eric o
Posted: Oct 9, 2003 3:32 am
how about my segway?
Posted: Oct 9, 2003 4:15 am
Nope-- all Rascal riders have to putter around the house and transport beers to one and all...Segway riders, step off to Seattle.

Yeah,really-there's a place that rents 'em (in Green Lake of course)and i see all these donkeys with smug "i'm livin' in the future" looks on their faces- i swear, it almost makes ya long for the quiet dignity of Rollerblades....ALMOST!

And why there no Pizza Party, huh?

Posted: Oct 9, 2003 4:26 am
Hells, ask Pizza Party to write fierydrunk@hotmail.com and I will ask to get them on...it is high time for a crazed show.
joe danger

as long as they bring enough pizza for everyone.

by way of the weekly, it looks like mr. airplane man are gonna be floating around here as well. they're playing an instore at music millineum on friday afternoon. if anyone in portland wants to try to get ahold of them, i'm sure they can play.
Posted: Oct 11, 2003 3:51 am
pizza party are playing at the dunes soon..... keep yer eyes peeled. ahem.. um, the units have a FREE show at the twilight on the 17th (next weekend) with the minds, and this pop band, it's the jesse elizondo show (his birthday) and all three (yikes) of his bands are playing....
didn't think it warranted it's own thread since not many nw folk read this stuff..

I hope you guys were able to get the Airplane Men on the bill...if not, that's a lot of bands anyway and i wish i could go (same reason i didn't go see 'em last nite w/ The Fallouts...no dinero,in this case, none for the Greyhound)!

Waitaminit... 15th & Emerson.... isn't that THE RANCH? Do you guys play Political Grindcore?Did the house wind up w/ new renters?

Have fun,and i hope the place don't get too trashed!

Posted: Oct 11, 2003 4:18 am
Also, for those in portland, Little Killers play Friday Oct 10 with Epoxies at Berbati's Pan...GREAT band, just ask the gals in Mr. Airplane Man!

Posted: Oct 11, 2003 6:14 am
There are some new renters that are living in the 2000's, but I bet the place still has some people steeped in the heavy, white-dread, black clothing, pipe bomb yer SUV scene.

This is what Ray of Today would say about the show Friday: "BRRRREAK DOWN THE WALLS!!!" Dark Skies are the nerds in the lineup...so unpopular & desperate they shalt melt the hearts of the cold black-hearted anarchists.

Posted: Oct 11, 2003 6:16 am
will you email me at fierydrunk@hotmail.com when you know when the Dunes show will be? THANKS
joe danger
Posted: Oct 11, 2003 6:38 am
NERDS???well, my pants are not pegged, my current outfit contains no denim or leather,my hair is not styled, nor is it styled in a way to look unstyled, i don't ride a motorcycle or a hot rod...ok, so maybe i am a nerd, come to think of it. too punk for the rock and rollers, too rock and roll for the punks. and sadly enough, they all bore me. give me stevie wonder over all of it.
joe danger
Posted: Oct 11, 2003 6:41 am
i wish stevie wonder was playing at the ranch. i wish any show i went to had a remote hint of stevie wonder (circa 70-74, mind you), but no.

Yeah Yeah I'm more hip-hop than anything else....give me the smooth sounds of The Temptations over Stevie Wonder.
Posted: Oct 11, 2003 9:45 pm
Andrew--may an old pal ask what gets your sarcasm bone going when you hear the words "Portland, OR"? I just have to know.
Posted: Oct 11, 2003 9:50 pm
If we were living in Memphis, Laurel's message woulda said something like "Final Solutions is playing at the Buccaneer!" No dif, my fren.

When in Rome, Daddy-O...you'd probably like The Dunes, but you would like sand dunes better, knowing you!

Andrew Earles
Posted: Oct 12, 2003 3:24 am
Actually, it wasn't going at all. I think that Rascals are mildly amusing in any context. That had nothing to do with Portland, and I really do want to live near sand dunes. I've already told you that I want a Florida chapter. No sarcasm from me in this thread.

