I been hearin' some shit about this... Anyone know what the deal is? I can't find any info about it online. All I've heard so far is that The Mummies, Oblivians and The Sonics are supposedly playing this sometime in October...
Posted: Jul 2, 2009 1:05 am

It's about time someone threw a a "garage-punk festival" in this town, amiright???

I second these rumors. Searching around on Google yielded nothing about 1.5 weeks ago.
Posted: Jul 2, 2009 11:53 am

a little birdie told me that signing up on the Scion and Vice mailing lists wouldn't be a bad idea in terms of being informed of these rumored events...
Posted: Jul 2, 2009 11:58 am

we're playing & it's for real - October 16th & 17th - & if even HALF the bands play off of the list we saw, it's gonna be UH-MAZING.
Posted: Jul 2, 2009 12:23 pm

What timing. My current job ends in October. I guess there is a reason now for me to hurry up and find another gig before then.

Any venue info?
Posted: Jul 2, 2009 3:55 pm

I heard "multiple venues".
Posted: Jul 2, 2009 4:05 pm

so looks like i'll be making my first trip back to PDX in october.
Posted: Jul 2, 2009 4:18 pm

I heard "multiple venues".

I guess that is good, as long as it's not scheduled like ClusterFuckNW, where they seem to intentionally schedule bands of the same genera at different clubs at the very same time.

MFNW solved that problem for 2009 by booking exactly 0 bands that I care about.

moving here was a very good idea..

I'm personal friends w/ some of the performers at this show so i'm happy they're gettin' paid. I may hate Portland but i would never deny my friends that live there a chance to see a good show, even if the whole corporate sponsorship angle of this depresses the hell outta me on the inside.

Will email about dem Assholes soon!

Of course not, because bands that cool seem to never play Portland. :(

Garage Turkey is the new Electroclash. Sigh.

Actually, judging by what Vice and Scion did in Chicago last year, Garage Turkey is actually the new Black Metal.

I haven't seen a final list, but the Mummies, DMZ, Sonics, and a bunch of other already-mentioned band are enough for me to be pretty interested in this. I've got no problem having to walk past some stacks of Vice Magazine and having to look at a Scion banner for 3 days to see it all for free.

Biggest complaint I can muster is that it's going to be DMZ rather than the Lyres. DMZ's great, but I've seen them a couple times, and never seen the Lyres.

This event could be sponsored by Halliburton & Blackwater and I'd still go.

Yeah. Considering the number of PBR and Camel events we've all been to over the years, I don't think it's a big deal at all. Plus, I'm more of a Nissan Cube man myself anyway.

Not sure if this is it, how accurate it is or what, but just spotted this through facebook. Not sure if the link will work... http://i61.photobucket.com/albums/h71/dougiesupple/Picture1.png

That certainly has the look of a complete lineup, although if the Friday/Saturday is still a go, then I can also see this list spread over two days. Some great looking shit all the same.
Posted: Jul 30, 2009 1:14 pm

Looks awesome. I think its odd that they've decided against booking hardly any local bands, but we can go see locals any time so whatevs.
Posted: Jul 30, 2009 2:19 pm

Link doesn't work now! What did it say? Someone spill the beans!
Posted: Jul 30, 2009 2:56 pm

This link being broken is driving me nuts. Anyone save the image, and can repost it?
Posted: Jul 30, 2009 3:11 pm

Basically, about 40 bands in 4 separate venues simultaneously. So no way to see all of them. About half of the goner fest lineup was on the list.

No No No! Separate venues simultaneously is not what I ordered! That will now cause me to play King David and choose amongst bands.
Why must life be full of such tough choices?!?!
Posted: Jul 30, 2009 3:43 pm

Uggh. What venues?
Posted: Jul 30, 2009 3:44 pm

Basically; Dirtbombs, Dan Melchior, Jay Reatard, Jack-O, Roky Erikson, Black Lips, King Khan & BBQ, Intelligence, Jacuzzi Boys, Demons Claws, Box Elders, Almighty Defenders(?), Sonic Chicken Four, Yusuf Jerusalem, can't remember the rest but you get the gist....

It will be even tougher to play King David once you see the choices. The venues are all within walking distance of each other though.

Just Gino.

The venues are all within walking distance of each other though.

so should I assume something like... Berbati's, Dante's...Roseland? Bar shows?

