def. more of an influence on metal/glam/nu metal bullshit. Still a good band, tho.
Posted: Feb 12, 2006 2:54 am

Melvins' KISS covers are the best, Goin' Blind is tops! They cover another one too... Redd Kross cover Deuce.
Posted: Feb 12, 2006 12:03 pm

after 'dressed to kill' came out and didn't sell that well, kiss almost broke up. but then 'alive' came out and was a hit, so they kept at it.

i honestly believe that if kiss had broken up in 75/76, punk fans would be creaming over their old records like they do over the dolls.

i was 9 years old when i bought 'destroyer' in 1976 (first record i ever bought) - i saw them on the 'paul lynde halloween special' and they blew my little comic book loving mind.
while i wanted the see them play evey time they came through miami, my mom would let me see them live until 1979 on the dynasty tour.
it was my first concert and it was fucking great!

they sure as hell have put out a lot of crap, but those first studio 6 albums (+ aces solo album) are steller.

i'm glad kiss still pisses off the purists.

best lyric -

from "Let Me Go Rock 'n' Roll" offa Hotter Than Hell -

You try so hard to please
You get me hard you know
Baby, won't you squeeze
Let me go
Let me go
Let me go

A couple of weeks ago I downloaded Paul Stanley's "People, Let Me Get This Off My Chest-The Stage Banter." It's over 65 minutes of nothing but Paul Stanley's inane song introductions. "How many of you people like to drink... vodka and orange juice?!?"

It's pretty great, but nowhere near as excellent as the Venom 7" that Ecstatic Peace put out several years back. Now that is a slice of fried gold.

i love KISSco. not all of dynasty was KISSco though, Ace's songs were straight rock. Maybe 2 songs on it were. I Was Made For Loving You was KISS"S biggest international hit.

let me go ahead and correct ya on this, just in case yer ever on jeopardy or something. Beth was KISS's biggest charting song at #7. It shared a People's Choice Award fur song of the year with Disco Duck by former memphis dj, Rick Dee's. Thanks fur letting me clear that up. Oh, and Beth was originally called Beck (as in Becky).

"Makin' Love" off Alive II, despite the fact that it celebrates date rape.

Cold Gin is hard to beat, too.

Truth be told though, if I wasn't one of the million 7 year old kids that everyone said killed Kiss' coolness, I prolly wouldn't be so into them now. I like some of the songs pretty good, but I reckon it's more about the nostalgia.

I agree with the first part, and it might be nostalgia to you, but there are at least 7 more million kids who still don't know the sheer greatness of the rock band, KISS, and when they do it won't be nostalgia to them.

oh and i never made the connection of date rape with Makin' Love. that's pretty funny.

i was once in the family wagon playing Dynasty on 8 track and remembering my mom NOT liking 2000 Man cuz according to her it was a song about Space Ace's quest to have 2000 women. You would think Mick n Keith would have called it 2000 Women then.

By the way, my moms fave KISS song is I was made fur luvin' U. And it should be yer moms too.

oh yeah, the mego action figures, they were actually called dolls back then. my mom got those fur me KISSmas 78. actually she only got 3 of em at the Zayre's on summer avenue. apparently they were sold out of the peter criss one. i still have em and they still look good in my sisters old "barbie's summer house getaway". a lot of moms n dads wouldnt let their precious children have that terrible KISS krap. i guess my parents were either cool and/or didnt know any better. i remember giving my extra KISS bubblegum cards to mark griffin who lived in my hood. a few days later he gave em back and said his mom wouldnt let him have this stuff in the house.

For "show and tell" in 1st grade, because of a dream I had, I told the whole class I saw Kiss in concert the night before and it was awesome (probably didn't use that word...don't know if it was invented yet). Needless to say, my teacher called my parents to find out if it was true. I'd like to think it was.
Posted: Jul 22, 2006 7:20 am

dude, i WAS at a KISS concert last week, Gene came out to the parking lot and blew not one, but two fireballs from his mouth. Ace was back with the band and was shooting bottle rocks from his nog-a-hide space boots, Paul wasn't playing much geetar, but had two bodacious blondes under each arm and yelling into the mike "YA WANT ONE MORE!?!?!?!" Eric Singer(not Peter) kept vainly looking in a mirror that was being held by his drum tech. It was funny, cuz he would not stop drumming. and then my alarm clock went off.

I used to have a VHS copy of "Kiss Animalize: Live and Uncensored." It's taped in (of course) Detroit.
At one point between the songs, Paul says to the audience, "We got into the hotel room tonight! You know what hotel we're staying at, doncha?!?"
[cue audience begging for the answer]
Paul: "It's the only hotel that'll let us stay!...Anyway, we were in the hotel, waiting in the lobby, and this woman comes walkin' over to me, and she had THE BIGGEST TITS I EVER SAW IN MY LIFE!"
[cue raucous audience cheering]
Paul: "So this woman walks up to me and says, 'I'm lookin' for Gene!'"
[cue audience cheering for Gene]
Paul: "She says, 'I'm looking for Gene! I want him to meet his LITTLE CHILD!!!'"
[cue Paul walking around the stage as if cradling a little baby, cut to Gene putting his hands out as if to say 'Get away from me, Mom with a baby!'}
Paul: Well, let me just tell you something between you and me Detroit: That baby.......HAD THE LONGEST FUCKIN' TONGUE....I EVER SAW IN MY LIFE!!!"
[Audience goes crazy, Gene does an "Ayy...." kinda gesture with his hands, as if to say..."Yeah, I get my groupies pregnant and don't pay child support!"]

Anyway: "Ladies in Waiting" and "She's So European"

Favorite: God of Thunder

Rock and Roll Over was the first album I ever bought. I was 6.

I had tickets to see them at the Garden a few years ago. I had to give the them away to a friend when I realized it was the same night as my father's 60th Birthday party. I'm not a huge Kiss fan, though. I only have 5 Kiss songs on my iPod. They're fun 70s disco metal theatre. A lot of people are more familiar with them as a pop-culture phenomenon, than they are with their songs. Most people think they were a lot heavier than they were. When I've learned that someone is only familiar with them as a Rock-n-Roll icon but don't know their music, I put on I Was Made for Lovin' You, or Shout it Out Loud, and the reaction is always 'This is what Kiss sounds like?!!?'

in the 70s when I was wee and KISS was hot, their trading cards frightened me.

i used to give my duplicate trading cards to friends of mine. once,i gave em to this kid in my neighborhood, mark griffin, who was the same age as i (9). a few days later he brought em back to me and said his mom wouldnt let him have this stuff in the house. lol.

I thought it was just a couple of drops each in one of the inks.

Kiss for me is like Scooby Doo. Loved it when I was 10. Embarrassed by it now. Kiss lyrics are awful anyway you slice it.

Still, there can be no denying that they were my musical world view for much of my pre-teenage years. Best of all, the teachers in my school hated it!

Favorite songs in the day was probably something offa Love Gun. Strutter was always a favorite, too. I seem to recall liking Destroyer quite a bit, too, but I couldn't name 3 songs offa that record now.

Of all the records I had as a kid, the only ones I have left are all my Kiss records & all my Pink Floyd records.

actually it was a vial of each members blood to prevent clotting of the ink. there was actually a news clip of the event back when it happened.