Yes Tom,you bet i'm a gonna be at both L.K.'s shows in 'attle... see ya tonite!

I wanna check out this Dunes place! Is it really the wild n' crazy heir apparent to Billy Ray's Neighborhood Dive that Portland desperately needs?

Keep my ass posted on the Pizza Party show happening there and i'll ride the Dirty Dawg down for the weekend!

Posted: Oct 12, 2003 4:32 am
Soemtimes it is way difficult to tell wif the written word...

I *do* know that you want & need sand dunes in your life, Roger Tamblyn.

Posted: Oct 12, 2003 4:36 am
The Dunes is pretty swank in its own way but it has a tendency to get extremely insane with the late late late night shows and beer...I saw a Party Time show there at about 4 AM that was so great--it was packed to the gills and people were so relieved to continue the party until dawn.

It is in the same neighborhood which I like cos I live 3 blocks away and can stumble home like I used to from Billy Rays...

we might be trying to set up a show at the dunes with birds of war. maybe we could conglamorate with the pizza party and make it all one show. i think that'd be a pretty fun show.

pizza party is definitely not a punk band but i'm sure they would luv to play at the dunes (which is a great place to play cuz the people that work there are super nice and no one kick you at at 2:30)OR the Units are now back in business and I have (ahem) a bit more say in what they do...
by the way, both little killers AND Mr. Airplane man rocked my socks off..
Posted: Oct 15, 2003 12:56 am
let me clarify: that is; p. party would love to play at the dunes with the birds of war if'n you want mr. danger.
let me know if you need any assistance with this endeavor.
Posted: Oct 15, 2003 1:03 am
at least i think they would... love to play that show. my band is first in line to play with 'em tho

Posted: Oct 15, 2003 1:19 am
whoa whoa whoa SLOW DOWN everyone!
as a member of Pizza Party, i think we're a little over discussed here. First of all, have any of you HEARD us? we're pretty terrible, but that's just one's own opinion. guess you'll have to check us out yerselves and if ya wanna get on the party train then after, by all means, C'MON! but in the meantime, we're still on low profile tip, we'll keep y'all posted with upcomin' shows though.
and HEY JOE, we miss your stink ass here in PDX, you shouldn't be comin' down just for a Pizza Party, you should spread some lovin' this way real soon!!! you know you always be welcome at the Detroit House.

looks like dark skies will be doing a set of bo diddley for halloween as well.
Posted: Oct 15, 2003 2:54 am
what's up with Halloween anyways?
Posted: Oct 15, 2003 3:11 am
as a NON member of Pizza Party I have to say I love your freaking band so shut the hell up miss san!! what makes it so great is that there is really nothing else quite like it, at least not in Portland and possibly anywhere else. And the songs are catchy and personally I think they rock, but what do I know??

tee hee
Posted: Oct 15, 2003 3:16 am
by the way, laurel, did ya get a chance to call 'bouts that show at grand central?
Posted: Oct 15, 2003 5:31 am
m, don't you realize that it's the myth of the band more than anything. it doesn't matter if you're terrible, but once people start a'jibber-jabberin' about you on something like this then it builds 'the hype'. next thing you know you'll be touring and putting out records(which will be awful) but it's OK...you'll have tiny, exclusionary cliques with no opinions whatsoever(except how great you are and ready to pounce on anyone who doesn't share that same, insipid belief). you'll be set! take that ball and run.
Posted: Oct 15, 2003 8:54 am
I know there is a party the night before Halloween and I am sure there are tons of things going on Halloween night...somebody figure it out. I gotta go on vacation. Lemme know.

there's a punk rock cover band show, as there always is.last year was misfits, alice cooper, siouxie and the banshees, black sabbath, and a handfull more at the mississippi bike shop. this year, far as i can tell, it's the wipers, nirvana, siouxie, possibly the misfits (thier 9th halloween!), and bo diddley. i think it's supposed to be at the jasmine tree downtown. don't know yet.

M,hon,you're making me blush!!!!!

