Goner Message Board / Upcoming Shows For Goners Everywhere / SXSW 2010 Music Festival March 17th - 21st
Posted: Oct 12, 2009 1:35 pm

Last year was great, as usual

The SXSW Music Festival will be held March 17-21, 2010 in Austin, Texas
SXSW website: http://www.sxsw.com

If your band is interested in performing in a SXSW 'official' showcase, applications are now being accepted and the deadline is November 6, 2009.

Less Than One Month Left to Apply for a SXSW Music Showcase!

The early application cost is US $30 (through September 25, 2009). The cost increases to US $40 from September 26th until the final deadline.

Noteworthy info from SXSW FAQ:

8. I represent several bands and would like them all on the same showcase. Can I host an evening? What do I need to do?

First, submit separate applications for each act. Then, send an email to music@sxsw.com with this Subject line: Label Showcase Request for [Add The Name of Your Entity Here] Be sure to list your acts in the body of the email (along with any other pertinent details). We receive a huge volume of email. If you do not use the above subject line, we may miss your request.

17. If my act is accepted for SXSW 2010, can I schedule non-SXSW Austin shows around my SXSW performance?

If accepted for a SXSW Music showcase, artists agree to not perform at any other public shows in Austin between the dates of March 17-20, 2010 and to notify SXSW of any non-SXSW private parties scheduled. Non-SXSW appearances cannot occur during SXSW Festival hours (7 pm to 2 am nightly), cannot charge admission, or be advertised in any media available to the general public.

Artists acknowledge that a showcase slot at the SXSW Music Festival is a valuable commodity, and agree to limit their appearances at non-SXSW events to no more than one a day in order to not diminish attendance at the official showcase venue, and in order to maximize media, registrant, and public attention at their official SXSW showcase.

When will I find out if my band has been accepted for a showcase?

All acts will be notified on or before January 29th, 2010.

--------------------------------------

As ALWAYS: If you have even the slightest inkling to attend SXSW this year, reserve a room RIGHT NOW! And cancel it later if you don't need it. There are some CHEAP (get what you pay for) hotels ($55-ish) with kitchenettes around I-35 & Oltorf that would be great for the long week/weekend.

It's gonna be a WHILE before it's time to deal with any of the other usual SXSW hijinx, so send an email with band name in the subject line if interested; NO guarantees!

They still do this? I thought it would have been wiped out along with the rest of the music business by now. Go figure. I guess there are still some squares left.

Not this year, prices seemed to have gone up quite a bit. Staying at the Motel 6 next door, that was pretty decent last time and at $50-70p/n more the price I'm looking for. How about you?

DJ Pasta
New Orleans LA
http://www.defendneworleans.com/pasta

DJ Pasta is a New Orleans legend. The man owns more records than you, and me, and everyone we know. Most of those are out of print 45s that we've never even heard of, but the minute he sets the needle down, you may just be hearing a new favorite classic.

When you're in New Orleans, you can find Pasta at a variety of resident gigs at local spots. When the man is at work, you'll hear Swamp Pop, early R&B, Boogie Woogie, accidental Rock n Roll, lost and found Country gems, and on a rare occasion, 80's b-boy electro. He's an archivist. He preserves these songs that we want to know, and he delivers them to our ears as we dance the night away. He's a good times icon, and ambassador of our great city.

DJ Pasta plays other peoples music, so we haven't uploaded anything to the SXSW site. Don't let that deter you from discovering his craft. You can hear a taste and learn more at www.defendneworleans.com/pasta

So in 2007 when I went to SXSW (the one 'n only time I went), I had the pleasure of hearing Motorhead and X... from the other side of a wall. Pretty neat, but I'd sure like to get in to gigs like this this year. From what I understood, one had to RSVP (Vice?) and get on a list, and you got in free, badge or not. Did I understood that correctly? If so, what do I have to do to find out about these gigs? Read Vice? Ugh. There's some decent stuff in there, but there's just enough hipper- and smarter-than-thou, condescending, name-calling negativity in there to keep me away. What the fuck do I care about who some trust fund hipster kids with a knack for writing think is a douchebag? It's one of the reasons I spend my days in Europe... kids seem more concerned with being genuinely sweet than with being cooler than the next guy.

WHOA that was a tangent. I'm pulling an allnighter tonight. My brain's a bit fried. Anyway, many thanks to anyone who has any insight about SXSW ins.

Hey Pete -- you're coming then? That would be great!

Getting into shows depends on what shows you want to attend -- IF you don't have a badge or wristband.

I suggest looking at all the shows here: http://www.showlistaustin.com/

ALL shows listed above are non-SXSW 'official' showcases and most all are free -- or have RSVP lists. It's my opinion (only) these RSVP lists are probably what companies/promoters/whatevers are using to collect emails for promotions and/or used or to gauge interest in the event. I certainly don't know.

ANYWAYS -- go there to create your intenerary and check back often as it is updated daily.

Most the official showcases look horrible this year,

I thought red mass was playing this year
Posted: Mar 4, 2010 1:42 pm

Yeah, that one at Jaime's looks good, but sometimes it's more hassle than it's worth trying to get into the official shows.

Tuesday night gets things off to a good start for sure, I'm going to catch the start of the Scoot Inn show then head up to the 21st St Co-Op. Seeing Thee Oh Sees twice in one night must be done!

SX Preview: 2nd Annual Panache Pre-Party

Get a head start on your own week-long hangover by partying on Tuesday of this year's SXSW. Amongst the many parties crystallizing on this date, the Scoot Inn looks to be especially rowdy with two stages worth of bands.

Outside we'll have Turbo Fruits, Golden Triangle, The Strange Boys, Thee Oh Sees and The Coathangers . On the inside stage, So Cow, Signals, Z's, Videohippos, and Baths will perform. Panache is a company that does booking for a living, so they're no strangers to putting on strong shows. They also have official showcases on Friday and Saturday.

*All the bands at the Trouble In Mind day show on Friday - EVERY BAND was great!
*White Wires at Trailer Space on Thursday - rough & rowdy!
*Wounded Lion @ Beerland Sat. nite
*Night Beats @ Spider House on Sat. nite (Trouble In Mind single coming soon!)
*Golden Triangle @ Spider House on Thursday
*Thee Oh Sees @ Spider House - they played everything super fast & loose - plus the new tunes were great!

biggest letdown:
Happy Birthday... only (half-heartedly) played 4 songs...
Posted: Mar 26, 2010 12:21 am

I had to leave that Trailer Space show before White Wires, didn't get to see them at all except to shit-talk and drink one of their beers on the bridge. The band I left for was one of my faves though:

Gun Outfit @ Beerland. I was worried when the girl couldn't get her guitar to not feedback. Wrong. They killed.

Off! @ Beerland. Sounded like Black Flag, but when Keith Morris is singing that's ok.

Thee Oh Sees on the bridge. Made me forget how much I didn't want to be there.

Sector Zero @ Beerland. I know I'm supposed to be here for the other bands but this was a first-time thing. So fun.

Destruction Unit @ Beerland. Did you miss this? Shame on you.

Surfer Blood @ Beerland. Surprise appearance Sunday. Tighter than last time, when Shitty Beach Boys opened for them.

Spits killed every time I saw them, of course.

Wizzard Sleeve, Puffy Areolas, White Wires at Trailer Space
Spits @ Jaime's.