Just wondering what the scale of this will be. Most of those acts are used to playing relatively small stages.
Posted: Jul 30, 2009 4:20 pm

dante's ad in the weekly lists the scion thing for 10/17. doesn't actually list any bands, though.
Posted: Jul 30, 2009 4:51 pm

This secrecy shit is annoying. You might as well call it a limited edition festival and allow only 300 pre-orders or something, in clear yellow.
Posted: Jul 30, 2009 5:09 pm

Deadly Snakes made it on to the list. Will rack my brain when more sober.
Posted: Jul 30, 2009 5:20 pm

Berbati's
Dante's
Satyricon
Someday

Link still works for me?

These bands are all playing SIMULTANEOUSLY? WTF? Talk about frustrating.
Posted: Jul 30, 2009 5:23 pm

not as good as originally advertised... maybe the bummers and benders are spoiling me.
Posted: Jul 30, 2009 5:45 pm

finnark, if the link still works for you can you copy the image and repost somewhere where the rest of us can drool at it?
Posted: Jul 30, 2009 8:07 pm

The image was deleted as far as i can tell....
Posted: Jul 30, 2009 8:39 pm

I searched around for other shit on the web posted by the photobucket username and it looked like he'd posted the image on the myspace comments of a few bands....guessing that's how it came to find us here. no luck tracking it down, though.
Posted: Jul 31, 2009 2:15 am

if any of you guys that have actually seen the image could dig it out of your browser cache, you'd make us nerds happy.

in other news, I signed up for the SCION email list a few weeks ago and finally got by first piece of marketing from 'em-- no mention of Garage Turkey Fest '09.
Posted: Jul 31, 2009 11:02 am

About half of the goner fest lineup was on the list.

I don't know why they just don't get it over with and announce the damn thing already.

Actually it sounds like you do.

Posted: Jul 31, 2009 11:51 am

Couldn't figure out how to paste the image so laboriously re-typed just for you...

Looks like Slabtown/Double J Tire Center has got something going that weekend as well.
Posted: Jul 31, 2009 1:03 pm

Noticed Digital Leather have a gig there that day as well...
Posted: Jul 31, 2009 1:26 pm

Surprisingly the scheduling doesn't piss me off. It look like the bands I want to see are spread out enough that I should be able to make them all. The only glitch being Davila 666 playing so close to Gino Washington, but I'll just make sure to catch Davila 666 at the East End and all will be good.

Now let's start talking about the next Bender.

Posted: Jul 31, 2009 2:37 pm

Looks like the same kind of deal as SXSW, potentially you can skip from venue to venue to see all the bands you want - if they're not at capacity, which for something like this is fairly likely. Could be great, could be frustrating.
Posted: Jul 31, 2009 2:50 pm

stoked on that Simply Saucer action...that format is retarded tho... reminiscent of the Vegas Shakedown .....I guess what's important is that Scion and Vice get their names out there to the buying public..

stoked on that Simply Saucer action...

sure, but a (less than) 45 minute set at 3 in the afternoon? - might as well be "unplugged"
Posted: Aug 3, 2009 4:02 pm

we'll see...sometimes less is more of that reunion shit...and 45 minutes is pushing my attention span these days anyway..
Posted: Aug 4, 2009 2:18 pm

Not so much a "reunion" - more a reactivation of the name - but I hear ya.
Posted: Aug 4, 2009 5:19 pm

yeah, now that some of the big names have vanished from the rumor mill, that Simply Saucer set might be the ones I care about most.
Posted: Aug 5, 2009 11:50 am

This is all seriously on the SAME DAY? Retarded ...
Posted: Aug 10, 2009 5:06 pm

Yay, we're (the test patterns) playin at 3 on saturday. Not like anyone in the U.S. cares bout us anyways. But hell, free airfare and hotel bro.

yes - happening for sure - I think they're announcing stuff this week sometime - sign up for the mailing list on either the Vice Records site or the Scion website...

cool. The dates don't work for me to make it for Gonerfest or Budget Rock, so this could be good.....
Posted: Aug 30, 2009 7:33 pm

anyone hear any gnus on this? i'm getting hitched two days after davila 666 is playing next week, and i don't think i'll be able to catch them, with family and friends flying in that day. bummer. hopefully they'll be in town in october for this thing, but their tour dates don't go that far on their myspace page...