DUDE! There's these 2 morbidly obese middle aged women (One Black and one White!!!) that ride Rascals around togther in my neighborhood! I've seen 'em roll the streets of Greenwood chain smokin' More cigarettes and generally terrorizin' the populace like a really slow movin' Banditos or something!Wish i had photographic proof, but like Bigfoot n' Nessie, they remain elusive...

Posted: Oct 15, 2003 10:46 pm
shit, and all i have in my neighborhood is a double amputee that wheels around in his chair with his shit-zu in tow that always wants to fight my dog. oh, and the inept blind guy that literally swings his cane at groin level while bucking his way onto the bus. personally i think he's not really blind, but just can't be bothered to open his eyes anymore. it's funnier that way.

Yeah, i wonder if they lead interesting enuff lives to warrant a sitcom... maybe if one of the Rascals talked and was a reincarnation of one of their mothers and would offer them advice for their problems, that would be cool!

Hey c.d.,what parta Chicago do ya live in?

'west' ukranian village, i.e.: humbolt park. close to the black beetle/empty bottle

and the bar at end of my block opens at 8am..the rummy bartender is usually out there at 7:30 waiting to be let in. i have idea why he doesn't have a key.

Dead Moon at Satyricon last Halloween was awesomely depressing. Maybe Satyricon is just depressing. That coverband show was shite!!!!!!! But I can bet I know who will be in the Nirvana cover band.

Creepy Drifter--Does that one totally hot waitress still work at the Black Beetle, you know, the one with black hair, stylishly mulleted, with the striped teeshirt. Lots of eye makeup?

joe danger
Posted: Oct 20, 2003 3:16 am
last year's cover band show was shite??? wow, man, that was one of the funnest shows i've been to in years. it was like a real 80's punk show- people doing stage dives off the p.a., crazy wild energy, beer cans flying through the air...course if you went to satyricon that means you probably left before it really got going.
Posted: Oct 20, 2003 6:39 pm
true 'nuff
Even my fucking roommates wouldn't give me any of their beer so I had to get out of there fast.

Don't get me started on The CON....fuck it, i already started!Words can't describe how depressing this place is,all the pretentiousness of a Rock Club (esp. after mid-90s Emo's ripoff makeover) and all the hopelessness of the streeets that surrounded the place (they didn't call it Syringeicon for nothing!)To be fair, ther were times that it was tolerable, and i even rememeber having a sensation that almost felt like fun,but most of the time i felt like i was gettin' drunk in order to have fun,as opposed to having fun and then gettin' loaded...

After the way they treated touring bands as pieces of meat that don't need to be paid,i was kinda glad to see it go, but i still feel that it needed a little more than to be turned into the Icon fucking Techno Disco, but i digress...

For all the beer drank in the world,a Cover Band show will never be as fun as a real show...otherwise,what;s the point? You might as well stay home and listen to the records ( or Top 40 radio)...

Posted: Oct 20, 2003 7:46 pm
The Satyricon closed down? Awesome.
Posted: Oct 20, 2003 8:46 pm
They should close down the ash street station or whatever it is too.
Posted: Oct 20, 2003 9:34 pm
i think i know the one you're talking about. she was the last time i was there.
Posted: Oct 20, 2003 9:45 pm
Besides a bi-polar soundwoman with no health insurance to get medication they pay the touring bands 10.00 and 11.00 depending on who "headlines".
Posted: Oct 20, 2003 9:59 pm
i played the satyricon twice. sucked both times. what got me was the fact that like all the other clubs in that area had to sell food, BUT it was so expensive for a po' ass touring band to eat there, and as i recall there was no 'band menu'. EJ's was a totally different story. they even let us come back the day after we played to buy some cheap grub before we left town. what happened to that place? is it a strip club again?
Human Garbage Disposal
Posted: Oct 21, 2003 1:50 am
Drifta,i am sad to report that EJs is shut down and is a pawn shop now. Ironically, the owner of the pawn shop was a relative of the apt. building owner next to EJs that used to phone in exaggerated noise complaints to the fuzz which got 'em shut down,hmmmm....

