Arctic Monkeys Sell Thousands on First Day

01/25/2006 9:24 AM, AP

The Arctic Monkeys sold almost 120,000 copies of their debut album in a single day, and it may become one of the year's top-sellers, retailers said.

The British band shot from obscurity to fame in a matter of months, thanks partly to savvy use of the Internet to market their music to fans.

A stream of adulatory media articles followed, and the group's debut singles, "I Bet You Look Good on the Dancefloor" and "When the Sun Goes Down," both topped the British singles chart.

The band's album, "Whatever People Say I Am, That's What I'm Not," sold 118,501 copies within 24 hours of its release Monday, more than the rest of the top 20 album chart combined. If sales hold up, it will become Britain's fastest-selling debut, surpassing the 306,631 copies sold by Hear'Say's "Popstars" in 2001.

Phil Penman, head of music for retailer HMV, said Tuesday the Monkeys were "well on their way to having the first million-selling album of 2006."

Formed in 2003, the quartet from Sheffield in northern England signed last year to Domino, the independent record label that is home to Scots rockers Franz Ferdinand.

(i have never heard of these fucks either)..............

Shit like this always happens in England - there's a "new Sex Pistols" or "new Beatles" all the time, everyone chews it whole and spits it back out in months.

I never heard of this band. The topic got me all excited about monkeys living in the arctic and making some sort of perverse peguin polar bear porn. Now, that would have been itneresting!

in a recent Rolling Stone Magazine interview with Mick Jagger, he said his favorite bands right now are the Black Eyed Peas and the Arctic Monkeys.

They sound exactly like the fucking Libertines.

The Arctic Monkeys are the worst band in the world. You're lucky as their 'witty english lyrics' will be meaningless to anyone who doesn't live on this shithole of an island so they'll not get to the US (except maybe Rodney On The Roc). You won't get hundreds of bands copying them either. For that you should be truly thankful.

actually, arctic monkeys are touring the US in march and playing some pretty big places. they're getting airplay on lots more than rodney on the roq. those big gigs they have are largely radio sponsored. i think the clear channel likes them

a&r guys are already looking for a band to do here what they've done there.

seriously.

Or how about a manufactured band with members culled from the Goner message board. Maybe they could be called Dirk Diggler and the Dick Ticklers

With a famous wrestler producing your record, I'd say it's in the bag.

I like how they call the music 'thrilling' in that NY Times article. Please, no more, my sides are hurting. Its like describing Radiohead as 'fun'. Hey Dan, do you know where those dildos store their equipment? We should rip it off.

There was a big piece about these douches this morning on the TODAY show, that Good Morning America type show...I woke up to that shit.

i can't take it anymore. i downloaded the album because i am a pulp fan and they were saying he was in the mold of jarvis cocker, or something.

firstly, the music sounds like an exact mix between the strokes and reel big fish. secondly, i couldn't get through more than 9 songs any of the 3 times i tried.

however, there are a few songs that the singer does what few bands, at least, garage, punk, whatever, do and that is tell a story about what is going on and do it in a way that mixes what people know, but don't talk about. if you heard the first Streets album, like that. but only in very few verses on few songs. the rest is just ass.

however 2, they sold 119,000 copies of their first cd on their first day all without a major label. they had a #1 single without an album. regardless of whether the nme stuffed their hungery cock up them and danced them through the halls, they captured an audience without anything and that is the distributions shift that people have been waiting for.

Hey Shaun, I think their rehearsal studios is depicted on the cover of the second no. 1 single, their equipment is probably in there. . . .

wait, Johnny Lowebow told me they sounded just like The Black Lips (he loves the Black Lips).

This sounds more like the Blow Monkeys!

(i don't really know what the blow monkeys sound like)

Okay, this IS serious. My fundamentalist Nebraskan mother just asked me if I'd heard of the Arctic Monkeys. She doesn't even know who the Ramones are. Kripes, she wouldn't know who Led Zeppelin were either, except for that Christian documentary expose back in the 80s with the Queen and ACDC songs with the backwards lyrics...

You know what I'm talking about. Don't pretend you don't.

i like blur (some of it.)

this weren't so good.

My roommate downloaded some yesterday to see what the hoopla's all about.

Eh... kind of EXACTLY like the first Libertines record, with a touch more self-conscious flashy-ness.

I say we make of it that the British had the Rolling Stones and a little old place called the United States of America has had every good band playing rock music since!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! That doesn't mean we're ever secure enough though. Immigration channels need to be tightened someone told me, investigation ability pryed open in a way.

and I hear they got to pair up them Rolling Stones with them two women soul singers. i think someon was saying they were going to be doing "Walk This Way" Super Bowl XL