I believe there will be an annoucement tomorrow.
Posted: Aug 31, 2009 11:56 am

anybody know who Gino's backing band is?
Posted: Aug 31, 2009 1:49 pm

As is the case in pretty much every city in the U.S.A., there aren't enough people in Portland with an interest in this kind of music to fill 4 venues simultaneously and given that it's not officially an actual event yet, the organizers can't be expecting a huge influx of out-of-towners. Anyway, I'm excited to see a good number of the bands and I certainly thank the organizers for getting them here, but I'm still a little curious about the philosophy behind this.
Posted: Aug 31, 2009 2:21 pm

IT'S FREE! I'd say that will get a few people out.
Posted: Aug 31, 2009 4:48 pm

I agree. The free factor will be a big boost to the turn out. Add to that the number of bands that are on the lineup who are hyped by pitchfork (the only taste source for most of the local music writers). I figure there will be more than a few sets that will see people turned away by the fire code.

the plan: claw my way up front for at least Simply Saucer, Jack O, and Deadly Snakes...then make like a baby and dick-punch my way the fug out of Chad-zone...straighten my dress and self-respect, and get on with life.

Don't know my way around Portland at all: how far away are the venues from one another? Line-ups aside, will it be easy enough to hotstep it from venue to venue?

Also, which record stores are in walking distance?

I will be there in my new Goner shirt, a white belt, and a Rod Stewart wig. And eating FIRE!!!

can anyone in Portland put me up Friday and Saturday night if I end up going to this?

All the venues are close to each other. A couple of rec stores downtown but not the greatest. 2nd Ave records and Jackpot are about it I think. The good stuff is eastside

99% sure I'm gonna be going down to Portland for this. Wish it was spread out over two days though, there'll be some tough decisions to be made, hopefully I will get to see Cheap Time. Have still never seen Roky live so I guess I'm going to have to miss King Khan and BBQ.

there's gonna be some good shows on Friday and Sunday that will make it worth coming for the whole weekend.

That's great! I'm glad you included the Museum of Contemporary Craft. People often overlook that gem!

still never seen Roky live

He played his birthday show with the Golden Boys and the Riverboat Gamblers recently at Antones. My low budget review is:

Roky was more out of it than he seemed at the Chaos in Tejas show. Then again I don't think he had to respond to any stimulus at that show so maybe he's just gone. At Chaos he had a band made up of old fuckers who seemed right at home reliving the glory days and not really trying to impress anyone. At Antones, I guess it was only the other guitarist, who looked like a mid-thirties goth. I was drunk, I had to pee, so I took off after like three songs. But I'll tell you this, he plays the hits. You won't be disappointed so long as you've still never seen Roky live.

Someone put me up for this! Put a roof over my head!

if they did, they've changed it now:

17:SCION AND VICE RECORDS GARAGE FEST
ROKY ERICKSON, BLACK LIPS, GINO WASHINGTON, DUCHESS & THE DUKE, THE SPITS, INTELLIGENCE, DAN MELCHIOR, KID CONGO, THE DIRTBOMBS; All Ages!

by the way, anyone hear that the mummies and the standells are playing the portland boat and rv show this year? just a rumor...?

I also heard that Greg Ginn is getting one of the non-Rollins line-ups of Black Flag to play the Cat Show at the Expo Center... or maybe that was just a glue hallucination.

From the Scion site: "Gino Washington regrets to inform that at the advice of his doctor he will not be able to perform at the Scion Garage Fest."

Looks like there isn't a replacement and according to their updated schedule, Black Lips now play at 10pm and Roky at 11pm.

Also, RSVP section says the event is now full.

As is the case in pretty much every city in the U.S.A., there aren't enough people in Portland with an interest in this kind of music to fill 4 venues simultaneously

Exactly what I've been thinking Sam.

Yeah, but, would you like them in a box? Would you like them with a fox? Would you? Could you? In a car?

anyone pick up tickets yet? do you really need to print out the email, or can I just show up w/ my ID?

what a complicated fuckaround of a ticketing system.
Posted: Oct 12, 2009 2:56 pm

(yes, I'm aware today is the last day I can pick them up...)
Posted: Oct 12, 2009 2:58 pm

I walked past a costume shop on Sandy. Hope they have my wig.

I went to MM this morning to get mine - they asked for the email, but accepted just my ID.
Posted: Oct 12, 2009 3:22 pm

I didn't give either at MM. In fact, the guy didn't seem like he really gave a rat's ass and I had to point out my name on the clip board.
Posted: Oct 12, 2009 3:37 pm

yeah, i didn't need a print out - just my ID, but the guy didn't really seem to know what was going on. Probably would be a good idea to print the email just in case, since it's down to the wire, though...