EJs was WAAAAYYY more fun than the Con,but there was still a fucked up Clique mentality that ran the place... If you were a non-local "local" that moved into town in the 90s,the most fun you could have was gettin' drunk with Holly, otherwise it was drowning in a sea of Leather pants and pretense!

I hate to be such a shit talkin' man,but that's my take on PDX back in those days, and i'm sure i'm not exaggerating that much!I'm glad things have gotten so much better...

Speaking of depressing:
I'm talkin' about the Saloon, not the Moon! You know they won't get paid $10...

oh god, so much to agree with- i agree that satyricon was a junkie shithole and i agree that ej's was a leather jacket pabst scenster hell, but at least they were there. now what do we have? berbatis, ash street- BULL-TO-THE-SHIZNIT!!! every ounce of grit has been sold out or cleaned up, and there's little shows all over town in hole in the wall bars but no real scene to call one's own or place to make it exsist. or... maybe i'm just not in it. that, too, is a possiblity.
Posted: Oct 21, 2003 6:07 pm
Didn't Jay Reatard get kicked out of EJs?
Did the Satyricon really close down? Where will all the Rod Stewart punx go?
Ash St. saloon is fun because it completely sucks ass and the rednecks who come into the city from Gresham tend to get really violent at Dead Moon shows. The Black Bird also closed, thankfully. Portland is cool if you are a vegan who loves bikes.

Creepy- I was joking about the hipster waitress stereotype but I wouldn't be surprised if you did see her the other night.

Posted: Oct 21, 2003 7:00 pm
that was an astute assumption of a stereotype because there IS this vaguely goth looking bartender there that matches that description. i was assuming it was her. the beetle isn't much of a hipster bar though. lots of "cubs-fan" type douchebags hang out there and hispanic "pool sharks" who've seen "color of money" way too many times, and new yuppie mommies and daddies who bring their new born to a bar(i'm sorry, 'bistro') and shoot you dirty looks for smoking around little baby jesus...outside even.

I NEVER considered myself part of the Con/EJs OR the vegan "biker" (heh heh) scenes! That shit was all way too pretentious for me and the other,oh,about 18 or so people that i got along with,so we fell ass backward into a Shit Rock Nation of fellow drunks, defects, and failures in PDX and in TacOly and 'Attle! Just because we played their venues on Tuesday nites (and eventually packed the room and sold 'em outta the bar in beer and NEVER got paid!)
didn't mean we associated with those clods on any sort of regular basis!

Rock Clubs only serve 2 functions: a place to play that's not a basement, and an excuse to get drunk (or laid) outside of a house party! Since i can have more fun NOT at Club 21,i didn't go there unless it was to promote the band!

If i had my way,i would DESTROY ALL ROCK CLUBS,that way people would have to be creative again about where to play and who to play with! There's not enuff band input in a Rock Club when it comes to booking shows either. How many times has one tried to book a great show w/ bands that wanna all play together only to have it subverted by whoever was booking that wanted some retarded ass band to play that didn't fit into the bill at all because they say it might "draw"? That's Rock booking in Portland in a nutshell right there!

Or at least that's how it used to be! It seems like the new generation of clubs like Twilight Cafe,Dunes, etc. are little more user friendly than those old ones, probably because they're booked and ran by folks that used to be in bands that played on Tuesday nite that got the royal screwjob from those shitty clubs!I'm sure it's not all Peaches and Cream or Ambrosia w/ these new places either, but it's an imperfect world, and i'd much rather see a band play w/ the intensity of knowing each show could be their last 'cuz the place is shutting down than to go to some fucking Established venue where the intensity level of performance is lacking 'cuz it might as well be a wax museum in there, and no one's having fun!

I think everybody knows what i mean by Rock Clubs as opposed to dive bars, but just in case, i'm talkin' about places like Berbati's Pan,Crocodile Cafe,Metro...any place where the staff thinks they're hotter shit than the bands that have to play there unless you're some big ass Star...

THAT'S a Rock Club.