As is the case in pretty much every city in the U.S.A., there aren't enough people in Portland with an interest in this kind of music to fill 4 venues simultaneously

i'm sort of glad for that if it means i won't be turned away at the doors anywhere! that said, they let people register for tickets out of state, too - at least in washington. don't know if it was anywhere besides that, but there may be a lot of out of towners coming. plus, figure 40 bands - that's about 150 right there... either way, though, even if hardly anyone comes, the bands get paid all the same, right? can't see how vice or scion are going to make a dime off this, though (not that i give a shit).
Posted: Oct 12, 2009 4:26 pm

yeah, I guess I'll have to track down the email just to be safe.

as far as the crowds go-- Dantes seems packed every single time Jay or KK + BBQ play lately, so that's like... 400 people?

add the people that actually attend "garage rock" shows other than Jay / KK / BBQ and we've got a whopping 415 hungry fans!

As long as they don't have the good sense to go and see the Deadly Snakes, I'll be happy.

It appears that Garotas Suecas have canceled their US tour so they aren't playing either. The Dante's schedule now shows Strange Boys (7pm), Mojomatics (8pm) & Jay Reatard (9pm).

The lineup has been adjusted again. Jay Reatard has been removed from the schedule. So you can leave your rain gear at home, since you won't have to worry about him peeing on you.

Who all is going to this turkey? Besides being secretly sold out, I've heard zilch momentum about it and, coincidentally, am feeling rather blas myself. What can one do to shake off this ennui? Ah, darn. Whatever. Blah.

Start by going to Slabtown tonight........
Or just start tonight, period.

I can't do it. Not being there and it being awesome is fine with me compared to it being a huge annoying clusterfuck and me hating it all night. Still hope it sucks since I'm not going tho
Posted: Oct 16, 2009 9:21 pm

i intend to show up just cause it starts the usual time i get wasted on a saturday. but at the first, or third, sign of annoying clusterfuck syndrome i'm going to the yamhill and finishing off what the good lord intended.
Posted: Oct 17, 2009 3:31 pm

i'm going to watch sonic chicken 4 play a kickass set, marveling at all the elbow room i'll have since all the people too cool for garage turkey didn't show up. then, i'll do the same for davila 666, then the tearjerkers, then...
Posted: Oct 17, 2009 4:20 pm

yeah I'm sure there will be no one there. Just saw a dude I know who had just come back from getting his ticket downtown and he said people were already doing coke in the Honey Buckets at noon. The East End "celebrity DJ" thing last night was over capacity ten times over and spilling into the street from what I hear. Charlie Foxtrot fo sho
Posted: Oct 17, 2009 4:38 pm

i think people thought jay reatard was supposed to be playing at the east end, too. i'm optomistic that shows won't be too crowded as long as you avoid the black lips, KK & BBQ and dirtbombs shows...

coke in a honey bucket, though?! fuck! i don't even know how you'd get more than one people inside one of those. maybe the black lips were doing a secret set down in the hole...?
Posted: Oct 17, 2009 7:43 pm

I just slogged through downtown and it's a friggin zoo. Where did all of these pretty people with clear skin in bright new clothing come from? The are even smiling!
Posted: Oct 18, 2009 1:17 pm

yeah, berbati's sucked, for sure. they had a line down the block all day long, because they had a one-in-one-out policy - even when there was plenty of room inside. dante's was fine, though - same with satyricon. the only crazy packed set that i saw was davila 666, but they totally deserved it. sonic chicken 4 was fucking awesome - the tearjerkers rocked, too. kid congo was totally amazing, as well. didn't see his lux tribute at the end, though, because i tried to zoom over to see cococoma. heard it was really moving, though...

Gris Gris - Tremendous.

Deadly Snakes - Awesome. Friction! (blood in the water)
Posted: Oct 18, 2009 2:06 pm

I had a good time, much to my surprise. Had to make some tough decisions but actually ended up catching most of what I wanted to see thanks to Someday running behind.

That Berbati's policy was retarded! That's the only place we ended up avoiding entirely.

there were a *lot* of people in town for this thing.

that's funny! i was suprised at the lack of blatant advertising, though. i don't remember seeing any, really. some people had those little tote bags, but that was it.

I saw Roky. His backing band was way better than when the Explosives played with him a few years ago. Roky seemed more with it, even if he didn't talk between songs.

The only real stinker band I saw was The Dutchess & The Duke. They seemed really out of place in the line-up, and the 30+ minute break before they played didn't help.
Otherwise I think the whole thing went way better than I expected.
Posted: Oct 19, 2009 1:33 am

all in all, super fun weeekend, and waaaaaaaaaaay less of a clusterfuck than I had anticipated. As mentioned, the only bad lineup was at Berbatis before The Spits onward. Other than that, I managed to wander in and out of the other three venues without any bother.

Yay Cococoma. Yay Davilla 666. Yay Deadly Snakes reunion. Yay Mean Jeans!
